Flip or Flop: Life Unbound EP4 [S2]

by LUB
Sep 2013 - 563 views

As the season's flip from winter to spring, and then from summer to fall, we reminisce about our past season turns. While some turns might have fallen short, it is the memorable ones that stoke the flames of anticipation. We skied around Park City and scored some great conditions with dramatic clouds. We then took an ill fated trip down South to the beautiful Tushar mountains. Sickness and 60degree temps were too much to overcome and we struck out. As the leaves start to change, we think back to some of our more memorable turns and get fired up for the upcoming season.

December was a challenging month, from the Holidays to the weather, we saw it all. We had a thaw, we had rain, we had enormous storms and finally we had the crowds. In this time though, our mountains transformed from brown to white and finally into winter. The wind played a major role in this episode and was constantly tormenting us. When we had little snow it threatened to rip it all away, when we had a lot of snow it piled up cornices and slabbed up pristine slopes. It seems as if we are off to a solid start as 2013 rolls in.

Foosteps: Life Unbound EP1 [S2]

Two early season storms set the tempo for the early 12-13 season. We first got a 42" storm up North at Snowbasin and Powder Mountain followed by a lull that all but melted the snow pack. During the downtime we attended the Alta Athlete party kicking off the 75th year at the storied resort. We were treated to a historic slide show from the one and only Jimmy Collinson tying over a 100 years of the past with the present. The second storm dropped 52" on Little and Big Cottonwood canyon and it was game on. With rocks still peering out from all angles, it was enough to link up some very deep turns. As the weather warmed we turned to our own back yard, Park City, for a tour of the Monitors.

EP4: The Sorcerer

We headed up to the Sorcerer lodge (Golden, BC) with the TREW crew for one last shot at winter. We got to ski pillows, do some glacier travel and a whole lot of pow. It was an amazing trip with great people and the perfect way to end our first season of the Life Unbound. See ya next season!

EP3: Sleeping Dragon

Low tide conditions across the lower 48 meant we had to get creative and travel for some fun. After a trip up to Mt. Hoodoo we returned to Utah with frightening avy conditions. No better time to attempt to learn how to use our snowmobiles on the flat, open fields in our own back yard. We then had a surprise trip to Park City Powder Cats with the WidSix crew, while the snow was still low we had a blast. We finish the episode by going back to the Ranch with lead guide Bob to help discover some potentially new terrain.

EP 2: The Strike

With the snow nearly nonexistent in Utah we took matters into our own hands and rolled the dice. While Silverton had more snow we had no idea what we were actually going to be in for. With zero support except our sleds and each other we headed to 12,000ft and set up operations. We got lucky when a storm rolled in blanketing the mountains and leaving us unsure as to whether we would be able to make it out due to slides. Here is our story.
