If there?s anything that we can say for certain after spending the past three weeks reviewing this year?s Superunknown entries, its that the talent pool has never been deeper, and there?s more variation in style, influence, and inspiration than ever before.

Superunknown XII drew in nearly 100 entries from around the globe- some were all street, others all park. some all pow and big mountain, and others a mix of everything. Figuring out how to compare and judge one against the next was a huge challenge, and while we can?t say that we have the perfect formula, after spending countless hours consulting with athletes, media, and the Level 1 staff and rewetting most of these entries more times than we can count we have a list of 17 Semi-Finalits, and 9 Finalists that we stand behind.

We?ll be dropping Semi-Finalist all week long, starting with four today. On Friday afternoon we?ll kick off the fan poll for you all to choose the 10th spot in Finals, so watch closely, spread the word, and help us figure out who should join the other Finalists in April for a shot at taking home the title!

Dec 2019 - 1.9K views

We're proud to present the second annual installment of the Wells Lamont® team edit! One of the heaviest and most well rounded teams of any brand in snow sports now includes Tanner Rainville, Will Berman, Keegan Kilbride, Duncan Adams, Sean Jordan, Alex Hall, Chris Logan and Phil Casabon.

The 111-year-old brand has been producing the toughest work gloves in the business, and the transition into a winter sports line was natural- they’ve taken a century of design, manufacturing, technology and materials knowledge and translated it into the best and most affordable ski and snow gloves and mitts you’ll find anywhere.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again- it's NOT getting any easier to chose our Finalists, and the line between these entries and our Semi-Finalists is a thin one, to say the least. However, after weeks of reviewing them all, watching them dozens of times over and over, and polling a panel of our athletes, crew, and people throughout the ski industry whose opinions we respect the most, these 9 entrants rose to the top, based on their style, creativity, skill, and the long term potential that we feel they have.

SuperUnknown 20 - The Winners Edit

by Level1
May 2023 - 3.5K views

After a full week of spring-time shredding at the legendary Mammoth Unbound South Park, it was Mikkel Brusletto-Kaupang and Caoimhe Heavey who took home the #Level1SuperUnknown title, $2,500 cash, and a 23/24 @ikonpass.

16 Finalists and over 40 pros joined us this year for the twentieth anniversary event. Needless to say, this was the biggest and perhaps the best year yet. Mixing OG’s of the game with raw, up-and-coming talent provided a unique experience for everyone who attended. Huge shoutout to everybody who joined us at Mammoth, worked alongside our crew, or followed along remotely.

Given the abundance of footage we are drowning in, we have decided to release the FULL event recap this Fall so we can make sure we do it justice. More info on that coming soon 👀. We’ll still be rolling out plenty of content through Instagram and TikTok - so don’t miss it!

Thank you to Mammoth Mountain, the Unbound Team, Ikon Pass, Oskar Blues' Dale's Pale Ale, and Newschoolers for making it all possible.

If there’s anything that we can say for certain after spending the past few days reviewing this year’s SuperUnknown entries, its that the talent pool has never been deeper- we're stoked to see more variation in style, influence, and inspiration than ever before.

PSA: unfortunately, due to timeframe complications from Covid-19, we won’t be able to have a Wild-card vote for the Semi-Finalists like we normally do. We’re bummed about this but it is what it is. We will be launching a “Best Trick” poll soon that includes shots from the entire field - keep an eye out for that!

About Balance:
The video that started it all!
There existed an unrecognized balance between the level of skiing talent on the East Coast and the rest of the country, and for many years it was necessary for skiers to first make the pilgrimage out West before they were even given the opportunity to be discovered. Balance set out to change all that, as the first ever East Coast (based!) feature.

A lot has changed since we kicked off SuperUnknown back in 2003. Skiing has come a long way- style and technicality has changed, developed, and progressed so far beyond what we could have imagined and commonplace tricks of 2018 hadn’t even been thought of.
The landscape of competition, the internet, and video parts is barely recognizable compared to what it once was- but the one constant is that there’s always a crop of talented amateurs around the globe poised for a breakout, and they’re able to use SuperUnknown to take that next step!

About After Dark:

The earth turns and the sun disappears over the horizon. Flip the
switch, and the lights go out. Slumber begins and the mind awakes,
taking us to places we’ve never been and witnessing things not yet seen
or imagined.

From the enchanted powder forests of Japan, the historic streets of
Moscow, to the unthawed mountains of Western America, and everywhere in
between – Level 1 invites you into our spectrum of reality to see a
succession of images, visions, sounds, and sensations quite unlike those
of the conscious world.

Experience it for yourself – our dream, our vision of skiing. After Dark.

Aug 2019 - 3.4K views

Produced & Directed By Josh Berman

Edited By Josh Berman, Freedle Coty, Neil Satanopolis

About Long Story Short:
Telling a tale of six months of sun, snow, and rain, over a dozen of skiing’s most talented athletes, hundreds of thousands of miles traveled, tens of thousands of vertical feet hiked, hundreds of quarts of 2-stroke snowmobile oil, a dozen speeding tickets and at least as many missed connecting flights, this year’s Level 1 film is indeed a VERY long story, short.
Shot in high-definition across the frozen globe, from remote powder stashes of Hokkaido, Japan, to the bent metal and concrete of the East Coast of North America, and the fabled kicker zones of Austria, and everywhere in between. Level 1 furthers their innovative vision of skiing, continuing their tradition of captivating cinematography, inspired features and locations, and mindblowing skiing exploits in what will be THE story of the ’06 ski season.

Featuring:
Stefan Thomas, Liam Downey, Steele Spence, Corey Vanular, Travis Redd, Colby west, JD Zicat, Alex Balsen, Chris Biollo, Cedric Tremblay Fouriner, Loic Collomb Patton, Craig Coker, Flo Weisser, Tim Russell, Sean Decker, John Symms, JF Houle, Arnud Rougier, Matt Philippi, Dan Marion & Friends
