The Spy Optic Ace is a brand new goggle frame coming out for the 2015/2016 season and will be retailing at $110, making it cheaper than most quick-change goggles such as the Smith I/O.
First of all, having a goggle come with a spare lens is awesome, having an extra slot in the pouch that holds the goggles is even better. I wish more companies would do that. I'm always trying to find a safe place for my spare lenses, Spy has figured out a simple solution to that problem.
Secondly, Happy Lens technology is not just a slogan or a gimmick, these lenses actually make me happier when I'm looking through them. On a cloudy, snowy day they were plenty bright enough and clear enough to see through. Even in flat light they gave excellent depth perception and clarity making the chop and crud easy to spot. On bright days though is when these lenses really shine. They tint everything just right, if a cloud rolls through they seemingly adjust the brightness to help. The contrast in the lens really helps make colors pop as well.
Spy might have the best optic technology out right now with their Happy Lenses.
The frame of the Ace is different. It's more squared off than most, which can be a welcomed change in a world of round goggles. The almost frameless look to the lens is great, and offers really good field of view. All the foam is comfortable, and there aren't any pressure on the nose. Also, I haven't had any issues with fogging, even when shoveling with them on my forehead (something that can be a problem with most goggles for me). They're also plenty warm, I had no issues with cold under the lens even at high speeds.
Lens swapping in these goggles is a breeze. Just unhook and slide the two strap holders on the side, the lens pops out, then put it back together. No more guessing and trying to force the lens to fit into the frame. The lens is also an injected cylindrical lens, meaning it's formed out of a mold, making it stronger and clearer than traditional cylindrical lenses. The lens also holds it's shape out of the frame better than other lenses.
All in all, these are some great goggles. They hold up great at high speeds and under impact (I even tested the impact resistance by falling on my face, haha). But most importantly, the optics are amazing! If you're looking for a quick-change lens goggle with a frame that isn't the same as every other goggle out there, the Ace will not disappoint.
