Sänkyøu | An Arctic Adventure
This is the epic journey of 3 professional freestyle skiers who embark on a wild new adventure in the arctic circle. Sarah, Giulia and Mathilde are athletes on the Swiss Freeski team who compete on the world's highest stages in slopestyle and big air. These three long-time friends and colleagues have brought home countless medals from the Olympics, X Games and World Cups. Their experiences as skiers lie overwhelmingly within the terrain park, where they have made their name and established their reputation as the world’s very best.
In this short film, these three athletes explore a new facet of skiing in the uncharted territories of Svalbard, Norway, far from the metal bars they are used to grinding on. Twin tip skis were replaced with lighter off-piste touring skis. New touring boots and tech bindings completed the gear set. Backpacks were filled with avalanche gear, crampons and ropes as the girls ascended, and skied down couloirs that have potentially never been skied before - by anyone.
We document the joy and self-doubt, the growth and uncertainty, the frustration and ultimate relief as these exceptional athletes push themselves to conquer new aspects of their day job—skiing. We bring to light the universal truth that everybody has to start somewhere, even the most revered professional skiers.
This documentary delves into the lives of Sarah, Giulia and Mathilde to showcase more than just individual triumphs. It's a celebration of the deep bonds between competitors and the tight-knit community that thrives within the world of skiing. As the girls face and conquer new hurdles, their camaraderie and support for one another become a powerful testament to the unbreakable spirit of the skiing community.
Prepare to be inspired as we delve into their hearts and minds, uncovering their unique personalities, the laughter they share, and the humanity that unites them. Through their stories and the stunning backdrop of ski touring in Svalbard, our documentary invites you to connect with some of the finest skiers in the world on a deeply personal level.
