EfisherfLet me have it… I want to know your opinions.

I’m relatively new to skiing, really been into it for 2-3 years but that’s it. (I think that’s pretty new to a lot of you guys on here) I’m in my 20’s btw. So far I love it, it’s a total blast. And to be fair I live in the west, so it could even be a regional thing, BUT having some fresh eyes to the sport, there are a few things though that really get under my skin about the current ski industry/culture/climate that I’m curious if anyone else feels or can maybe shed some context on that I would’ve missed by being late to the game?

1: the elephant in the room… I have to agree that pizza before features in the park has got to go… (as soon as you have the ability to transition to carving of course.. obvi we don’t stan gate keeping)

2: what’s up with rail swaps and tons of spinning on and off rails?? Don’t get me wrong I know it’s insanely hard- but as far as style goes i feel like it looks so goofy. Hitting rails with more speed and flowier tricks and some fun jibbing looks so nice in comparison.


3: I’m confused about ski blades. Is it just like a meme or is this a real thing? If so, why?


4: another style thing… why skinny skis for park? I know swing weight etc etc but couldn’t you do essentially the same stuff but on a stompier fatter ski? Unless you’re racing I don’t really get the point of a ski under like 105(which is still on the skinny end)… imagine a sick street part with some 120 fatties… go watch @arkazakov on IG

5: Tall T - the company, not the clothing item. They put out sick products. but what in the world is their logo??


6: street parts: cut it out with the rails. A handrail here or there is beautiful but I feel like so much creativity is lost on tunnel vision for rail hunting. What about ledges? Gaps? Big drops? Idk literally anything creative

7: I feel like Andy Parry is worshipped by a lot of dudes… and don’t get me wrong he’s really talented… but so far I don’t understand the hype, Was there a video part I missed or something? (I’ve watched a lot of TC btw) maybe it’s the skinny skis and all the rail swaps talking…


I already know that this post is getting hate for sure and I know most of this is all up to personal opinion so why should I assume everyone agrees with what I find “stylish” but these are a few that really stand out to me and would love some good explanations as to why. I guess tell me to stfu if this was just way off tho..

animator1. The “pizza in the park” thing is just Mike Hornbeck being an old school dude. Looks dumb IMO because it looks like you can’t ski but who cares?

2. Fashion is circular as is style. Takes a lot of skill to spin on and off of rails. If you don’t like it, watch something else.

3. Don’t see how ski blades could be a meme if there are companies that manufacture them….

4. Narrower skis are significantly lighter, and generate less force when landing. Wide skis have more surface area, thus more energy is transferred through your boots and up your legs to your knees/back. Very basic science here, if you ski big air or slopestyle you don’t want to be landing with 2 105mm wide skis under your feet as it would destroy your knees.

5. Logos are made to represent a company and make you think of said company when you see it. Just like 2 big yellow arches make you think of McDonald’s….. marketing

6. Street skiing has come insanely far since skiers started urban. Some people like to ski handrails, others like big gaps, it’s their choice on how they want to express themselves. Hearing a 20 something year old say how it’s not creative is directly the opposite of what street skiing is about.

7. You contradicted yourself between this point and the last. Andy Parry has a big following because of his creativity. Hippie killers, 1-foot 50/50s, etc etc were seldom if at all done before he started bringing them to mainstream media.

We need more people on this website so I don’t want to tell you to fuck off but you’re way off base. Not because of your opinions, because absolutely everybody is entitled to their own, but because freestyle skiing is (at least it should be) about expressing oneself. Everyone has a unique style, a unique approach to skiing, a unique way of looking at a feature and deciding in their minds how they want to ski it. You passing judgement on these things is precisely the opposite of what skiing needs. If you don’t like it, watch something else.

EfisherfFair enough. I like to hear your perspective too. And I agree, I don’t want to take away from other people’s choices as far as style and gear and what they watch. Just wanted to air out some of my personal ideas (and I’m very aware I’m in the minority here… sorry I tried to make that clear). I assume not a lot of people agree with me so I figured I’d put my opinions out there bluntly and see what people’s honest responses are. Figured it could be a fun debate.

animatorIt’s not about being in the majority or the minority. Everyone has their opinion and that’s fine, but you don’t need to air it out and bash specific areas of skiing. Personally I don’t like to watch competitive skiing like the X Games or Dew Tour but I still have a lot of respect for the skiers who participate because that’s how they choose to express their skiing. I don’t like watching it, so I don’t watch it. I also don’t bring it up in a forum because I don’t feel the need to be validated about my opinion.

EfisherfAgain makes sense… and I also don’t watch video parts or comps or follow people that I don’t find inspiring… and while yes I wanted to poke a little fun at some of these things , I do legitimately to know 1) if it’s just me with these opinions or if they’re shared by others (call it validation) and 2) to ask some of you more experienced skiers why these things are popular that I just don’t understand

weastcoastAndy parry is the goat because no one has or does ski like him. Dudes in his 30s and he still rides just as hot as he did 5-10 years ago. Plus he’s done an unexplainable amount of things for the community and has definitely impacted so many lives for the better.


TC got me into park skiing, and park skiing is honestly what keeps me alive, spiritually, literally… it’s my source of happiness and the main motive to make me say, yeah, let’s make it through today. I’ve got more lines to ski, more tricks to try, more fun days with homies to have. Sounds a little morbid but that’s the truth and I’m sure there’s some homies out there that can relate.

weastcoastYou made some really valid points tbh. Just try not to get super set in your ways, I haven’t been in this game super long either but I know my taste always morphs slightly as time goes on. The more you ski the more you’ll understand/appreciate certain things I guess. For example I used to not fw Andy’s style too much. I still don’t. It’s not my favorite. But I love it because of how unique it is.

Efisherfhonest question, is some of it a regional thing? Like out here powder skiing is kinda the big thing, but I imagine east coast is more park, rails, swaps, you don’t need fat skis etc… so maybe that’s a lot of it?? Again literally no hate on the east. Dudes go hard asf. Just being new to skiing and only being exposed to western ski style I wonder if there’s a whole other half to skiing I’ve just never confronted or tried?

fredyferlI get that skinny skis and spinning a ton on rails can not be appealing for someone from out west. Personally I like spinning on rails, and with age I think it can be done in a more tasteful way, as opposed to when I was younger I wanted to do as many switch ups as possible. For the width of skis, I dont really see the point of skiing a super wide ski out east. I've skied Blends and Chronics last year and while I prefer the softness of the Blend, I feel like the Chronic is more optimal for doing switch ups and spins on rails, and is a solid ski with a good width.

For street parts it really comes down to personnal taste, both as a viewer and a skier. If you watch a bunch of street you'll realize that there isn't really one street skier better than the other, and some people hit certain types of spots cause that's what they prefer, or that's what's around them.

rojo.grandeIts not just that but the Tell a Friend Tour really did it. He's fed up with the unattainable, pretentious structure of USASA, and wants to get kids in a park to be in a park, not to dub. He's got a ton of respect from the industry because of the massive amount of time and effort he puts into the foundation of the sport, which at the end of the day is the shit head kids learning to or destroying rails.

The weight of your skis won't have any nonnegligible impact on the impulse your body absorbs on landing. Surface area also has no impact on the force on your body, except that a narrower ski might displace more snow which would absorb some of the energy. I bet this would be negligible in most cases as well tho

3maniaHenrik went from the Edollo ( his pro model @98mm underfoot) to a 86 underfoot ARV cause he said i put less pressure on his knees. There's a reason why most of the best park skiers in the world ski a sub 100 ski. I think its about more precision and swing weight. I think something around 95 works best, but I'm about skiing around the mountain, and not just the park, which tends be on the firm side for most of the year.

mattytruin terms of andy, yeah, you probably dont. i have never really focused on him or anything but he's just always been community oriented. probably what i appreciate most about him is that here and there ive seen him throw really stylish and difficult jump tricks: love that he can do stuff like that but doesn't seem to need to prove anything to anyone, just spreads stoke. chill person in an industry full of boners.

in other news i slightly agree with you about swaps and spins on rails. oftentimes looks like youre doing the most. its very fun to spin on and off rails though. hard to make look good, its part of the challenge. if you dont like it, then get really good and bring your own version of mature rail skiing to the table. with no hate intended at all my guess would be youre not a super experienced rail skier, itll make more sense once you level up

i dont really think there is an elephant in the room about pizzaing before rails. flow-oriented skiers have always kind of complained about others doing this. it seems you just saw hornbecks post, which is fine.

skis really only became fatter fairly recently - without understanding that context you might assume most people have always skied fat skis. this is not the case. i do prefer skiing wider skis in the park but there is a significant sacrifice in responsiveness and maneuverability. if you were pushing the technical boundaries of park skiing, you would not be skiing fat skis. and yeah the east coast is wildly different in terms of both conditions and terrain. youre skiing extremely tight stuff that most west coast skiers wouldnt consider skiable, and when its not deep its all ice. skiing fatties on ice is cancer.

its hard to draw a line between having tastes and opinions about skiing. obviously as something we all love so much, we have real strong tastes about how it should be done, and that's okay because it creates and adds to our shared culture.

I’ll be honest I think you’re making good points (for the most part) but I don’t know why you’re so stuck on the concept that I’m like trying to just stir the pot. If you read my original post I was clear that I knew it wouldn’t be a popular opinion but it was still my legitimate opinion and I honestly wondered if I wasn’t the only one thinking it? And if I was the only one, then I wanted to gain some understanding and context as to why those things are important to others. I’ve already said this, but if I could go back I would maybe say things a little less aggressively, but I in no way am just throwing things out there that I know will annoy people just to get attention… there have actually been some really helpful and honest responses that have already helped me understand better. Might be an approach worth trying in the future rather than assuming everyone is out to attack you.

animatoryup i did not say that how i meant to. narrower skis do however displace the energy right under the boot rather than on the side. personally i notice a lot that with wider skis its more jarring in the knees when landing because the impact travels up one or both sides of my leg, as opposed to directly underneath my boot

byuboundI doubt the pressure he's talking about is the impact from clean jump landings. A larger ski can put more pressure on your knees in hard carving and a heavier ski could increase forces on your knees in a crash, though.
