Sorry, embed fail. CR's Happy Dayz part was dope. Motionless floaty 3's into pow and that was the first time I had seen a Makio-style one-footer.

His segment in Seven Sunny Days hits really hard, especially nowadays. Him and tanner skiing together is just a joy to watch and that catskiing segment in EDIAS with Thall, Spriggs, and him is all-time. "Skiing powder, out here in the mountains with your friends. On the way down, its awesome!".

Focused is still my favorite segment of his. Watching it today gives me chills. The stuff he was doing in pow on 90 underfoot, full camber, foam core, pocket rockets is mindblowing. If he was still around he would be on Tanner and Candide's level. RIP to one of the GOATs.

I was actually going to post this. His Focused segment was nuts. In the extras Gaffney talks about how the snow they got in Norway was really terrible, so the skiing he was doing on those big lines is just insane. He was mixing tricks into lines very early on. I agree about Candide and Tanner too, he would have been on their level if he had not gotten hurt. He was arguably the best at mixing big mountain, park and pipe back then. This segment has footage of the 2003 xgames when Candide and CR fundamentally changed pipe skiing, doing 900's 18 feet up.

Back late May 2002 I was living in Tahoe. One of my housemates at the time knew Dean Conway, who was an early skier in TGR flicks who was guiding in AK that spring. Dean came back and was talking about guiding CR, Evan Raps and Tanner Hall around AK. He complimented all of them, but he really emphasized that CR's big mountain skiing just blew him away. All of the older Squaw guys used to talk about CR when he was in his late teens, they could not believe what a great big mountain skier he was by that age.

He was truly one of the greats. If he had never been hurt who knows what he would have accomplished.

Ahh good call. I completely agree with whoever said if he hadn't passed away he'd almost certainly be tanner/candide level


also, does anyone remember a GoPro video he made just ripping squaw, some time soon ish before his death? I vaguely remember a good one but I can't find it these days

This is another great segment.

I think because we so often see the greats of today ski lines and spin threes off cliffs in the middle of the line we sometimes become numb. Around 27 minutes of that video CR skis a really nice line and spins a 30+ foot 360, linking it all together nicely. CR was one of the first guys to really put 360s into lines, not just spin off backcountry booters. We see it so often today that we kind of forget what a big deal it was in 2005, and that it is a really big deal today.

I was looking for Immersion, from MSP. I watched it recently, a great flick which shows, CR, Shane, JT Robb Gaffney and Skogen skiing around Squaw and Tahoe. I highly recommend it if you want a ski flick with a slightly different feel.

Mad respect to 4FRNT for picking up CR Johnson after his injury. The guy literally had to completely learn how to ski again and they gave him a shot with his own pro model. Ive told this story here a few times but I ran into him at a 4FRNT booth at CU Boulder back in the day when I was a student there. He was literally the coolest guy I ever met and he took the time to talk for about 10 min about getting signed for 4FRNT and how stoked he was to be working on his CRJ ski. He was so down to earth it was hard to believe he was a legendary pro skier. Finally I had to go and it almost felt strange asking for an autograph after talking for a while but he signed this poster I still have today. Years later when I moved to Salt Lake I was able to pick up some CRJs on Craigslist. It was something of a sad moment when I first clicked into them because it was after his death and I was actually riding those same skis he was so excited to design years earlier. He was just one of those people who are so genuinely cool and stoked on life, even a short interaction just kind of stays with you. Ski in Peace CR, you are genuinely missed by many and deservedly so.
