I stand by my comment that deserting your unit with intent to seek out and join the enemy would constitute an act of treason.

well in that case we agree on that. my whole point is that those bemoaning the action of getting this guy back on the grounds of his alleged actions are scary in that they want to suspend the protocols of our military on a case by case basis, or when it isnt particularly pleasing to them

joining the enemy is treason. deserting is not. as far as im aware, neither matter at this step in the process as he is officially a US POW and therefore should be retrieved, end of discussion

as i said, after that apparently it is up to the army to decide whether or not he will be charged or tried for anything, so take it up with them, people whining in this thread. though i did read a reporter's quote from an anonymous gov official that "5 years is enough" referring to bergdahl's time spent captive with the taliban maybe being considered time served in a sense

guess we'll see. but for now, people moaning that he is being retrieved by obama are pretty demonstrably wrong and havent been able to make an argument that is compelling for why he should be left there

Obama probably didn't know much about this in the first place. The CIA coordinated the exchange, and the only reason the president was involved was to get the final approval. We can't point fingers just at Obama.

I'm not taking any sides of the argument until I know more, but I know that the writers from SOFREP.com (website written by ex-special ops guys) don't seem to fond of the exchange either.

My biggest problem with this is the message this sends to the Taliban. Capture 1 US soldier, get 5 guys back in return...seems like we might see more POWs in the future

Sorry E, but you are dead wrong here. This was 100% Obama. He ordered it. I have held back on commenting on this until more info came out. Republicans and Dems in congress are pissed. What he did was illegal and he has been planning it since at least 2011. The Whitehouse is saying that this opportunity just suddenly materialized, and that is why congress wasn't notified, but there is new info that proves that plans for this have been in the final stages since December. It doesn't matter whether Bergdahl was a deserter or Captain America, the way it was done is the problem.

Obama really wants to make good on his promise to close Gitmo. This was a political move to make that easier. He had to do it this way because there was no support for it. Nobody wanted to see these five guys set free.

Also, they will have to declassify documents regarding the 5 prisoners. It's starting to sound like these guys were high ranking Taliban leaders who worked directly with Bin Laden. Assuming that these guys are going to quietly retire now and not try to get revenge is pretty naive. These guys are rock stars now. I hope I'm wrong, but these guys will likely be involved in planning the next attack on the U.S.

It seems pretty clear that Bergdahl had some psychological issues, and is probably a deserter, but that's kind of irrelevant. It's only significant in the sense that people are pissed because they think it was a terrible trade; 5 high ranking Taliban for one guy who was probably trying to defect.

The US Army has conducted more than one investigation into this, and closed out those investigations. They have now undoubtably reopened or stared a new one.

I still think it's funny that the focus is on PFC Bergdal. If I had been his PL, I would have beat the shit out of his TL, his SL, and possibly my PSG, because shit rolls down hill and I know I would be a day or two away from getting fired. It's not exactly the 'officer way' but fuck it.

Apparently none of that happened and they just had to sign some NDAs while the whole AO was put on hold to find the guy.

I wouldnt exactly say he was "POW" that the military had to "No man left behind"...

considering he premeditatedly deserted the army, he wasn't a prisoner of war because of them.

If you were a doctor who had regularly scheduled appointments every single day and just one day decided to never show up again, should the hospital be responsible for you? No. You're no longer their employee.

Because he intentionally deserted the army, I wouldnt call him apart of the army. He wanted to dis-associate from them and they should have made that mutual. Not risk our national security (5 high ranked hodgies) over a guy who already caused US military deaths and created a national security threat by being fully fluent in their language and purposefully meeting with them.

Right now theres a marine locked up in a mexican prison for "accidentally driving across the boarder with his licensed firearms in the car" Now, he wasnt on duty, or actively serving, BUT he fully served 2 tours and is still in the reserves.

I think we would be more focused on at LEAST giving him a ton of american legal council (considering mexicos our "ally) because hes a true american warfighting hero. Not some fuckin shmuck who fully sympathized with his enemy (learned their language and sought out al queda after leaving his fellow american soldiers )
