To the guy that said he didn't understand the difference: "People" refers to humans in general, as in, not affected by a specific set of influences. It's a very very generic term. In the context of my post, "average American" refers to a specific subset of "people" affected by a specific environment. It is a much much more limited term than "people" as it encompasses the current American condition and culture.

i agree with you and i do not have little respect for divorce. i mentioned the kardashian thing for a reason. so many people in this country just think if they are not happy they can get out whenever they want. it all goes back to people not taking marriage seriously. if there is a problem then work through it but never forget the vows you made in front of a priest because like it or not your making a promise to god. my grandparents have been married for 58 years and my parents have been married for 26. both of them know how serious the sacrament is and it isnt something that should be rushed into or rushed out of. now im not saying that no marriage should end in divorce nor am i saying that gays will have a high rate of divorce im just saying i feel americans should take marriage seriously for the sacredness that it is. and if you dont feel it has a connection to god then fine you still have a duty to love and protect your spouse till the day you die. but aside this is getting off topic and has nothing to do with chikfila

LIsten you need to understand the very large difference between RELIGIOUS MARRIAGE and LEGAL MARRIAGE. 

We're not talking about gays coming into your church and getting married.  We're talking about LEGAL rights included in marriage like insurance and taxation.  You and your church have every right to ban gay marriage within it's walls, but you have no right to try to withhold equal rights to free Americans outside those walls based on what you personally believe for yourself. 

Now look at the other side.  If the Christian Fundamentalist movement had their way and stripped legal marriage rights from gays based on their religious views, wouldn't that be a Webster's definition of religious persecution? 

Let's check, just for fun, shall we? 

Definition of PERSECUTION
1 : the act or practice of persecuting especially those who differ in origin, religion, or social outlook
The answer is yes if you still don't understand, and that's kind of what the Constitution and Bill of Rights were about- You know, providing freedom from religious persecution and biblic law as they were experiencing in England??   I know the far right likes to talk about this country being founded on Christian ideal, but that is seriously a sad, sad visit to oppoite day that unfortunately the simple swallow without thinking about it.  It was formed as a big "fuck you" to England and it's forced religion, (research the King James version if you're curious) not to continue forced prayer, punnishment for "sinners", etc. 
So tear it up guys.  Have fun.  Get crazy with it.  Economics, all that shit hahaha...  But I honestly don't know how to put it any clearer or more black-and-white.  If somebody doesn't want to get it though, they won't.  That much we can be sure of.  I'm a Popeyes guy anyways.

Chick-fil-a is a BUSINESS.

People who are gay are PEOPLE.

For those defending Chick-fil-a, let me ask you... have you ever bad mouthed a company or restaurant before for poor business practices? That's how business work. They do well when they provide good business, they don't do well when they decide to fund groups to prevent a group of minorities with equal rights.

The fact that there's so many retarded kids in this thread that cannot tell the difference between a business and a disenfranchised group of people is fucking pathetic.

Supporting groups that are trying to pass laws that prevent a group of people from equality is not harassment at all... that's just like my belief, man. And you know the silly thing about beliefs, they should be applied to EVERYONE through laws. Corporations are people too :(

How does two men/women getting married affect YOU? How does the actions of two people who you don't know and will never know or interact with affect what YOU do or how YOU treat marriage?

Here's an easier one...

What's the difference between people using their religion in order to prevent gay couples from getting married and people using their religion to prevent interracial couples from getting married? Gay or interracial, its two people deciding to be together so what's the difference?

And yes there were MANY people who, at one point, were using their religion to advocate laws to prevent interracial marriages.

I'm personally a Pansexual (meaning gender doesnt matter to me when it comes to romance/attractiveness) I worked at chik-fil-a, volunteered for them, etc.

They knew who I was, and how I was. I also am not Christian, or religious on any level other than a developing interest in Buddhism.

Yet I never had a problem with them, nor did I ever feel pressured, hated, or bigoted against. All I see in this thread are a bunch of Straight White Liberals hating against Truett S Cathy for standing for what he believes.

If you want to hate against a company that donates more money, works more for the community, provides better service, with some of the greatest customer service because of a MEDIA INFLUENCED statement, than so be it.

I live in Georgia, the birthplace of chik-fil-a and they are all great. The people are extremely nice, and helpful.

Sure, maybe they are anti-gay. Are they any different than me being pro-gay? They arent suppressing me and my rights any more than any of you using the words faggot, fag, or referring to things being gay. In fact, I find that more offensive than anything. So please pull your heads out of your asses, and simply work harder on pro-gay rights/voting/protest than simply bashing a restaurant chain that actually does a lot of good.

Yes, divorce DOES weaken the moral structures.

Did anyone here say it doesnt? Do you goto church, and they say, Oh its fine to just get divorced? If so your at the wrong place.

The only time Ive seen my parents church be ok with divorce is when it came to one of the partners committing adultery, and cheating.

Yes.  I agree with your basic logic but you're overlooking a very important point that separates being anti-gay from a flat out attempt to revoke a very basic legal human right for others based on a superficial and non consequential criteria.     

They've gone past being anti-gay (which is simply an opinion they're 100% entitled to) to actually spending money in an attempt to remove the rights currently held by a minority group, effectively forcing their religious views on the whole of the populus.  Rights that are 100% rooted in our most famous right as Americans- the right to life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

How you guys are looking right past this I have no idea.  It's fine to think whatever you want, it's not ok to strip people of their legal rights as free Americans because their expression of love grosses you out.

The one common theme I've noticed among everyone that's defending Chick-fil-a is that they completely ignore this fact or they don't understand what a LAW does...

Corporations and a disenfranchised group are not the same thing.

Vocalizing your personal beliefs and trying to pass laws that inhibit equal rights are not the same thing.

unfortunately you need to understand that the principles and theories of economics work best on paper. i'm all for logic and rationality, but i'm also aware of the fact that actors tend to behave irrationally due to external circumstances. there is so much more to life that cannot be accommodated by economics like love, hate, fear, farts, jealousy, spirituality, and twinkies.

you cannot apply a blanket theory to a broad, dynamic, living, breathing and evolving organism such as the united states and expect a rational outcome 100% of the time.

i suggest you apply your extensive knowledge of the "dismal science" to the spiritually uplifting philosophy of humanism.

progress isn't a bad goal to aspire towards.

I was ASKING if you were trying to say laws arent based on belief.

anyway, i dont think a daughter an a father should be able to get married, thats my belief, i think the drinking age should be 18, thats a belief, i think gays should be able to get married, thats a belief, and Mr. christian doesnt think gays should be able to get married, thats also a belief. like half the fucking laws out there. there are certain things that societies dont like to tolerate, some things are considered taboo, where it may be completely acceptable to another country. something you are for may get you called an intolerant asshole in other countries. where here you may be labeled the same thing if you're against it. neither side is right or wrong necessarily, its just different cultures with different values and different opinions on right or wrong. and gay marriage is no different.

it weakens the signifigance/integrity/value of my future marriage. terrible example but lets say someday a man could marry his pillow. does that not destroy the credibility of your marriage? does it not make a mockery of the very significant event in our life that binds you with your partner? marriage is not something to take lightly. it is a very sacred (i dont care if your not religious) bond between two people

How is knowingly giving groups millions of dollars that knowingly try to pass legislation to prevent a certain group of people equal rights not harassment? The last time I checked personal beliefs are something that you personally believe in that DON'T affect the rights of anyone else...

Because they are supporting someone who shares the same BELIEFS. Who said beliefs dont effect the rights of anyone else? they dont BELIEVE that same sex marriage is a right. you and I BELIEVE that it is a right.

In other cultures where they allow people to get married at 12, they BELIEVE that thats acceptable, we dont. is our belief that 12 year olds shouldnt get married intolerant? are we taking away a right? is that harassment to support people who also believe 12 year olds shouldnt get married?

its a cultural difference that drives these beliefs in what is and isnt acceptable in our society.

The only people who can put a value and a significance on your marriage is you and your spouse. And how the fuck is two people of the same sex getting married anything like a guy marrying his pillow? And even if it happened, I would not give a flying fuck because my marriage is about the bond between me and the person I love, not anyone or anything else.

Haven't read the whole thread, but my stance on the matter is that both parties are in the wrong. Chick-fil-a discriminating against a group of people and firing someone for not participating in group prayer is ridiculous. You can have your beliefs but keep those things to yourself, don't force it upon other people like that. Menino on the other hand shouldn't be allowed to ban them from the city. Chick-fil-a should have the right to do business wherever they want. I may not agree with the way they do business but they should be allowed to open up a store anywhere in the U.S.

How is wanting to create a law that targets a certain group's rights based on a belief that not everyone shares not harassment? In response to the Beck video up there:

When he says something like "Why when you're for something do you automatically have to be against the other thing" after his cereal analogy he is ignoring the fact that a lot of things are mutually exclusive. His analogy about corn flakes and frosted flakes only applies when two things can coexist, as in frosted flakes and corn flakes can be sold at the same time. If we look at the situation in America and not just at this specific controversy about Chick-Fil-A it's pretty clear that he's trying to over-simplify the issue. We live in a democracy, and the majority rules. If I like corn flakes and they're sold along side frosted flakes, awesome. But, if Congress votes to ban corn flakes so that more frosted flakes can be sold we run into a big problem which is much more similar to what is going on in America. Ok so now we're going to put this in terms of marriage instead of cereal. Some gay dudes want to get married. Ok cool, right? Well I guess not, it's illegal in most places. The government is preventing it.

Why can't I be pro-equality without being against groups who want to prevent gay marriage? Simply because these groups are trying to prevent me from getting my damn corn flakes. It's not like same-sex couples are trying to makes traditional marriage illegal.

I've read this entire thread, and I don't particularly agree/disagree with anyone who's been posting. But I listened to that whole clip you posted, and I think Glen Beck is a little off. I'm very familiar with Beck because my dad practically gets off to the dude. In that clip he goes on and on and on about how Chick-fil-a is just a chicken store and they aren't/can't oppress anyone, so why the hell does anyone care... Well Mr. Beck is correct in a sense. He's right... Chick-fil-a is not directly oppressing anyone. However, Chick-fil-a is a huge company with a lot of expendable cash, and they choose to allocate that money towards groups that do oppress homosexuals.

I don't think the Mayor of Boston should have the right to tell Chick-fil-a they can't open a store in Boston. A letter from him to Chick-fil-a saying "as the mayor of Boston I do not support the presence of your company in my city" would have been more appropriate, but he should not be able to prevent them from opening a store there. I do not agree with the stance of the owners of Chick-fil-a, but I support their right to open a store wherever they choose.

Actually that's not how the real world works. You can't just start a shop up anywhere you want without the consent of the state and city. How about if you want to open up a franchise in a city where the residents and the city/state's government fully support equal rights, don't brag about giving money and supporting people who want gay marriage to be illegal. That's common business sense.

I'd love to see how many people would defend a store that openly gives money and support to the KKK but is not allowed to set up shop in Harlem...

As jibjunkie said above me, I guarantee if Chick-fil-a opened in Boston it would do well. I lived in Connecticut for 4 years, and have visited Boston many times. People would be upset about it and everything, but bottom line- there would certainly be enough people that wouldn't give a shit and get some chicken. That's the way political activism works.

Like I said, I personally don't support Chick-fil-a. I currently live in Pennsylvania and there is one near me. I will not go eat there because I don't support their actions.

That being said, OBVIOUSLY I do not support the KKK, but it is not an illegal organization. It's not illegal to be a part of the KKK, and it's not illegal to give them money. If a store wanted to donate money to the KKK that's their preference, and I think they should also be allowed to open a store wherever they choose. I understand shops have to go through the consent of the city, I just personally don't agree with that. I'm sure there are laws/regulations that you don't agree with. I would certainly hope that if such a store did open in Harlem people would not buy their product and the store would go out of business. This is how I feel about Chick-fil-a. I hope that people will care enough to support gay rights that they will not support the corporation and we will see it go out of business. But for the government to tell a company that they cannot open a store in a certain location because they donate money to a completely legal organization (whether that organization's morals are fair or not) is not fair in my opinion. If Chick-fil-a were donating money to the Mafia- an illegal organization, then sure they shouldn't be able to exist as a business. But organizations that support a "traditional family" are not illegal. If Chick-fil-a wants to give them money that is their decision. It's up to us, the consumers, to not give them our business.

I should clarify, I don't think shops should not be allowed to open in a city because of donations to legal organizations. There are reasons other than donations that I think the government has a right to step in, such as environmental concerns.

i am nowhere close to alone when it comes to this matter. trust me it scares me how fast some states are folding over to this but there is hope and there still are plenty of people who agree with me and chikfila. in case your curious, 93% of the world still legally does not allow gay marriage lol. it is growing but not a smooth transition in the least, just look at north carolina. this struggle will likely continue for many years to come and there will not be an eventual unanimous agreement that all people should be able to marry, sorry not sorry

Get mad about Kim Kardashian getting paid millions of dollars to get married to some jock for 2 months in front of millions of people. But you don't hear that shit on the evening talk shows, because she wasn't marrying a girl.

There is no such bullshit as sanctity of marriage. There are just two consenting adults loving each other, and government offering equal rights to all people under that category.
