Hai Guiz! What Camera?

Alright so I have a gopro now and am trying to expand my filming capabilities with the purchase of a new camera.

Budget - 1500 dollars

Experience - Fairly experienced with photo cameras but just point and shoot other friends video cameras.

Gear - I have four old prime camera lenses (will not help much with a video camera)

I am planning on shooting mostly skiing and short films.

I am planning on filming skiing mostly from a tripod and some follow cams.

Right now I edit with vegas pro 9 and am probably at about a 6 with it.

I would consider a DSLR but if I wanted to let my friends film me I am worried that they might not be able to.

Hopefully this is enough information, I just followed 1337s thread.

Well I'm in the same boat as you regarding price range. Some good video cameras  I've seen/ heard about are Hv20/30/40, Canon Hf series, used DVX's (preferably 100b), Panasonic Tm700 all for <$1500 . In the $1500-3000 you could look at hmc40/usedhmc150, probably used Xh-A1, used HVX or you could look into some of cheaper sony models......just few off the top of my head.

i have a hv40 and i love it it has manual focus so you can get creative with that and it is also pretty easy to use look at my videos to see how it turns out.

Learn to fucking search. There is a search function in the upper right of the site. And on most browsers there is a google search right above that!

put your primes to use
buy with a kit lens, spend extra $$$ on filters

put it on auto mode for your friends to film very easily
keep mounted to a tripod for follow cams

searchbar...

I think you would do well with a dslr, but it sounds like you'd rather go the way of a conventional camera. I'd suggest saving a lil more cash, and for around 2 grand you can find an XHA1, HMC40, used HVX200 if you look well enough. Hell I found an HMC150 for 2k even but didn't have the money. Those cameras would probably treat you better for your needs than an hdslr.

yes but buying a glidecam isnt exactly in his price range if he's looking for a HD camcorder setup for 1500$

a tripod is the simplest way to stabilize a dslr. and by simplest, I mainly mean cheapest

Did it ever occur to you that maybe my needs are different? That maybe not everyone is the same. Sorry I am well aware of the search function and its capabilities but you really have to think outside the box and maybe not jump to conclusions.

Canon T2i. Having your friends film with it really isn't a problem at all especially if you have a tripod. Give them an angle set the camera up for them then have them press record/stop. Eventually they'll figure the camera outas well.

No, actually your needs (as you put it) are pretty much the same as quite a lot of people who have asked the same question(s) you are doing so right now.

Despite what mommy and your grade school teacher told you, you are not special, and there is such a thing as a dumb question (hint: you just asked it).

You are very much in the box.

Do you think you have the ability to read the threads people have allready made and draw some conclusions from those. As well as do a little google search and read about what features you will want. Then go try and find a camera that has what you want and fits in your price range Can you do that, or do you need to be spoon fed?

stupidity is not an excuse.

Not really. Buying a camera is a big investment, and when you are spending that money you want to spend it right. Asking for advice from people that have more experience than he might is a perfectly fine thing to do IMO.

ya, but lacking the ability or motivation to do some looking on your own is pretty week. Its not like this kids requirements were even very specific too him.

In about 5 minutes of searching I was able to find not only a list of features that he would want for filming skiing/snowboarding, but also a list of cameras people have had good experience with.

If he was to lazy to take that small amount of time, how is he going to have the patience to learn how to use a more complex camera system? Are we going to see another thread titled Hai Guiz, how does my camera work?

People need to learn to get off their asses and go get things done. The world does not exist to hand you information and services on a platter.

You make some good points. When I was looking for cameras, I did a ton of research too, but it's nice to see what other people are suggesting.

For example, one could research and see that a sony fx1 might be nice for them, have the features he wants, and be in the right price. Then when he asks the opinion of people here, he would find out its not a good camera at all and would have been a total waste of money. I don't mind just giving him list of a couple of cameras that are usually suggested and recommend certain ones over others, and he can go read up on each one after and make a decision then.

I wouldnt go that far. Ive seen some pretty nice stuff from an fx1, but I agree that there are much better cameras in the price range.

He didn't make any effort on his own part. It does not take a lot of brains to read the dozen or so other threads that are pretty close to this; or do a google search. He did non of that.

His thread is basically this: I am too lazy to o my own research, will you do it for me?

The kid could not cary a message to Garcia. I doubt you could either.

I cannot believe how upset you are getting over this kids thread. I agree that yes, additional research is a must and would have answered many of his questions. However, it is not like this one thread is taking up all the room in the Media/Arts forum...I believe '1337.' created that list of questions to allow a person to take the time and actually give us the right information to provide them with an educated answer. I do not see the problem with helping someone just because they apparently are not as 'wise' as you...I believe that is a main part of this forum...helping other people. Also, you say 'he was asking us to do his work for him', is it really that hard? I personally enjoy helping other people with camera questions because it is something that I enjoy talking about.

I love talking about them as well! Helping out my fellow ns'ers with their questions and making sure they get the most out of their investments is something I gladly do 24/7. We all learn through the process, and it makes everyone a better filmmaker. Most of these guys are the up-and-coming producers and filmers for the next wave in the newschool movement, they need to be encouraged rather than insulted and turned off.

to who said d90, if i had 1500 to drop that would be way down on the list
to who said hv40, if i has 1500 thats be pretty far down too

tripod 200-300 $ get a 701 head some descent legs
glidecam 1000/2000....200-400 bucks
(craigslist both Im near nyc and if youre lucky you will find a bunch

leave you with about 1000 for a cam

since t2i's are all the rage, that leave you will 100 bucks save up some more you can throw it down on some new glass

I think you should buy a gopro, and buy a tribod and a glide cam for it, and well your at it, buy the lcd back, also maybe buy 2 just because so you can have double angles, and maybe an extra waterproof housing. I guess thats it.
