ok. so i'm supposed to write an essay for english on why or why not catcher should be taught to high school sophmores (i am one). i have a few ideas, but i need more reasons. i can go either way on this.

i finished it a few weeks ago
write about how it shows the real life experiences that a teen has to go too that eventually will lead him to adulthood no matter how exaggerated or ridiculous holdens situations are

talk about how it shows like youth misled, and how that can either teach a lesson about how it can mess you up so dont be misled. the other side is that it could encourage kids to go wild. it shows you the worst of the worst

no it should not be taught.

why?

here:

it glamorizes failing at life, and not succeeding.

it teaches distrust in addition to failure.

it promotes smoking, drinking and unsafe intercourse.

the main idea of the book, that everything and everyone is phony, is far too cynical of a viewpoint to indoctrinate children with.

there, thats a 5 paragraph essay in the making.


i'll be honest, i thought it was a shitty book myself.

i didn't hate it, but i just felt unaccomplished when i finished it. It was as if nothing actually occurred. It's the equivalent of a long rant on a blog. Sure you read it, but it seems pretty pointless once you finish

it should be taught so all of you kids don't grow up to be ignorant douchebags. it is probably one of the five most important books ever written by an american author. also, by the time you're 16 years old i highly doubt that a book you read in high school will make you start smoking, drinking, or engaging in unprotected sex if american pop culture hasn't already. and when did cynicism become a bad thing?

Fact: Smoking pot does not actually kill brain cells, it takes about 120 joints in an hour just to kill one.
And Fahrenheit 411 was a much better book. I felt like i related to that book, its one of my faves

It's not really about which way you go. If you feel strongly one way or another than go for it. I like arguing either side of anything. Just make a good case for it and fuck up the other peoples arguments. If you write about why it should be taught, you need to look at the peoples reasoning for why it shouldn't be taught, and then tear their arguments to shreds.

Never thought the book was amazing or life changing. But it's still a cool boo. didn't mean anything awesome to me really but certain parts had a cool perspective.
