I know there have been a few threads on this in the past, but I figured a new one was in order.
It's starting to warm up, and in a few weeks i'm going to be home on the Maine Coast and getting ready for some fly fishing for Striped Bass and Bluefish. I also love to hit up rivers and streams and lakes for trout and bass, but not as much.
I want to know who on NS goes fly fishing.
Tell me what you fish for, and where you fish, you can even post what kind of gear you use.

i live in NY but i have a camp in MT. i fly fish almost every day in the summer. tieing flys is fun
I love the Montana kids coming out of the woodworks to post in this thread. I lived in Missoula and learned to fly fish there. I miss it so much!
My mom and I took a trip and fished all the way up from Santa Cruz, CA > McCloud/Shasta, CA > Bend, OR > random river in WA > All over MT > Fernie, BC > Missoula > Ketchum, ID. So mcuh fun. Fished every day all day.
The USPS lost ALL of my fly fishing gear when I was shipping it home from my NOLS course. I have my rod and reel left... that's it. SO bummed.
I love fishing from a kayak. On slow days, it is really relaxing, but when the fish are biting, it's a ton of fun. My kayak is a recreactional touring kayak, so the bigger fish can really affect the way the boat handles. I have some that felt like they could pull it right over.
My dads kayak is a wider and longer sit on top kayak that I can stand on and cast. That thing is a perfect fishing tool.
Im hoping to get one like it in the near future to bring down to florida and see if I can land some big game species and shark on it.
I tend to have better luck from the kayak because it gives me more spots to fish. The harbor I fish out of has a bunch of places to go, and I can go off shore if I feel like making the effort.
There are a lot of hardcore fisherman using kayaks to get to the fish nowadays, and theres tons of info out there.
I'm hoping to start up a charter/guiding business someday, and I think kayaks are going to be a huge part of that.
If you get a chance in key west FISH THE FLATS!!!!! Its some of the best and most challenging fishing around, and it can be a blast.

and for ocean kayaking, I probably wouldn't do bait fishing much. That's more often in deeper water and rarely with a fly rod. They are surprisingly fun and stable, especially the sit-on-top variety for fishing for schools of breaking fish. Bass, blues, albies, bonita, even baby bluefin are amazing because the setup is so light and quiet it doesn't scare the fish down.

i know what you mean. my dad ties flies and so i got into it a while back and it was awesome! some much satisfaction in catching a fish on a fly you made
but i mostly spin cast although i do fly fish sometimes ive never fully gotten into it. nonetheless i love it and cant wait for summer!!!!!
