i read the article and i can say that your reading comprehension is terrible.

a problem with the functionality of the system does not equal = system breaking.  it means the systems functionality to connect to the network to save your progress and ranking is not functional.  not your hard drive blowing up.  you honestly think a ps3 that is not connected to the network is somehow susceptible to this issue?  no, because the system is isolated, therefore its not a problem with the systems hardware functionality.

that being said,

the xbox rrod problem could happen on any system even if it was isolated from the network (not connected) because it was a functionality issue of the internal HARDWARE.

thats the difference.
