Sanding sponges are usually found in the paint section of hardware stores, Lowes, Home Depot, Etc.

When holding true bar / straight edge on the base of your ski, move it up and down the length of the ski and check in multiple spots. The ski might be flat in one place and railed somewhere else.

Wow! Thanks. That's awesome and glad I could help.

One more thing to add is please support your small independent ski shops. They are kind of a dying breed and the techs usually know tons more than the guys working in the larger sporting goods stores. The 1 degree bevel on the base and 1 degree on the side is a great acid test for a shop. If you say that to a tech at a shop and he looks at you like you just said something in Arabic, go somewhere else. It's worth the gas to find a shop where the techs know their shit.

After cracking an edge on my Domains after using them twice! i found this really helpfull, thanks man, k2 hooked me up with a new pair at trade price, i got a sanding spunge today for £1.09 & did what you said, hope this time they hold up!

Very helpful thread, but why spend 30 minutes with a sanding block on your edge, versus doing 1 pass with a file until it's where you want it. it saves time and effort. as long as you don't go crazy with a file, taking it slow, is a hellll of a lot easier.

Those are probable railed, but it could also be that just the center of the base is worn down. Someone PM'd me about racing skis supposedly being railed intentionally. I asked some shop guys that I knew and they thought that it might be this type of tune:

This is different than a truly railed ski. On a true railed ski, the concave would extend all the way out to the edge. Charlie's pic doesn't have light bleeding through all the way to the edge so it may not be truly railed. Ptex is softer than metal so this will naturally happen to skis over time. If you throw a true bar on your ski and it looks like the picture that Charlie posted, I would say that it is worth the time to get them tuned. Again, find a shop with a precision stone grinder and guys who know how to use it without doing irreparable damage to skis. Ask them to put a 1 and 1 on your skis and ask them to detune a little and wax them. If they look at you like you are speaking a foreign language; take your skis somewhere else.

Thats actually a really good idea haha thx for the vid. i have one question though, will this method with the drywall sander work for detuning under foot to prevent edge cracks? because my old skis got a lot of edge cracks, i didnt detune them, and im buying a new pair for next year and want as little edge crackage and stuff as possible. btw i ski mostly big-ish kickers and stuff and some rails usually just if theyre in the same line as kickers i like, so do you think it would affect how the skis ride on kickers and hardpack very much? (i live in the midwest) thanks man

My skis are railed. Unfortunately last time I took them in the tech was reluctant to grind th because the base was do thin, he thought it would go through. I don't think I can do it again.
