Newschool wiki

So there's an idea about creating a wiki attached to Newschoolers that would have articles, written by us, about everything Newschoolers related (such as articles on skiers, tricks, hills, equipment, etc)

In that way anyone who wants to know "what trick is this" or "where was Andy Parry born" or even "what colour were the 04/05 Troublemakers" could just look it up in the wiki.

Obviously it would take a little while for it to get established, but with as many people trying to kill time as there are on Newschoolers, it wouldn't take long.  And to keep it grade A content relevant to what it would be about there would be moderators to keep articles within certain guidelines.


What is you're opinion/feedback on this idea?

well it would be like a normal wiki where all content posted is read through by mods.

plus an idea that would forgo that problem would be to have it so only NS members who are logged in can edit the material and this way if something very inappropriate was written we would know exactly who wrote it and consequences could be laid if it's bad enough. but just having it like that would probably already take out 95% of immature bs

it seems like a good idea, but i think having mods edit it would add a lot more to their workload. Perhaps we could have some brand of sub-mod who only edited the wiki?

i like the idea, wikis are great for organizing information. imagine an article about "what camera should i buy" or "whats a good cheap hd camcorder". would be nice.

I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately and i think the NS community could handle it if we set it up properly. I would suggest assigning a bunch of wiki-specific mods who would be responsible for going through the suggested additions/edits and screening them for accuracy, etc.

I'd like to see it happen...i think it would be dope

The software that runs wikipedia, MediaWiki, is free and easy to setup. For administrators, I've found the toughest part of wiki setup and administration is the level of customizability. The initial setup is simple, but thousands of combinations exist to make the software work exactly how one wants it to.

For users, learning proper wiki markup can be a bit tricky. Text articles are simple. Just type. However, we'd want a real wiki, with links that explain other topics, so users can read more in depth on subjects they may not understand.

Disregard the maturity level of NS users. Everything that gets published and posted goes through an over site committee.

I think it would be really sweet if it got going.

yea I've done quite a number of wiki articles and found the learning curve fairly easy to understand the principles of making a real article. I don't think that would be too much of a problem for most.
and if an article is poorly put together, that's why it's able to get edited by others to make it better.

i feel like it probs would work better for the admins to create a wiki from scratch than having to dig through mediawiki code to impliment it correctly. should be pretty simple, i would do one database table with each revision of each article and the user who edited it, the site displays the most recent revision of each page.

yep, or delegate down moderating capabilities, like a number of other sites do, to trusted members. So you know that content is adequately screened, but it doesn't add to the workload of the site mods.

make it so people with a certain amount of karma or posts or donater status are the only ones who can edit it. it would make it more controllable
