Here's a question..

You'd think that since it's a repost people would want it just to sink to the bottom of the page and go away, but instead you get 50 people posting "repost" and it just keeps getting bumped to the top and making legit threads fall onto the second page.

It pisses me off when kids call searchbar, but they will go to search and nothing comes up.  If you call searchbar, you should be providing some sort of evidence it is a repost, otherwise you are a total douche in my eyes. 

What is also annoying is when people don't even bother to read the entirety of the first post in the thread. This thread, for example, was not intended to be another thread about people claiming searchbar, but about people's complete ineptitude on here when it comes to posting shit in the right forum. Why is it so hard to find gear talk and media&arts? They're right there on the quick links. And given that it's NOT hard at all, why are people so offended that someone didn't take the time to use the searchbar, yet not at all offended that someone failed to post in the right place, which would have taken even less effort?

In other words, if you guys are so intent on calling "SEARCH BAR NOOB!!1" then I insist for the sake of consistency that you also begin calling "GEAR TALK NOOB!1!"

I think what it comes down to is that bad organization is less annoying than repetition to most people. And the small number of threads in wrong forums doesn't really compare to the huge number of repost threads (at least to those of us who aren't constantly moving threads around).

Wow this is just a painfully ignorant reply. That or wilfully dishonest. I'm leaning toward the latter, you know better than this. Chug life 6 is a "film" about a skier and about the ski industry. This would be like saying all ski edits should go to media and arts, all discussion of ski movies should go to media & arts, etc. My problem is not that. My problem is "What's your favourite Notorious BIG song" not being there. Or "District 9 was awesome". Those are clearly about movies.

As for the On3p thing, that's a matter of an advertising agreement between on3p and NS.com, but we generally allow ski companies who are advertising partners to post a thread on a press release in SG. This again is not the problem. The problem is "what ski should I buy", "which is better, Chronics or Pontoons", "What bindings for my invaders", "where should I mount my kung fujas", and on and on and on, in SG. These clearly belong in gear talk.

So neither of your examples apply. And even if there was a point to be made that they DO qualify (there isn't), there will be some borderline cases where it's not 100% clear where something should go, and I don't really blame people for those. It's the ones that are OBVIOUSLY mis-posted that are annoying, yet no one gets any grief for those. Meanwhile they get repeatedly dumped on for often questionable "re-posts". I find that hypocritical.

I think you can pretty safely tell someone they should've posted their "what bindings on my new live life 2s" thread in gear talk. That's not a tough call. Yet we get dozens of those per day. Most of the misposted stuff is just that obviously misposted, but no one really notices or cares. It's far less obvious that something posted under a different title 3 weeks ago was on the same topic as what you're posting now; our searchbar isn't even that good. But people take those threads as an insult to their parentage. So I don't think fear of being wrong has anything to do with it.

Well this is part of the problem. I hear people say "well I posted X in SG because more people would see it". In that case why do we even have separate forums? The whole point is that if people use the forums properly more people will look at gear talk to (surprise!) talk about gear. Or get information. Now, I can move threads, but peer moderation is much more effective, particularly on this site where mob rule is the order of the day. In fact, this might be the reason that misposted stuff is far more common on NS than are reposts. If you guys just attacked both with the same degree of vicious internet thuggery, it would lead to the forums getting more, and more valuable, traffic, rather than cluttering up other forums with threads that don't belong.

But really, that's a question of problems and solutions. This thread was just supposed to be about noobery being smashed to pieces in one context, but totally disregarded in another, which is silly.
