What Allen said is entirely not true. There are so many ways to refute that statement..

First, you have the ease in accessibility to skiing and media related to it, largely thanks to the internet. With this ease, it's not nearly as easy to "disappear into oblivion".

Second, trick names stalled? No progression outside of spinning? Well, how about Wesson and his ridiculous and innovative tricks that get crazier every year. How about double flip variations and the fact that they're being brought to the backcountry. Then imagine when those doubles can start being thrown with crazier grabs..

Third, have you even seen Hood this summer?! I swear it's about 50/50 with freeskiers and snowboarders. Maybe skiing is dying out in Minnesota, but it's by no means dying out here. Hell, more and more of my snowboard friends want to at least try skiing.

The only thing holding back skiing is the lack of a defined culture, which is starting to change (although more slowly than I'd like to see). The embrace of Jiberish is what marks the start in my mind. They transcended the typical ski clothing startup to become a juggernaut in the industry. Once more companies come up that have the right combination of drive and originality, our culture will grow and eventually step up to a more noticeable level.

actually even here in MN there are more skiers every year. on nights when the local team meets up its more of a freeskiing takeover of the park than anything else.

and allen is pushing rail skiing just as hard as will and andy.

from what ive seen at my school is that freeskiing is growing immensly in popularity. Im captain of my HS race team and at least 1 person on the team every year picks up freeskiing, theres kids now that are on the team to get the discount pass and miss school to "watch" the varsity races.

also following xgames i was approached by alot of ppl talking about big air and pipe and how much better it was than boarding...and that the dumont(dub super front) is the greatest trick ever invented...but thats another rant alltogether.

regardless of weather or not that is true, i think the think that will keep skiing afloat is the fact that, outside of park skiing, people still ski, and the base of skiers is huge. no matter what, park skiing will always get some recognition because it takes place right where all the other skiing is. Same goes with BC skiing.

Rollerblading doesn't have this base of people who rollerblade recreationally. While there certainly are people who do, they are so few, and so spread out, that it is almost not even a variable in this argument.

I can kinda see that because skiing,like rollerblading, isn't considered to be as cool as board sports like skateboarding and snowboarding to people

uh.... i donno where your from, but i dont see anybody ever on rollerblades. i could be wrong, but i was speaking from personal experiance. regardless, i think that my point still holds. there is no place like a ski mountain for rollerbladers, where agressive rollerbladers and recreational rollerbladers mix. that leaves the aggressive skaters all on their own in terms of recognition from others.

i admitted that i may be wrong, however, you haven't presented any statistics. and also, your whole argument is based on very little fact, and mostly assumptions, so i hesitate to agree with your point of view, just as you dont agree with mine (which is not based on any type of fact either).

not gonna lie allen, that doesn't mean shit.  the x games is all about showing the masses what they want to see.  its not only skiing and rollerblading they've done this to.  look back through the years.  skateboarding which is still an ENORMOUS sport used to have park and street competitions at the x games.  as far as i know they still have these competitons but they aren't televised and they recieve next to zero coverage.  the reason for this is that people don't give a fuck about technical tricks, they want to see bigger and better and more flips and more spins.  what it comes down to is would they rather see a backflip or a kickflip-back-crook?  think about it, 90% of the x games is big air style competitions.

i agree 100% that skiing is not going in the right direction trickwise.  some jump tricks are disgusting and rail tricks are boring.  this is where i can see similarities between skiing and rollerblading.  when i think about pipe rollerblading i cringe. 

you're probably right in saying that x games slopestyle isn't going to be present in later years.  that doesn't mean that pipe and big air aren't going to be. 

hopefully x games will be gone all together by 2012.

i dont really give a shit if skiing is popular or not. its fun as hell and its what im going to do.

the only problem that i have with skiing is that it can only progress to a certain level until we are hitting 200 foot jumps and people and breaking there backs and suing whoever they can. then our sport will probably die out like hot dogging

Allen, if you're still reading this thread then I have a question for you.

What prevented snowboarding from sustaining its mainstream popularity, and skateboarding? What made it so different that it succeeded where rollerblading/(possibly skiing) didn't?

Skiing is not going to die. It has a solid hundred something year history, so skiing has a good amount recognition. the only thing I could see killing skiing would be lack of snow.

Freestyle on the other is just a branch on the tree of skiing and that could die. But I don't really see that happening. For the last two years skiing half-pipe has been on during prime-time hours of the day in contrast to snowboarding pipe which is on between 2pm to 4pm. Also, half-pipe has almost been pushed to an even bigger stage, the Olympics.

i have to agree with allen, blading did keep getting crazier and less creative and i can see how skiing is following the same trend.  Iw ould almost like skiing to die off a bit cause then you'd only have the kids that really love the sport instead of a bunch of followers.
