a few of the rail tricks are cool, but majority of the "inovative" new tricks are just kinda stupid. like the one ski one way another the opposite. and that pretezel rodeo. it just looks like he shiftied it or stopped his rotation. you can really pretzel your rotation. i mean, you can get kinda lucky, like pep, but anything bigger than that of a spin isn't really possible

I still don't understand the hate for some of Charles' tricks. If he was in Traveling Circus doing them, would that make it different?

Ask Andy Parry who is hero is... he'll tell you it's Charles.

It's different, it's progressive, and Charles is one of the most down to earth skiers I've ever met. Keep killin' it Charles!

I don't understand the hate either, i love what he does, it amazes me - his creativity, antoine does as well.
 That trick is crazy, it took me ages to understand what he does. It's so sick now that i do.

I can't agree with you more.  He's sooo sick and really underrated IMO.  And YES he should be in Traveling Circus, make it happen Rogge! haha.

Mike, for me at least, it just comes down to what's aesthetically pleasing - not hate and/or a fear of what's new.

I'm not a Gagnier hater, and that one slopestyle run from a few years ago (I know that's an awful description, but the run has that "screamin seamen" grind thingy...Shea Flynn does them in/out of rails) absolutely blew me away. Gagnier has all the talent in the world (other than Andreas, he's probably the most competent 4 way spinner out there), and I certainly respect his creativity, but at the end of the day, I don't think the majority of his skiing is all that "pretty". It's difficult for me to articulate 'why' exactly, but I think it largely has to do with arm positioning, "squatting", length/girth of limbs (hahaha), and a bunch of other totally subjective criteria.

I'm a fan of progression and I love seeing people push the sport in different directions, as I believe the sport as a whole is healthier for it. That being said, not every idea is a good one, and not every good idea is well executed.

That was a pointless rant I suppose, but I guess I get a little irked when any/all criticism is essentially brushed off as "hate". It's good that people have preferences...that leads to specialization, which leads to progression.

that last trick was so weird, it looked like a switch 360 lincon loop... i cant come up with a better name but hes the most innovative skier in my opinion

yea its not really hate for me its just I dont like that direction that skiing is taking. like that vid straight up made him look like a rollerblader. Im sorry but I really dont like that direction some people are taking. as someone said above me, its not "aesthetically" pleasing to me. his air tricks are so dirty though my god some of those grabs make him look like a gumbo doll how much he bends.

Well, we're not the same person, so that makes sense. It wasn't meant to be an empirical, measurable argument. And as I stated, I thought this vid was ill. Yay for presses and one footers.

Have you seen Reasons? In my opinion, Charles looks really shaky and uncomfortable on handrails. Mostly, it's his hand positioning and the way he bends at the waist. Maybe it sounds stupid to critique something like "hand positioning", but we're talking about a slow-mo video part... A lot of people can clean a dub kink, but not everyone one of them look the same on vid.

I agree with casual, I am not overall super impressed with his way of skiing, although I will say he is someone I am always looking out for. Like creating any kind of art or music or whatever, 90% of what you come up with usually gets thrown out, and so in the process of creating new tricks and elements of style, there will certainly be things that get tried and thrown out. Some things show enough potential to warrant working on them for awhile until they become something amazing.

I know that, the difference between us is that I actually realize nobody cares what I think and I try to stick to the 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything'. Your argument was more polite and respectful than most on the site, but it's still just negativity about a skier a lot better than you.

I was just pointing out the fact that you're whole "No one cares what you (anyone) thinks" stance on posting, is at odds with you bothering to post at all.

I didn't post in this thread to be a dick. I was just throwing my thoughts out there, because...you know...that's what you do on a message board/thread.

The idea that Gagnier being infinitely better than me somehow strips me of the right to have an opinion, is just stupid.

I've seen you instigate similar, pointless little battles in other threads, so I'm just going to bow out of this back and forth because you clearly look for opportunities to attack people.

ummm you're the one who quoted me... Anyway I never said that stating your opinion was wrong its just incredibly pointless when it has to do with something like someones skiing style. And yes the fact that you aren't as good of him is important. If you were an expert in skiing or judging skiing (if there is such a thing) or some other highly respected member of the community then people might care what you think. But you aren't, and neither am I, so nobody else cares.

Giving your opinion on something that is a) measurable and b) actually has some effect on your life is a different story.

hes one of the "established" pros out of the times, when thall, cr johnson and all the guys were the best at every single part of skiing, rails, kicker, pipe and so on. now there are specialists for everything, it seems like every second string east coast guy could kill thall on rails,

and gagnier got everything, i remember taking x-gold with that sw 12 octo (or was it the US open and a sw 9?) i dk, but still sick as hell

I have thought he was a sick skier ever since red tape (still one of my favorite segs of all time) But i dont agree with calling the rodeo switch 540 with a with a pretzel 180, he is not switching directions mid air he is just adjusting his rotation before the take off so he lands switch. Sick trick but bad labeling.

Charles Gagnier is the most awesome skier Ive seen in awhile. He isnt cocky like most of the rider today, his style is impeccable and the tricks are insane. It sucks that his comps are not going so well...

I respect the one ski forward one ski backward trick. Even though it does not look so steazy one day I tried it skiing and i pulled a muscle. It takes mad skill.
