United's 1 pair per bag policy

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm flying out west next week and want to bring two pairs of skis but I was just on the United website and they a "1 pair of skis and poles per bag" policy. Does anyone know if they'll check or has anyone bypassed this. Do they actually give a shit or only care if I go over weight. I'm not that stoked on flying United but it was the only flight I could make out all day so I to fix all the possible kinks I could face before it's go time.

It's a weight issue more than anything.
They all have exceptions for sporting goods but they don't want you taking the piss out of them so they make it a limit of one pair under their system.
It's also a good way of them making extra money.
Even if you get stung for the second pair, It would be cheaper than hiring a second pair of skis

what company are you traveling with? I used Air Canada and when i was coming back from whistler the girl opened all of our ski bags and I don't know what she would've done if there was 2 pairs but I know that they don't like it when you pack stuff in the ski bag so if you can just put your skis and poles inside it that way you're safe but they probably won't bitch if you have a couple of t-shirts in, not sure.
ps: if you're traveling with air canada you gotta register your skis before leaving otherwise you have to pay 100$ extra-fee..

my mom works for untied and she thinks that policy is sutpid. yet she does have to enforce it. so i would say just try and get by and if they stop you then youll know. cuz different desk people will have different attitudes towards the rule.

curbside check in.
before you get up front, have at least $5 tip in hand before the guy handles your bag. i usually do $10.
I have gotten 60 lbs ski bags on multiple united flights using this method with no issue. They don't have scales outside, so they just sort of wing it. The key is to have the tip in your hand where he can see it.

What he said. I generally wouldn't give less than $15 as a decent tip if you have a bunch of stuff. I would have had an additional $200 of charges this summer if I hadn't done curbside check in and tossed the guy a $20. Curbside check in is the shit.

I didn't know about this curbside checkin when I was travelling with skis last time..
I went normal check-in and got through with no extra charges with Air Alaska and American Airlines..lucky I guess.

Burlington doesn't offer curbside check-in so I can't do that even though I'll definitely keep it in mind the in future. I need another plan.

ship fedex to where ever youre going? i had to do this with a bmx bike cause the airline wanted like 120 for the bike and fedex cost me like 56. im not sure what fees are for skis on airlines though, not sure if itd be worth it or not. If not id say go for it and hope for the best, and keep it under weight

i flew frankfurt - charlotte - denver with united and i had my park skis and my pow skis in the same bag, they didn't open it because it wasn't over 50 pounds.
you should check how heavy the bag is gonna be, if it's under 50 pounds you should be good
All times are Eastern (-5)
