IMO I think its too much, but i never use to like the new video section but now I think its great so maybe this will grow on me also.

The idea here was to blend the new video section and the old one...

Please let us know because very soon we're going to launch this as the only video section... of course with links to the old one.

We're actually going to launch the new section fully. This means that there's no more landing page where you choose between the old and the new!

We are keeping the link for now to the old section for people who still enjoy that style of viewing.

Remember that we are working diligently to improve the quality of our video system so that one day, you will upload ALL of your videos directly to newschoolers. So please, upload your videos directly to the site instead of embedding. As well, this allows your videos to be featured on the homepage, placed in NSTV and will soon allow inclusion in our new podcast.

One day we are going to have to disable embedding, but we're not going to do that until our system is just as good as the other offerings out there (vimeo, youtube, etc).

Give it a go, and please post feedback. We want to keep working to improve this thing so that everyone loves it and uses it all the time!

i strongly dislike it. the old one was fine. the new one has all the army ads and i hate flash players. they ruin the quality that people pay good money to achieve. its fine that there is a new flash section but id like the classic section to still be an option because thats the only one that i ever used anyway

Fuck it. IMO it sucks. I hate the new video section al ltogether. First of all the ads BLOW. 30 second ads? WTF...Then i want to watch again and I get a 15 second ad? WTF...I liked the original much better. I never have liked it at all. FUCK IT

It is kind of strange to look at partly because I am so used to the old video section. The only problem I have is that it doesn't look as clean as the old section because it seems like most of the videos don't have a thumbnail or just a black thumbnail.

We're going to disable the ads for videos less than a certain time... and work on capping the frequency so that you aren't completely blown away by them.

The new section also has the full-quality video available for download. If you hate the quality of the flash player then no problem, just scroll down to "DOWNLOAD ORIGINAL FILE" and blammo you can still download the full-quality original file. We're never going to disable this, and really all we did was add a flash player to the page.

In terms of foreign embeds, I understand that its annoying to not have them displayed in-line. But you have to understand that in order for newschoolers to exist, we need to run at least a few ads. If we can't run ads, and you guys just dump your videos on youtube (and have their ads displayed) then we will cease to exist.

We will diligently work to make sure that the video viewing experience is as good as possible. For those who hate the new stuff, just link over to the old view. Its right at the bottom of your quicklinks when in the video section.

This will change as more people upload directly to newschoolers, as when you do this it generates a thumbnail from your video.

The messyness is caused by the foreign embed videos. So upload your vids directly to newschoolers and everything will be ok. INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL FILE!

it would be sweet if the new video section used the same method for determining top rated videos as the old....Like an overall average number versus the new star rating system.  I can't find any of the top rated videos from the old page when i search by average rating with the new system.

I straight up hate it, 30sec acura ads...im 16 im not going to buy a 40k suv? and go army for what? I never knew how much i enjoyed the classic video section until i was forced to use the new one. if only one person rates a video as a 10 it comes up as full stars and you end up watching some random 5 second bail after a 30second car add.

Please bring back the classic!

God damn it guys... look at your page!! There are links to the classic video section in the quick links in the left side bar.

The top rated video section is exactly the same as well, there is zero change in the way this is calculated.

Please, before going crazy look at all the options1

dont like it. i think its annoying because half of the thumbnails are the "video remotely hosted" or whatever and i dont want to look at those. also you have to do a lot more scrolling down the page to see the videos, where as with teh simple list you can see more. please dont keep it this way for good, seriously.

The solution for the first thing is for people to not remotely host the videos! I am warning you that this will be the eventual truth... there will be no more remote hosting after we can fully dial in our system.

If the thumbnail is too big for the video, we can re-size this so its smaller. We wanted to try to mix the old and new views.

the flash player is killing the quality terribly, especially whereas it seems to me that part of making edits these days is learning to keep the quality as good as possible, which is why the old version was so much better, because it didnt compress the video at all when it was uploaded to ns. also, if everything was smaller and more like the old version it would probably be easier on the eyes, only being able to see 4-5 videos at a time kind of stinks. and also, knowing what the rating is and out of how many votes is pretty key, not just knowing what the overall rating is. because for me i usually dont watch many edits unless they have been rated over an 8 by a solid amount of poeople so that i know its going to be worth it to begin with..

why did you get rid of the "sort by top rated" button? i clicked on average rating and the top rated page was way different. did you change the rating system?

Not a fan of the new style. I have always been using the old one when we had the option page. I like to quickly look down the list and see what videos have a lot of comments and see what the number rating is. I don't like the star thing. Actually, keep the stars, but also add a # feature? Overall, not really digging the new one... maybe it will grow on me.

It most definatley needs tweaking.

It would be nice to see how many ratings and what score each video is given as well as the stars for those of us who don't want to watch all the videos.

If I have to mention one more time that you can still download the original file quite easily I'm going to snap.

As for the display, if what you liked better about the list was that there was more on the page, then the gallery view that used thumbnails and looked like the picture gallery display might have worked better. People complained and wanted the list view.

However, perhaps the thumbnails are too big? Is it not ok to scroll?

We can pretty easily add back information on vote and # of votes, and we'll do that.

It is in your blue quick links located about 1 inch to the left of where the old ones were. These links were being displayed twice on the page. Try it... click "top rated" on the left and you'll be at the same top rated section as before.

This has been addressed. We no longer display an ad for videos that are shorter than 30 seconds.

There was lots wrong with it. We can't do much with embedded videos... it doesn't allow us to link vids into our system, sell ads around them, syndicate out, use NSTV, add them to the podcast....

The old system was designed to save bandwidth. But since we've improved things a ton around here, we've got the bandwidth and at some point we were going to have to get you guys using OUR video section.

If we want Youtube and Vimeo to have all the skiing business, then what is the point of newschoolers? We needed to address our video situation and work as hard as we can to get it where you guys want it to be. But we NEED you to upload your videos to newschoolers...

We will keep working on it and improving the quality of the video section so that this isn't a complaint, its just where you store your skiing videos online.

the thing i don't like about it is the "star" rating system on the thumbnails page....I can't see how many times its been rated..which i really like quite honestly

i'd have to say # of times rated is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing. a bunch of video's might get rated ten, but it might have only been one kid that rated it that.

its good to see improvements are being made to the new video gallery.  number of ratings has been input and ads for videos less than 30 seconds have been removed.  but there are still things that need tweaking.

1. Take out the stars on the gallery display.  They look cheesy and I personally like to see the exact number!  When rating a video, I like the stars though, so keep them there, just not on the gallery front page.

2. Take out the related videos section.  It makes the page look so messy and it's terrible, to be honest.  I think it relates them by title and this just isn't sufficient.  Normally they are totally unrelated unless they have some keyword in it like "Superunknown" "Jiberish" "4bi9" or a name like Wallisch or something.

3. Take out the textbox with the embed code in it.  This also makes the page look messy.  Do something like Vimeo with the button linked to the code or like youtube and have it that shortened text box.

4. Make comments a more prominent feature on the page.  I feel like they are now second tier to everything else whereas before you could see them right when you clicked on the link to the video from the gallery page.  If my 2nd and 3rd suggestions are taken (unlikely) the problem would be solved.

People need to start living with the ads I think.  They are unfortunate, but deal with it.  It's not the end of the world.

We're working on improving the new video section as best we can, so feedback like this is fantastic!

I'll address in order...

1. Personally, I like the stars since it's a nice easy way to see if something is highly rated. However I do understand about the rating number, so I'll squeeze it in below the stars. And once I get around to it, I'll make a smaller set of stars for that listing. ;)

2. The video viewing page is going to undergo some drastic changes. We haven't yet integrated with the player's built in playlist which would allow us to ditch related videos on the page. The matching for Related is currently done on title, we will change that in the future to be more relevant. It first requires that we do some work on the gallery's back-end design.

3. The embed code is actually in the player, the icon looks like:   We had a much nicer skin setup, but the embed code option wasn't skinned properly and you couldn't see it. We're currently working with a flash developer who can develop a nicer skin with a better Embed button. ;)   We can then ditch the embed box on the page.

4. Agreed.

As for the ads, that's life. The fact of the matter is that serving 200MB+ files with no essentially no restrictions is costly. The video section is our biggest consumer of bandwidth, disk space and encoding time. We're doing everything we can to make the ads more relevant and less intrusive. We've already restricted ads on any video shorter than 30 seconds, and we will experiment will different ad types such as overlays or companions. We want to make the section work as well as it can for our users and advertisers.

Paul addressed a lot of this stuff well.

The layout of the video page certainly needs to be tweaked. I think that we fucked that one up from the beginning. The Next/Back/Load random video links are massive... and quite pointless. With the new player we just added, we can get rid of those links and make the player widescreen, and taking up the whole top of the page.

As for ads, we'll get it dialed in...

The comments and extra crap on the actual video page is a great point. That page is pretty cluttered, and the most important thing is the comments and the video. These should be much closer together, and we've got a bunch of ideas to make this happen. We will be working to try and tweak that page, as all of those problems come back to an overall super shitty page layout.

Is the main complaint with the gallery list that the thumbnails are too big and it is too long? You liked the tiny thumbnails?

Please answer this question, both haters and likers combined. If only people who hate say something, we change based on them.

i think the thumbnails (the pictures) are pretty pointless.  the only thing it does is makes the page a bit more exciting.  if you're going to keep them, make them smaller.  also, the links could be smaller in general.  there's lots of negative space below and to the right whereas in the old one, every inch mattered.  i like that more.

a lot of the other info given about each video is also pointless.  i almost never read "skier" "location" or "date added."  i don't like the stars on the gallery page either (i like them inside the video pages though).  i think it'd be cool if they were replaced with the rating and number of ratings in huge faunt.

i think if you based the new gallery display off the old one, it would be much better.
