Tricky shinbang predicament

Alright so Saturday I skied for like 3 hours in a pre-season railjam at my hill, and I got a hint of shinbang.
Here's the problem.

At first, I had my boots SUPER tight, but then they cut the circulation off to my feet and that hurt like a fucker, so I loosened them up a little bit. They were still kinda tight, but I noticed that I started to get shinbang, and the outside of the bottom of my calves started feeling really tight and painful. I took my boots off and I could hardly walk the pain in my calves was so intense.

Advice?

naw you got to get some softer or park boots! thats all there is to it! i had the worst shin bang for the longest time. i bet you have a boot over the flex of 100!

am i right?

you might have to pad portions of the ankle/shin area to even out the pressure you're getting. go to a decent shop and have them put some side pads in, providing they know what they're doing.  if you're getting pain in a certain spot, chances are it's because that's the spot where you have the most contact with the boot. even out the contact points with side pads and it should even out the pressure, and pain. but go to a shop.

also, softer boots arent always the way to go. i dont think i could ski in something under a 100 flex cuz it feels too mushy and doesnt give me support. although if the thread creator is like 5'6'' and 110 lbs, then yea a softer boot would probably work.  to the thread creator, what's your height/weight, ski size, and what boots are you in?

if your one of the people that fights shin bang you really must use softer boots. i fighted shin bang so bad for over 3 years! tried everything! sure foot, insoles, more/less shin pads, working out, iceing, saw a orthopedist, nothing made them better, some days i couldn't go skiing. if your someone like me you have to live with the mushy boots. now im used to them and i would'ent have it any-other way.

i ski on a 120 flex boot and i swear by them. helps keep your foot attached to the boot better and therefore eliminates any gap that might form in the cuff of your boot. thats why youre getting shinbang. backwards pressure with any ability for your calf to move inside you boot creates leverage on a point that does not bend, i.e. your shin. keeping your calf from moving inside your boot will minimize this.

oh...and stop landing backseat!

it might be that your boots are tight but still too big, if theres room at the front of your boot your foot will slide around a bit no matter how tight the buckles are.

Very true...
Ive found the key to reducing shinbang is to simpily eliminate the gap between 1) your shin and tounge 2) between the tounge and plastic. Its a tricky combo to conquer though. The best way I have found is through booster straps. They can be tricky though. The booster straps purpose is to 1) Close these gaps 2) offer elastic rebound after impact (when you land and your boots flex with NO booster straps they will often reach their maximum flex point which is  1) either how far the top of your boots can pivot back and forth on the bottom 2) or that damn seatbelt like strap that is made for a race boot and stupidly comes in park boots.) By adding booster straps correctly, (which can be tricky like I said because they are not integrated into your boot and therefore work with every boot differently) it can eliminate the 2 gaps AND provide that elastic rebound after impact ultimately reducing shinbang (I would like to say eliminate shinbang but until they are integrated into a boot to get rid of the variation in their fit on each particular boot, they will always help 'reduce' shinbang.) So give em a try and play around with them on your boot and see what eliminates those two gaps the best and hopefully you'll be skiing painless shortly.

Ok so I guess you're supposed to INSTALL booster straps? Last season I just wrapped them around my boot on top of the factory installed strap, could that be why they weren't working? Are you supposed to REMOVE the old strap?

Also the installation seems  like it would be super complicated. The boot has rivets and such.
Could anyone find an online manual on how to do it?

yeah thatd explain why they were working.  if the straps are riveted in, take a drill to them n drill them out, then go to your local hardware store n find something the same size. most race boots already have standard hardware on them, so thats definitely your best bet.  ive done this on boots before, theres really no way to mess it up. just make sure you take the liner out first to avoid making some unwanted holes in the real spoiler.

putting them over the old strap really isnt gonna do much for you.

drill out them rivets, get an insert/screw with a washer that fits the hole, or two depending on how the strap is attached, tighten those, n youll be set up.

ya, i had this problem too. if ur too cheap to get new softer boots (which i totally understand) try taking a 1/2-inch thinsulite (those thin yellow foam camping pads) and cutting some boot-tongue-shaped pieces. then coat them in duct tape so they dont stick to anything (the foam is kinda grippy) and slip them in between the tongue of ur boot and ur shin. it helped me a lot.

To lazy to read above so this might be said but,

USE BOOSTER STRAPS THE RIGHT WAY and they will work wonders!

You need to keep the top buckles on your boots a little looser than normal, and find the tightness you desire with the booster strap. This allows the strap to stretch (if your buckles are to tight the strap has nowhere to stretch to). Shinbang no more.

I use them outside the shell, but I find that they work really well.

I used to get really bad shin bang in my alpine boots, bad bruises...

hasn't happened since I got the Booster. Best $30 you can spend on your boots

now, someone explain this. I was rockin some boots that were givin to me for free and they were extremely way to large. i skied them for like 2 years, and skiing alot. and i never once got shin bang from them. and i still dont get it in my spk's. so is shin bang from not having good enough calves, bad boots, or a combination of both? its a mystery to me...

Full Tilt's and SPK's fit completely different.  Go to a boot fitter and find a boot that fits for YOU. Just because one is a "park boot," that doesn't mean it will fit your foot correctly.

^ true dat, I've just heard full tilts are really comfy though and dont really push you forward too much. since i have flat feat i like standing flat and i heard FT's are more like that. I have absolutely no arch in my foot.

to the thread creater id go to bootfiitng shop if there is one available around you or ask around and see where the best place to get custom work done to your boots is because they will be able to give you the best advice and for the people who are all over full tilts dick ya they make great boots but its nothing new just because they come in some fancy colors its the same as kryptons and the old raichlee (sp) boots basically the exact same boot

it sounds like your just cramping which is normal if you dont stay in shape, anyways eat stuff with potassium in it like bananas. shin bang happens to the best of use just get a better liner i dont really have any advice for that.

Everything you have heard in this thread saying something along the lines of... "get spks" "Get Full Tilts" "Get Dalbellos" and etc, are inherently false. For those of you having shin bang problems here is the absolute best solution, and by best I mean seriously do it.. GET SOME BOOTS THAT FIT!

Seriously, you hear it all the time, it is in nearly ever boot thread, but seems to just get lost in the thread now that people are getting used to hearing it. But people say it for a reason. SPKs and Full Tilts do not fit a super majority of the skiing population, and based on experience a huge percentage of people are wearing the wrong sized boot. And don't just sit back and say "yeah, but mine fit just fine", because likelihood is, they don't.

So for the love of god, and your shins, seriously go to a bootfitter. Don't listen to kids on this site tell you that a certain boot will solve all of your problems. Don't listen to people grossly generalize ski boot brands (ie. salomon boots are wide). Don't even listen to Seth tell you that Full Tilts are the best boots ever. Just go find a bootfitter that knows that they are doing and get some boots that fit your feet the way that they are meant to.

i disagree with this so much, different boots fit different people man. I own spk's and i fucking hate them. They are the least comfortable boot I have ever worn and you'll still get shinbang. A boot isnt going to solve shinbang, it's caused by the pressure of your leg going behind the boot when you land, no boot will ever completely solve shin bang, ever. I had the worst shinbang last year with my SPK's where i couldnt ski for an entire week, if i even tried to land off a rail i'd collapse that is how bad it was. Best cure for shinbang is workout your calves, and get more shin bang? weird eh, your shins build up after a while and it will stop hurting so much. as for spk's i have flat feet, they do not fit everyone, go try a bunch on and find which works the best.

You pretty much said exactly what I said, except with the addition of shit that didn't make sense.

-You say that different boots fit different people... I completely agree.
-You say that you owned SPKs and fucking hated them... that is because they didn't fit you.
-Earlier you said that you hated your SPKs and were going to buy some Full Tilts... This is by far the stupidest choice I think I have ever heard anyone make. SPKs and Full Tilts are by far the furthest boots from one another. So either you have to admit that you don't fit in your SPKs (making it not the boots problem), or that you have no idea what you are talking about with the Full Tilts.
-You also asked which Full Tilts you should buy as if they fit differently... They do not, they are all the same last, just different colors and flexes. I can nearly guarantee that none of them will fit you, especially if you say that you fit into SPKs, which you also do not.
-Although working out your calves and such is a great way of helping with shin bang, the BEST way to cure it is to get a boot that fits you everywhere, and that includes the calf region.

And for everyone out there, do NOT go "Try on a bunch of different boots" because if you are having boot problems, it is because you don't know how they are supposed to fit. Get someone who knows what they are doing to boot fit you. Your boots should not be comfortable just standing there in the shop, they should not feel like slippers, you should not buy them too big to give yourself more room in the toes... all of these will give you problems.
