Alright im still confused by the karma system, i dont really get how im supposed to rate other people, and mine seems to fluctuate for no apparent reason. It was wavering between 49 and 50 and now just dropped 5 points to 45 when i havent done anything offensive, and im confused.

yeah mine seems to move around for no reason, i didnt do anything differently, they should let us know how the karma system works, what makes it go up and down... then i'd know how to be a good ns member

But then it would turn artificial and everyone would do the things which make karma go up - just so they can increase their points, not so they can be good members.

I don't like how after a minimal amount of positive activity, my karma went below the neutral rating, and stayed there. What's this about, I don't like being below neutral, everything I've done is positive even if there was very little of it, I didn't piss anybody off.

I have a proposal, how about some sort of feedback system for bad/good karma, because personally, I would like to know what the fuck i did wrong for my karma to go down, or what I apparently did good  to make it go up. it can be 100% anonymous, but I mean if someone is taking the time to go into your profile to rate you good/bad, or now with the + - posts thing, there should be some form of at least optional addition to give people feedback on why they are receiving said karma.

I got to tell you that in "reality" your Karma is all fine. I just investigated that tonight. Right now, no Karma rating at all is better than just 1 good rating. It sounds odd I know!

Case 1: If you are a virgin user. Wich would means that you just created your account yeterday, never posted anything and has never been Karma rated. Your Karma rating would be straight 50.

Case 2 : If you are an interactive user that posted some messages in the forums and stuff in the gallery. And you has never been rated, then your Karma should be around above 50, let's say maybe 55.

Case 3 : Then here is where it starts to doesn't work properly. Like if you are an interactive user and got rated positive a few time, your Karma rating will go down.

Other cases (few negative ratings, a lot of positive ratings, a lot of negative ratings)  : I don't know much what really happens.

In clear it means that even if you got rated up, if it's just a few time, your Karma will go down. And here is the proof. I retrieved the Karma you received from other users. And it appears that you only got voted once. And here is the result  :

And here is an other example. Before tonight, I only got rating above 5. I guess that 5 or above 5 is positive since they only clicked +. And as a user, I uploaded a bunch of pictures and videos which they got rated pretty good. Also, I am a donator. So, my Karma should be good no? Not really, when I checked it, my Karma was at 49. And personnally I got a bit frustrated of that in the past. I wondered what I could had done wrong to get that.

im not upset that my karma is below 50 or anything, im just saying that it would be nice to know why you're rated down if you are, like if it was mandatory for some sort of written reason to rate karma up or down regardless of length of the response, would possibly deter some people from giving - karma for stupid things such as losing and argument and being a sore loser. I know that at this point my idea is very unrealistic, as there is a lot of work an effort that needs to be applied to make any system like this work, as well as the fact that there is nothing discouraging people from falsifying reasons. My reasoning however, to making karma a more tedious process to mark up/down is that, as stupid as many may make karma out to be, it really shouldn't be something that you just decide "oh well ____ made an asshole comment in a thread towards ____, he deserves - karma", people should actually giving people +/- karma because they actually did something good or legitimately bad towards someone.

Guys we certainly understand that Karma has been a bit tweaked out since we launched it.   THe original idea was just to launch, test a bit and wait until we had this rating/display system in the forums.   Once you guys rated each other more we were going to look at the whole system and see what we can do to improve it. 

Granted, there was about a 4 month delay between step #1 and step #2, but hey with JD's help we got there and now we can finally figure this thing out. 

Please do assign Karma.   If you see someone being a moron, take it away.   If you see someone being a good person, give lots of it! 

Then we can see if the system needs to be changed or if people just haven't been rating each other.

I think I got your point of view better now.

But the purpose of that new tool is actually to makes that it's a lot easier to rate somebody. It's done like that because most of the time, people do things in a goal of something. And unfortunately, the number of people who reach their goals decrease a lot when it gets more complicated to accomplish them.

So, if we do what you suggest, deter people who rate negatively. Then it will works in both ways. It will also deter people who want to use it for the purpose of rating somebody down because they dederve it. And I don't think that's what we want. But this is how I see it.

Man, your suggestion was very good. It clearly demonstrated what's the problem is and how we should handle it. But I think the procedure you suggested would be very hard to implement. And it may also be too restrictive to flow well as said above.

Anyway, your suggestion made me think a bunch about that problem and this made me have idea about how we could solve that problem. I won't tell it there. Because, it would be a non sense to reveal how we will process that. Like, it would be similar to give to everybody an instruction manual of how your security system works at home.

I just posted this in the other karma thread, but it looks like it could receive a better response here..
And this thread has a lot of people who are evidence of my confusion as to why a lot of helpful members are rated poorly.

I don't even know how it affects their rating, whenever I +karma someone I see no change. I feel like it should be a lot more user based, but it's not. A lot of notorious posters have pretty high karma, which I'm not saying is bad, but then a lot of people who I see helping out/ posting a lot have mid-40's karma.. even if I add to their karma.

I guess it only seems lame to me because 50 is the middle and other people as well as me are stuck below that, and I'm not sure why. With plenty of posts (okay.. not every single one is amazingly helpful but still..) and uploaded pictures/ reviews I don't see why it's not higher.

Anyway, this new addition of karma directly in the posts is definitely a nice improvement to the system, and hopefully a step in the right direction to more accurate ratings.

Hah yeah we aint tellin' you guys shit about how the karma is calculated! 

Now that rating is easy do lots of it... we can super easily change the weightings of how its calculated and I'm positive we'll get something out of this.

Another thing to mention is that karma is only calculated once per day.   So when you do rate someone (and JD has tweaked the system to work better) it won't take affect until the next day.

I have asked this question multiple times, but have not really gotten an explanation.

Why is it that, when I know I have been karma rated by other members, the box in my profile that says "other rate me" still says "N/A" ???

Good question but I am not sure of this one.

Since it's the box where people rates you, I would say that it just stay there for saving a little bit programming work. And it would means, "This is the place where other people rates you".
