Back in January, a minute segment from ‘Mind The Gap’, a freestyle ski movie, showing Peter Olenick skiing down the escalators at Angel underground station in London, was posted to YouTube.
Police too slow to prosecute
Three months later it has hit the headlines, although now actually too late for British Transport Police to prosecute. This case has serious consequences for aspiring freestyle movie makers in the UK.
The BBC and numerous other news agencies have been reporting that Transport for London (TfL) have urged police to take the "strongest possible action" against any similar offenders. A Tfl spokesman said: "This is a dangerous, stupid and irresponsible act that could have resulted in serious injury or death to not only the individual concerned, but other passengers."
Unidentified man?
Despite the fact that the Olenick’s name is shown quite clearly at the end of the clip, as well as a plug for ‘Mind The Gap’, the BBC report that the man was ‘unidentified’ and British Transport Police (BTP) have urged the man to contact them (which seems unlikely).
The more serious aspect to this case is that this is, quite frankly, a terrifying stunt that could easily have led to a serious injury. One hopes that in the search for even more unusual footage, freeskiers and boarders keep the safety of the public in mind, as well as themselves!
