How bad are they really? Has anyone heard about Ted Johnson?

A New York Times story earlier this year quoted a noted forensic pathologist who studied Waters' brain tissue and determined that it resembled that of an 85-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease, likely the result of multiple concussions suffered during Waters' career.

The numerous head traumas, said Dr. Robert Cantu, co-director of the Neurological Sports Injury Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital, have left Johnson with post-concussion syndrome as well as signs of early brain damage that Cantu fears is permanent.

I am really wondering what people do to protect themselves. How many people out there where helmets? Mouth guards? I know in moguls and aerials a bunch of people are starting to wear mouth guards but what about freeride. Well that’s it. Input is wanted even if you just want to call me a nerdy ass bitch.

i wear a helmet now. ive got 2 concussions skiing so i wear a helmet.
i think it is a smart idea to wear a helmet. it has saved me many times.
like today i went for a 7 for the first time. i got the rotation but nose dived and landed on my head and shoulder. w/out a helmet i for surely would have done something to my neck and/or got another concussion

i wear a helmet now pretty much every time i ski, i dont want to but one day i was goofing around on some rails and i kinda had this feeling like i was gunna end up killing myself so i borrowed my friends helmet (kinda gross i know) and maybe like 4 runs later i did something or another and flipped backwards and hit my head on the rail, i was fine because of the helmet so yeah i think theyre a good idea.

but i dont really see a need for anything else except some pads for my hips, those would be useful

I don't ski without my helmet. There is no reason not to wear one: they look steezy, are warm and more comfortable than a beanie, and have integrated audio. What is not to like?

My friend just had to get brain surgery. We were skiing and he hit his head. He thought he had just gotten a concussion, but then 2 weeks later he started to develop a studder. The next day he could barely talk and had lost feeling in his hands. I believe if he was wearing a helmet he probably wouldn't have had to get a piece of his skull cut out.

yeah once you get used to one you just forget about it. I forgot my helmit the other day and had to wear a hat. It just felt weird.

concusions hurt like shit. i started wearin a helmet because of it, and i wont try anything without it.

I've had 5 bad concussions....and like 2 minor ones. That's with a helmet on too...


And what sucks is that the human body only has so many concussions in it. Once you hit a certain point you just don't have any left and go into a coma.

Yeah, always wear a helmet. I haven't been wearing one (ordered one last week, waiting for it to ship), but last night my friend saved his face with his. He was coming into the lift area and somehow caught an edge and turned himself face-first into a sign. The while he was falling, he hit his face on a garbage can and landed on a metal bar. Without his helmet/goggles, he would have seriously messed up his face. It was pretty funny to watch though.

i fell down a flight or three of stairs and got a concussion. and i got one last year too. they're pretty weird, it's just like having brain fog for an afternoon

I was in the park today and somehow I ended up inverted (I was doing a 3, don't ask), and I landed on my back/head.  It didn't hurt at all, and I didn't even notice that my helmet had cracked al the way down the side untill someone pointed it out.  I can't imagine what would have happened if I didn't have it on.  I mean, it worked so well I didn't even feel it.  It's a Hi-fi btw

ive had two really severe concussions...like black out seizure concussions (while wearing a helmet)..so i wear a helmet now and a mouthguard occasioanlly like when im guinea pigging a jump or whatever

helmets really dont help concussions much at all. unless its a helmet that has soft cushion. because concusssions are your brain hitting the skull and a hard helmet wont help that...

Wear mouth gards and helmets and you wont get a concution. I knocked my self silly the other day right before the aspen open it sucked.

ive had a really minor concussion once it was basically just a migrane for about a week and a half but i always wear my D2 helmet skiing because i love my brain to much

my friend got a concussion today on the lake raponda rail it was lame, he fell cuz his shitty binding popped off when he popped off the lip.

one more thing is that the more concussions you've had, the more prone you are to getting another concussion.

I have had five confirmed concussions, I now wear a helmet but when i started skiing aggressively in the 90's helmets were unheard off. I am very scared of getting any more. I can honestly say I know I am changed. I lived in portland oregon for a year and one night up at hood I hit my chin and all i remember is puking outside of the huckleberry inn, and then 3 days later i came to in the hospital with my friends looking at me. That was the worst one. I also knocked myself out in a bump comp when i was 14 and slid across the finish line like a ragdoll. Long story short helmets are a good thing and the hallucination's and confusion/stress during a concussion is very scary and unnerving. buckle up kiddies

Ive been riding for burton since i was 7 and have never gone a day without a helemt.
Back in the day they were so heavy and clunky but these new
helmets are like so so so light now.
Like ill be inside eating lunch and my friends will be like you still have your helmet on and ill be like o i do?
Theyre also soo soo soo warm. Like ill have my helmet on and itll be all snug and ill be so warm.
Theres really no reason to wear one.
Im glad i can work with burton to make new and lighter helemtes.

Can anyone tell me where thats from?

I came up short on a backflip on Friday night. I don't remember anything between dropping in and waking up in the ambulance. My helmet saved me.

i got a concussion with my helmet on once....i couldnt see out of one of my eyes for a while and then one side of my body started to go numb.

im glad helmets are becoming more popular. they are such a good idea. the onlything i dont like, is its harder to show off my gnar knitting skills. i have to stik to simple earflar things for my helmet instead of dope beanies. but whatever. i hit my head too much not to wear one
