The Landon McGauley Project is an on-going mission of the High Fives Winter Empowerment Program Service. High Fives Athlete: Landon, a 17-year-old downhill mountain biker from Quesnel, B.C. Canada suffered a paralyzing spinal cord injury during a race on July 4, 2010. With the help of the High Fives Foundation, the highly motivated young athlete, Landon is pursuing a dream of making the Canadian Paralympic Ski Team and competing in the 2014 Sochi, Russia Paralympic Games. August 5-9, 2012 the High Fives Foundation took a group Winter Empowerment Fund Athletes to San Clemente, CA to learn the sport of adaptive surfing at San Onofre State Park's "Dog Patch" beach. Landon McGauley, and a handful of other athletes traveled with the Foundation and a media team to Southern California for their first ever Adaptive Surf Camp. A consistent 3-6' swell delivered gorgeous sets of waves for the talented team to discover new muscle memory skills on Infinity Waveskis (sit down waveskis). With an all-star cast of adaptive surf community members on hand to show everyone the ropes, the three days spent on the water went by way too fast. The inaugural trip helped expand the reach of the Foundation by providing a new outlet for those that suffer a life altering injury. Additionally the skills learned are transferable to winter action sports and will help in the recovery process of all involved in the great sport of adaptive surfing. Overall, it was great to re-connect with Landon and keep in line with his goal of making the podium in the Paralympic Games. Stay tuned for more updates on the Landon McGauley Project...
