Hotdog Hans 2

by Newschoolers
Feb 2022 - 3.9K views

The legend of Hotdog Hans is back!

People have been going down the mountain the same way since the sport began. Then, one day, Hotdog Hans came along and moved the whole sport forward by going down the mountain backward. Free-skiing was born, and the rest is history. But these punks forgot who started it all. Hans is here to remind them!

Newschoolers Awards 2021: Nominees: Comp MVP

by Newschoolers
Feb 2021 - 310 views

Love them or hate them, competitions are a huge part of the freeski world. We watch and cover all the major events, and there are some guys out there who make the whole process more enjoyable, courtesy of unique style or interesting trick selection. We wanted to recognize the fact that even though they don’t always come out on top of the podium, their skiing is often the most inspiring to us and the core ski audience.

The nominees for Comp MVP are:

Ferdinand Dahl

Colby Stevenson

Elias Syrja

Henrik Harlaut

Mathilde Gremaud

The 2021 NS Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.

Newschoolers Awards 2021: Nominees: Crew of the year

by Newschoolers
Feb 2021 - 404 views

One of the best parts of skiing is being out on the mountain or in the streets with your friends. Aka anywhere with the right people. More often than not, you start passing a camera around while you have your fun. And so crews become a cornerstone of the media landscape too. This award goes to the crew that has had the most impressive 2020, judged by their output and how stoked their vibe got us. The Newschoolers Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.

Shoutout to @-Dan , who came through with some cash from Arsenic to go towards the winner's next project.

Newschoolers Awards 2021: Nominees: Best Short Video

by Newschoolers
Feb 2021 - 457 views

Short ski videos have been the blood pumping through the veins of Newschoolers since we added the video section waaay back. We variously call them edits, shorts, short films, and more, and it’s hard to know where exactly to draw the line between the three. For the NS awards, cuts over 10 minutes were eligible for Outstanding Video Project. Those sub-10 minute films, were judged as shorts. And whatever you call them, we couldn’t have an awards without recognizing perhaps the most important part of ski media in our eyes. The Newschoolers Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.

This year's nominees are:

Intent - Dylan Siggers/Jake Strassman
Switftcurrent - Maggie Voisin/Good Company
Forrgive - Forre
Swirl - Mitchell Brower
Resilience - Sammy Carlson

Newschoolers Awards 2021: Nominees: Outstanding Video Project

by Newschoolers
Feb 2021 - 396 views

The Newschoolers awards are back, though looking slightly different as a result of social distancing. We believe that ski films are the heart and soul of the freeski scene, so this award could be argued to be the most significant of all. We considered all video projects that were posted online without a paywall in 2020 as eligible for this award, which essentially comes down to everything except for the one or two movies still being released in that way. The Newschoolers Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.

The nominees are:

Bermuda - @strictly

Magma 2 - @MAGMA.film Crew (@AlexHall , @hunterhess , Owen Dahlberg)

Keeshfile 20 - @Keesh

Nothing - @Level1 (Freedle/Parker White)

Skivas - Bug Visionaries & @colineballetbaz

Tilted Perspectives | Bobby Brown Backcountry Skiing

by Newschoolers
Dec 2020 - 1K views

Titled Perspectives challenged us to see the world through a different lens. Our goal was to highlight the creativity of backcountry skiing with a variety of unique perspectives. We focused on 4K camera movement and time-lapse imagery to create an immersive and artistic view as we navigate the Teton Range around Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

We teamed up with Après Visuals to see the world through a different lens. They increased the level of production from start to finish. Amon Baker and the team used a RED Cinema 5k and 4k along with Atlas anamorphic lenses to create the distinct style of the film. They skied with the RED, mounted it to a Polaris snowmobile with a Gimbal, set up a 200-yard Cable Cam, and flew it on the Alta drone. Après Visuals can do it all, and it was a pleasure to work with them when creating our newest video. Enjoy!

Thank you, @Red Bull @Red Bull Snow, Spyder, Smith, @GoPro #GoPro, Crosson, and dasoro for all of your support with this project.

SKIVAS: Coline Ballet-Baz and Friends Are Redefining Female Freeski

by Newschoolers
Dec 2020 - 10.1K views

Coline Ballet-Baz introduces her new project SKIVAS featuring 10 of the best female skiers and snowboarders during the 2019/2020 season. The 100% female film proves that these ‘Ski/Divas’ are pushing the boundaries of freedom, creativity and sisterhood on and off the mountain.

After many years competing, Coline wanted to go back to what made her excited about freesking at the beginning : friendship, freedom and constant discovery. Through this movie, Coline wants to show that freeskiing is more than just a sport, it’s a lifestyle, an art.

From the streets of Quebec City to the great mountains of Chamonix, via the backcountry of La Rosière, Coline and her team were able to finish shooting the film just before the closure of the stations and borders in March 2020. From street tricks to vertiginous steep slopes, these ten modern-day warriors are out to break boundaires and push their limits.

Selected for the festivals: Montagne en Scène, HighFive, IF3, BANFF, Kendal Mountain Festival, SnowVison Festival, Montagne au Féminin and We Love Pow Pow.
