Here are the highlights from the 2018 Quiksilver Young Guns Ski Final. Thibault Magnin, Sam Lobinsky, Konnor Ralph and Simon Hillis made it through the rounds of Instagram voting and arrived at Whistler Blackcomb for a week of skiing with Sammy Carlson.

They rode from dawn to dusk. They hit everything. They laughed. They cheered. They yard saled. They high-fived. They had the time of their lives.

At the end, Thibault Magnin came out the winner of $10k.

Eric Hjorleifson (Hoji) needs little introduction. He is simultaneously an acclaimed professional backcountry athlete, and notorious gear tinkerer, designer, and fabricator. There is no equivalent, no one at his level of skiing proficiency with such a meticulous, hands-on approach to their own personal equipment.

Hoji's brilliance in both skiing and design was recently highlighted by the launch of a new backcountry ski boot he developed in collaboration with Dynafit over the course of several years. This is certainly a milestone in Hoji’s career as an athlete-designer, but it definitely won’t be the last. Quietly, thoughtfully, and with little fanfare or celebration, Hoji will undoubtedly continue to work in the shadows, finding solutions and improvements that will benefit skiers across the globe.

Hoji's unique abilities, and deep level of care for a better experience in the mountains is why we reached out to him in 2012 with our first Dissent prototypes. We have always appreciated his input, ideas, and the ability to test gear to its limit. Today, we feel the same way we did then: the most important gear improvements are the result of a relentless focus on the details, executed by people who truly understand and care about their time in the mountains.

The Mountains Are Calling explores the breathtaking valleys and peaks of the Central Kootenay’s in Beautiful British Columbia. Professional skier Dane Tudor and the young up and coming talent Simon Hillis take a six-week journey in Dane’s custom expedition trailer. Dane and Simon bring together their versatile skiing abilities riding untouched powder at the local secret spots while taking an introspective look at one’s attraction to the mountains, different types of snow conditions and terrain. The film was designed and created by Dane who has always had a desire to create a film based on his passion for the mountains.

The fourth installment of giving flowers features none other than Pep Fujas. Phil and Eric discuss his best selling pro model, his legendary video parts and more.

"His wholehearted commitment on and off snow has repeatedly elevated skiing to a new plateau. His video part in Session 1242 is a game changer—like a checker to chess. Fact is, some even confessed, it caused them to quit. His first ever pro model ski, the Fujative, ran more numbers than the matrix.

He is a vital piece to the trinity of your favorite skier’s favorite ski movie—IDEA. He popularized no pole skiing and broke convention on the biggest stage by competing with no poles at X-games with Andy Mahre. There's a research team on retainer searching for the runs, to this day. It's like a unicorn.

Tilted Perspectives | Bobby Brown Backcountry Skiing

Titled Perspectives challenged us to see the world through a different lens. Our goal was to highlight the creativity of backcountry skiing with a variety of unique perspectives. We focused on 4K camera movement and time-lapse imagery to create an immersive and artistic view as we navigate the Teton Range around Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

We teamed up with Après Visuals to see the world through a different lens. They increased the level of production from start to finish. Amon Baker and the team used a RED Cinema 5k and 4k along with Atlas anamorphic lenses to create the distinct style of the film. They skied with the RED, mounted it to a Polaris snowmobile with a Gimbal, set up a 200-yard Cable Cam, and flew it on the Alta drone. Après Visuals can do it all, and it was a pleasure to work with them when creating our newest video. Enjoy!
