Backflips in the backcountry. Steeze in the park. And a lot of insane skiing in between.
Here are the highlights from the 2018 Quiksilver Young Guns Ski Final. Thibault Magnin, Sam Lobinsky, Konnor Ralph and Simon Hillis made it through the rounds of Instagram voting and arrived at Whistler Blackcomb for a week of skiing with Sammy Carlson.
They rode from dawn to dusk. They hit everything. They laughed. They cheered. They yard saled. They high-fived. They had the time of their lives.
It never really felt like a contest — until Sammy picked a champion and somebody won $10k.

Off Piste With is a new series from NS, taking a look at skiers who live the ski life a bit differently. We wanted to find out what makes their unique minds tick. First up is Maximillian Smith aka BMack, who has been a breath of fresh air in the ski scene for a long time now. He might not have made the cut in SuperUnknown way back when, but as one of the founding members of The Bunch, BMack has been bouncing and swerving his way around ski hills worldwide ever since. He's definitely doing it differently these days, living city life while making a real difference... and still crushing it on the planks. We took a look behind the scenes of his life in this first episode of Off Piste With.

Innovative skiing mixed with creative filming and sustainable traveling.

I wanted to experiment with the idea of traveling to skiing with an electric car as the only means of transportation. I also wanted to prove that you can get really good footage and do amazing projects with really low carbon footprint. Sweden has a goal to have a carbon free transportation fleet by 2030 and EV's will obviously have a huge play in that transition. The video is filmed during a 3200km/2000miles road trip around the Swedish mountains and is a little "slap in the face" to those who say longer winter trips with electric cars are not possible ;) Global temps are rising, winters are getting shorter and skiers are the first ones out the door in this race against climate change. This is a contemporary ski video not only because of the creative skiing and video making but also because sustainable ski trips is a hot topic within the winter sports community and because electric cars is the definition of "new wave".

From Colby: With the month of February wide open (no competitions), we set out to build jumps and shred lines in Utah and Wyoming. The name IGNITE came to mind because it really lit the fire inside to ski and film backcountry for many years to come!
Big thanks to Monster Energy, K2 Skis, and MountainFLOW eco-wax for supporting this vision.

Hunter Hess is a skier's skier. One of the trio behind the biggest movie trilogy of recent years, the Magma movies, he's also a decorated halfpipe athlete and frankly, just a lovely bloke. There aren't many skiers out there still competing at the highest level, as well as stacking clips in both the street and the backcountry. We put your questions to Hunter in this latest installment of 5 Questions, presented by Dragon Alliance.

Jossi has been around since the 'golden days' and finally took an X Games gold of his own on what must be a record 24th attempt. He's been to the Olympics for pipe and slopestyle, filmed countless movie parts, and is unquestionably one of the most stylish, recognizable skiers out. Currently crushing it in the backcountry with the Deviate crew, Jossi has made a full transition from comp skier to backcountry boss. He's recovered from more injuries than we care to count, become an endurance cyclist, kills on a skateboard, and. if Instagram is to be believed, become something of a Masterchef to boot. Here's five questions with the Zero Spin god, presented by Dragon Alliance.

Since the dawn of time, everything that has lived and breathed on this planet has been subject to the whims of Mother Nature. The nature of an adventurer is inherently rogue; typically wild in character, subject to the fancy of their imagination. We are unequivocally drawn to nature’s rawest fury and deepest mysteries. These are the irreverent souls who pursue the edge.
In the winter of 2017, the magnitude of winter's force was on full display. Telephone poll-snapping storms pounded the Wyoming landscape. Regions to the west, recently left arid and forgotten, were gifted with unprecedented accumulation. Blizzards in Europe buried towns in an instant before disappearing just as fast, leaving the lucky few who were there to wonder if it even happened. A Bolivian expedition found grace above 18,000 feet before the elements went rogue and the humans reluctantly heeded warnings from above.
Join the TGR team as they embark on an adventure filled with fury and glory, and witness the unimaginable.

Eric loads up his truck and roadtrips from Oregon to Sun Valley, Idaho to rendezvous with Karl Fostvedt at his local stomping ground. After Karl shows Eric a few spots in town, the two gas up the sleds and head into the backcountry looking for fresh snow, windlips, and untracked terrain. Between rooping sleds and slapping fives, Karl and Eric find a couple natural features to lap, on the very same terrain that Karl explored as a kid and that helped to shape his skiing today.

Bucket Clips, an idea cooked up over the course of several phone calls between NS (Twig) and Rosina Friedel, returns for a third edition. It's been incredibly inspiring to see a community spring up around this project and turn this from an idea into a living breathing production, with premiers and dedicated filming trips both in the streets and the backcountry.
This wouldn't be possible without all the motivated FLINTA shredders out there, who stepped up to film the clips, organize the premieres, make merch and posters and more. You all make this happen, THANK YOU!

The Newschoolers awards are back, though looking slightly different as a result of social distancing. We believe that ski films are the heart and soul of the freeski scene, so this award could be argued to be the most significant of all. We considered all video projects that were posted online without a paywall in 2020 as eligible for this award, which essentially comes down to everything except for the one or two movies still being released in that way. The Newschoolers Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.
The nominees are:
Bermuda - @strictly
Magma 2 - @MAGMA.film Crew (@AlexHall , @hunterhess , Owen Dahlberg)
Keeshfile 20 - @Keesh
Nothing - @Level1 (Freedle/Parker White)
Skivas - Bug Visionaries & @colineballetbaz
Love them or hate them, competitions are a huge part of the freeski world. We watch and cover all the major events, and there are some guys out there who make the whole process more enjoyable, courtesy of unique style or interesting trick selection. We wanted to recognize the fact that even though they don’t always come out on top of the podium, their skiing is often the most inspiring to us and the core ski audience.
The nominees for Comp MVP are:
Ferdinand Dahl
Colby Stevenson
Elias Syrja
Henrik Harlaut
Mathilde Gremaud
The 2021 NS Awards are presented by Toyota & Mountain Dew.

Bucket Clips, an idea cooked up over the course of several phone calls with Rosina Friedel, returns for a second season. Supported by Newschoolers & Armada, Rosina worked to gather this exhibition of art by lesser-known female shredders and made a movie highlighting the diversity and talent in the game right now.
We are super stoked to have been able to support this project and look forward to Bucket Clips 3.0. We are changing things up a bit for next season, with some crews filming dedicated segments for the movie, but as always the movie will also be open to everyone too.

Had not seen any ski tutorials for skiing so figured i'd try make one!
Didn't have a mic and it was pretty gusty wind so some of the audio got lost in the process unfortunately.
Anyway if you like it, comment and let me know what you think and maybe i will make some more soon! :)

See Sammy Carlson adventure to the high mountain peaks of Alaska, British Columbia and Alaska to push the boundaries of what is possible deep into the mountains. This back country terrain proved to be the perfect canvas for Sammy to push the limits of skiing. Joined by his friends Vinzenz Keller, Todd Ligare, Yu Sasaki, Yoshiya “Bull” Urata the crew spent the winter of 2022/23 in some of the world's most remote locations.

Nuance is a skiing video designed to explore and showcase the small, subtle aspects that exist in the sport of skiing. After facing a difficult period due to a badly broken leg a few winters ago, Peak Performance athlete Garrett Capel decided to look deeper into skiing and focus on the elements that truly make him passionate about being a skier.
Separated into two acts, nuance highlights these elements.
In Act 1, the film showcases the power of friendship in skiing—the feeling of having all your friends in one place, generating a collective energy; the satisfaction of a high-five; the funniest things anyone’s ever said; and the sunset at the end of the day, when everyone’s spirits are high, and you can’t stop smiling. These are the moments that matter and should never be forgotten.
In Act 2, the focus shifts to the design elements of our environment: the texture of the snow after a wind event, the way the sun reflects off the snow as you carve through it, the vast scale of the mountains you play in, and all the other details we often overlook.
Starring Leif Wilson, Adam Kuch, Mark Hendrickson and Garrett Capel. Cinematography by Lucas Reid
