Alta Season Recap 2021

Last season was a bit of an anomaly. Covid restrictions somehow corralled a lot of skiers up canyon, likely due to most other activities being shut down. Add to that our less than ideal ski schedule and we ended up with a very low attendance season. This shows in the season edit compared to previous years. We didn’t get a lot of bluebird pow shots and overall lacked great footage.
Nonetheless it was a great season and Alta was our escape from the madness. Despite logging under 30 days on the lifts. Hopefully ya’ll still enjoy the edit!

Boots Over Brim - A Sweetgrass Production Featuring Amie Engerbretson

A few winters back my dad and I were showing off our dance moves at the Cowboy bar in Jackson, WY. Our footwork got fancy as they started throwing inverted dance moves. Within moments the bouncer promptly kicked them out saying “No boots over the brim!” A film concept was born that day. Boots Over Brim follows me, Amie, a professional skier and classically trained dancer, as I dip in and out of a dreamy western dance scene and ski lines in Wyoming, Nevada, and Alaska.

Breaking all the rules of a classic ski film, Boots Over Brim pairs two of my great loves with a soundtrack exclusively set to the electrifying country music of Paul Cauthen.

Skiing is an art. Full of connection, grace, touch and style. To me, skiing is a dance.

It's pretty hard not to share everything online these days, seeking instant gratification and reaction. SUGAR HIGH is a short run and gun ski movie filmed in beautiful Revelstoke, British Columbia captured and produced by Cam Keith.

We held onto these shots in order to make something that would last, that we could look back on. Often filmed with one camera, a GoPro or whatever is available. Filmed over the past 2 winters with no budget, and nothing but a passion for skiing and film making.

This is our time capsule, our yearbook of some of the greatest times of our young lives in the mountains. We weren't born in the mountains, but we are definitely thriving amoung them.

Autism: One Man's Journey - Ski Segment

I recently saw some posts going around about mental health and skiing. Because of this, I wanted to share the ski segment from my award-winning documentary film that has been in 10 film festivals. For those of you that do not know, I have been filming skiing for many years. I was diagnosed as autistic at age 23 after struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and alcoholism for quite some time. I am going on 12 years sober, and I am very grateful for the decision I made for myself to get sober. I made it through some tough times with my severe depression and now live a fulfilling life with my girlfriend and a successful film career. I want to let you know that there is no need to feel ashamed of struggling with mental health, and whenever possible, please be open with others so that you do not internalize your struggles. The more we hide it, the harder it gets. If you need someone to talk to, please feel free to reach out. I am here for people that could use the support.

This segment shows me surrounded by my passion for filmmaking. I had people follow me around filming behind-the-scenes footage to capture me filming while combining the footage with my camera angles to the music. There were interviews with Lupe Hagearty, Parker Norvell, Cassidy "Queso" Dubois, and Jaron Stadler speaking about how filming skiing helps alleviate some of my autistic traits as well as my severe depression. During this segment, it also features the skiing of Taylor Seaton, John Spriggs, Keegan Kilbride, Trent Jones, Seamus Flanagan, and the people in the interviews. If it weren't for finding my passion in filmmaking I don't think I would be where I am today. A few words,

My relationship with skiing has changed a lot over the past year. As I become more and more aware of what gives meaning to my life, the childhood dream of becoming a professional skier dissipates. As we continue to see the immense impacts of climate change caused by the ongoing mismanagement of land and traditional knowledge, I become more fulfilled by learning about ways I can change as a person and help spread this awareness to the people in my life. I am more than stoked to ski this season as I have the utmost privilege to do so, however I am conscious that being apart of the ski industry does not align with all of my values. It is our responsibility to be accountable for the impact we have on this planet. Mother Earth is here to nurture and heal us, we must reciprocate that action for the relationship to continue.
