The LCG Evo is Scott's high-end spherical lens goggle and it shows with little touches throughout. The case, the molded lens case, and the spare lens all feel 'premium' and the goggles themselves are great too.
Mine came with a photosensitive blue chrome lens (Cat 2 to Cat 4) and a spare low light 'illuminator' lens (Cat 1). The photochromic lens is great, in that it provides impressive versatility without the need to change lens. The Amplifier technology, Scott's term for filtering specific wavelengths of light to provide extra contrast helps when things get gloomy at the end of the day and the lens does go pretty dark when exposed to full sunlight (supposedly 8%VLT at the lowest). I have extremely sensitive eyes, so on the sunniest of days I do prefer something even darker, the PRIZM Black from Oakley for example. At the other end of the scale, they work in overcast conditions but in really bad vis and low light situations, they don't provide enough contrast. Skiing down at the end of the day in Saas-Fee, when the sun has set behind the mountains can feel a little 'blind'. For 95% of people these lenses will cover the vast majority of conditions they ski though, all in the one lens.
And in case you do end up in a low-light situation, these do come with the Cat 1 'Illuminator' lens, also with Amplifier tech. And it's seriously impressive. With a yellow base color and a blue chrome mirroring, they are comfortable even when a little sun is breaking through but they do an amazing job of bringing up the contrast in poor vis and I've been really impressed with these as a bad weather day choice. They are definitely marketed as the 'second lens' but I was seriously impressed by them compared to the second lenses thrown in with most goggles.
The LCG frame didn't feel quite right out of the box, and on day one I was a little disappointed because the fit felt wrong. But then I discovered (aka I actually looked at the instructions) that you can actually tweak the fit with a screwdriver. I tightened them up, lo and behold after a little trial and improvement, they felt perfect. Overall, they're comfortable, they have a good field of view and I've yet to experience any fogging issues. The lenses seem relatively scratch-resistant too, and on both those latter counts, they are certainly an improvement on the Oakley's I was riding previously.
As a general rule, I prefer a cylindrical lens style goggle but there are definitely advantages to the spherical style. If that's your preference, the LCG Evo is certainly up there with the best of 'em. I find myself reaching for them more and more these days! -
