True Detective Predictions

So I got this idea from barstool/ the other thread. Lets have a competition and see who can best guess how this great show will end. I will provide cash money/a prize for the person who comes closest to getting everything right.

Rules:

All theories posted in this thread can be updated and revised until Sat. night. Just quote your theory when updating or revising.

To win you must hit two basic criteria; guess the proper murderer/murders, and you must identify who or what is the yellow king. After that it comes down to who was most specifically accurate.


Thats it so far, interested to see everyones theories! Will update rules and such if you guys have any ideas.

Not sure if you're going to get much - especially away from the main thread that hasn't generated much interest but here is my theory:


I don't believe the Yellow King is a specific person. It's more of an idea that represents these terrible acts and the killing cult itself, not a singular entity. I doubt the show will end with some big spectacle of some mischievous dude sitting on some thrown with like big buck antlers acting like the head honcho or something. The King in Yellow is about a play - The Yellow King in True Detectives is about the story they we are all watching

It's pretty obvious that lawnmower man (errol childress) is a henchman/gopher for the fucked up tuttle/childress family and he has either been abducting/killing/burying most of the children and women or some combination of the above. Not powerful enough to be calling shots, but instead following orders from his family that has "been around a long time".

Carcosa will be the hell hole that they find in ep 8 with all the bones and shit - where the ritualistic killings take place like the one we saw on VHS where they did shit to that littler girl

I'm torn as to how the series will end. On one hand I believe all of the time is a circle symbolism they have alluded to will mean Cohle/Marty will find a few of the guilty members but not enough to break the cycle. They will obviously nab lawnmower man but maybe they can't get deep enough into the well protected society to bring it down. His (Errol's) family has been in the area in a long time, they are like a deep rooted cancer that will never leave. Supported by his statement about how his family has been there a long time and his circular mowing of the lawn. Time is a flat circle, he's been there before and he'll e there again. The cycle will continue and the cult will show its head in another decade or however long. It was very fitting that the detectives curse (the answer is right under your nose) happened to Cohle/marty when they met lawnmower man but didn't look into the school, and in last nights episode the black detectives have the killer right in front of them maintaining the cemetery that holds the bodies of the missing people

On the other hand maybe Cohle finally breaks the cycle. He alluded to wanting to break the cycle in last nights episode and it would be a fitting end that would make fans happy - to give their bad boy hero a fitting ending - maybe in a sacrificial way like all the allusions to christ that have followed cohle

Like to voice their ideas. I just want to consolidate all the theories into one thread without all the other bs. Plus this show is set up perfectly for the viewer to try and solve.

So my current theory that may be subject to change:

Main Murderer: Erroll Childress

Yellow King: Gov. Tuttle


At this point I still believe the Yellow King is a sole person. A King is a person of power and the Gov. has the most of it. I believe that there are in fact "5 horsemen" with 3 identified. Gov. Tuttle, Rev. Tuttle, and Sheriff Ted Childress.

The reason I believe there are five involved are such: Audreys dolls in 95' consisted of five clothes men around one naked barbie, Rustin makes 5 "people" out of the lone star cans, there is a picture of 5 men on horses and one girl in Dora Langes' (the girl from episode 1 that was murdered)mothers house, and finally there are five men and a girl in the video that Rust and Marty watch that was stolen from the Rev. (implicating him and making him a horseman).

Ted Childress (former sheriff)I also believe is the father of Erroll, and as the black lady said in ep. 7, gave Erroll his scars on his chin "[of the scars on his chin]Oh he got those from his father". He is also the sheriff that dismissed the Marie Fontano case (Rust saw it as "Made an Error" in the computer).

Erroll is the "spagetti monster" and is responsible for the displaying of, if not the murders themselves. It can also be noted that at the end of ep. 7 he was mowing the lawn in not just a circular fashion, but a spiral rotating inwards, just like the tattoos found on the victims.

Thats what I have so far but it's subject to change I'm sure as I rewatch the series.

Fucking Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, with the dude who directed all 18 of the Fast and Furious movies?

I'm really trying to be optimistic here, but it is really fucking hard. This sucks.

WHy is Vince Vaughn getting hated on? He could nail this as long as they let him be funny too. Its not like McConahaugh has been in a lot of good movies hes a good actor but hes only really been in garbage chick flicks.

Thats what I mean I think Farrell will suck or be average but Vaughn will rip it and save the show.

Hope its set somewhere else.

Seriously? I felt the same way about McConaughey but his performance as an actor in this show was unparalleled. You think that Vince Vaughn has the acting capacity to get on that level? Especially with the guy who directed Fast and the Furious in the drivers seat? Shits fucked, my friend.

I think Vaughn and Farrell will be fine. Nic Pizzolatto knows what he's doing. You wouldn't think McConaughey would be capable of such dark material but he pulled it off stunningly. I have plenty of faith this will be good...

Pizzolatto won’t be directing season 2, Justin Lin will and I hate all of his cheesy fast and furious movies. Vaughn is a pretty mediocre actor but we will see.

The director doesn't do everything my dude, most very popular shows ie breaking bad have different directors for different episodes. What is key is the writing and for true detective it is phenomenal. I think Collin and Vince will kill it.

Well, season one was a slow-burner with Nick and Cary Fukunaga co-directing. I can see why Nick would pick Fukunaga to co-direct. If you look up and watch the films he directed you can get a sense of his storytelling abilities and his dark visual style, which was great for season one.

I’m just not sure why Nick would pick Justin Lin to direct the first two episodes. His resume consists of only subpar action movies like fast and furious and that tells me little about his substance in terms of moviemaking and his ability to sell a story.

I hear ya, and I am hopeful, but I'm just very skeptical since McConaughey and Harrelson were unfuckingreal. The entire vibe that that show gave off, on top of the incredible acting and storyline, was crazy. They didn't need any ridiculous, over the top, try-too-hard-for-a-twist plots...They just made a straight up, well told, thriller story. I dunno, I'm just fuckin obsessed with it. I still watch episodes when I'm bored.
