So... I stumbled on this on NBC's website - Slopestyle Training Day photos.

First photo made me want to cry. Whomever their photographer is has clearly NEVER shot park skiing or snowboarding before.

I really hope some real ski/snowboard photographers are shooting the Olympics (slopestyle ski and snowboard events) to do this sport justice, because as of now based on those photos it looks like it's one jump taken from one crappy angle by a photographer in a lawn chair. The athletes do a better job with their iphones on instagram than this Getty Photographer did with probably $30,000 in equipment, and god only knows how much he made on selling these images.

Brutal. Especially that first title image - rolling down the windows much? Yikes.

that might be the one decent shot out of the bunch, the rest not so much...

How much of you liking it is because it is dollo though because of your personal bias? Had it been a random chick would you still feel the same?

It's too bad the athletes can't sell their iphone images, Keri Herman did a way better job with her camera phone shot of Dollo than this photographer.

The news (here in Australia) just ran a big story about the course being modified because the snowboarders are complaining about it. In the story there was a whole lot of footage of the athletes testing the course. Couldn't tell which skier it was but one of them did a cork 3 on every jump in a row. So much air time!

He is probably an amazing photographer - don't get me wrong. But just because you are a great tennis/swimming/portrait photographer doesn't mean you will be a great skiing photographer. However, if you do your research and actually check out the industry standards/what angles are used in the respective sport's top outlets and content providers, ESPN, Freeskier, heck even comp coverage on here (ie: grabbed photos are preferred over first hit guinea-pig rolling down the window shots) he could have done a lot better.

I guess I'm just bummed, it's the Olympics. Couldn't he have at least changed up the angle at least once or done his homework? This is the debut of a new sport, ideally it should be showcased the way the sport (athletes, fans, industry) have come to expect it, enjoy it and get stoked off of it. I doubt the respective athletes are stoked on those shots being run on NBC's Olympic website, a good photographer wants to showcase the best of the athlete's ability (and in skiing's case, grabbed photos at maximum height, with feature perspective).

Oh well... at least NBC had photos, and Australia had video. Our own coverage in Canada (CBC) had neither photos nor video from training, and it's hard to get through to other country's media coverage due to exclusive content rights and agreements.

I just want to watch these athletes throw down.. like everyone else. Fingers crossed it gets better!

I understand your frustration here, but we have to give up caring at some point. Worrying too much about the image of freeskiing to the public is a waste of time, everyone just needs to keep doing them and stop worrying about what a bunch of idiots think about skiing.

So I should just give up caring that Canada doesn't have any coverage? I'm not even a park skier but I was stoked to watch this sport make it's debut, I got to follow Sarah around at summer camp and cover her teaching young girls, many of whom grew into pros, prior to this event making it into the Olympics. It's a pretty amazing that the sport has come this far, I've got a few friends over there at their first games, so yes, I'm sorry for caring that yes, it's only training, but I would love to watch these athletes see their dreams realized after so much hard work, blood sweat and tears. Sorry for expecting a higher callibre of coverage (or any coverage). It would be nice to have some actual ski/snowboard photographers capturing images from this inaugural event, or in my case, have my own Olympic media in Canada cover it.

Yeah but its also hard to expect some to push out content for a very small market like us, it sucks but its true.

There will be live coverage and televised coverage of all of the skiing contests. I imagine we will see more from athletes but I'm not sure whats "chyll" to put online when it comes to photos/videos due to TV contacts and rights.

My friend also reminded me that photography access is extremely limited, and it may actually be the case that that location is the only spot/angle accredited media are allowed to shoot photos from, which would suck. There are a ton of features on that course and that particular angle isn't really that flattering. Something tells me that we are going to see the best content from the athletes themselves, depending on #rule40 and exclusive games sponsor complications.

Honestly can't believe people are complaining about those jumps... Are they fucking terrifying and huge? Yes. But professional skiers/boarders should have no problem hitting them and it should be expected for the olympics.

I really hope they don't change them that much because a few people are unhappy, they looked pretty damn good. Def looks like some JOI shit.

No it was clearly X- games fault. You'd have to be blind to think that was accident. The x-games are held in AMERICA, you think America cares about canadian athletes? Same with Russia and torstein. Are we really going to let our favorite athletes get thrown into the lions den and eaten alive so that the countries in power can take home the golds and parade the rest of the athletes around like pawns?

So as far as those nbc photos go, the main problem is the angle and lack of context. They are juat pictures of people on the air. You can barely see the jump or the ground. It looks like they are the action shots that are done at the bottom of your local mountain. I had the same thing happen with my dad, who is a professional photographer. When he took some shots of a comp i was in, all of them were zoomed too far in and didnt ahow the context well. That said, the photos were still good and better than those nbc photos.

sry for db post needed to post this.

I did some measuring with highspeed camera and calculated some airtimes, here's the results.

Henriks nosebutter triple from 2013 had airtime of 2.43 seconds, the JOI from last year had airtime of 2.68 seconds, and the sochi jump had 2.69 secs. These measurements might be wrong a few 0.01 secs but not much.

So basicly the last jump is as big as JOI.
And that hucked as fuck quad from that waterramp somewhere here in ns had airtime of 2.83s, so i can almost bet no quads will (can't) be thrown.

lol of course no one is gonna go for a quad dude. its a 2 run final, there is no room to fuck around, especially now that judges seem to count executation as 80-90% of the score. Personally dont even expect 2 dubs in a row

I feel like most of the people complaining are people who only competed in the FIS events with small ass jumps. The kind of people who are essentially qualifying through loopholes because they saw an opportunity to shred at the olympics. Go to Breck, Keystone, Mammoth or Whistler and I am sure you could find some guys who would be down to send these jumps.

I think he's referring to the FIS competitions internationally. The US Grand Prix events were to decide who would make the American team. The Austrian team for example, didn't have to qualify in Park City to get a spot on their team.
