At this point I don't even know anymore. Part of me says "big moment for skiing, world stage... blah blah..." big part of me says "Man do I ever not give a flying rats fucking ass about this shit."

I'm just kinda pissed that the world is probably gonna see freeskiing for the first time and call it a "jackass sport" or whatever and have all these people have no idea about the culture behind the sport which I dedicate so much of my life to. But who cares what they think, they dont even fuckin know.

ill probably record it and watch it when I am bored but I would much rather sit down on NS and watch edits. I love goofy edits that just get me pumped to go mess around on the slopes. For me comp skiing is kinda disappointing  cuz only three skiers get to podium and some guys who are amazing athletes with tremendous work ethics barely get any love. I feel like its not at skiings core element to be judged with set rules and regulations.

im excited as hell. i've never watched the olympics and seriously cheered for anything or anyone, i never gave a shit, i mean go USA but... who cares about most of these sports.

but now... I will be at a bar screaming for walnutz or dollo or torin, etc. and it will be amazing, no matter what.

Personally I have mixed feelings. It is a great accomplishment for freeskiing, yet I still have a dark feeling that somehow the judging system will be fucked up...

I will watch and make pretentious comments to my friends about how lame slopestyle in the olympics is. I am not looking forward to the fall out of what will happen.

I.E.
Freeskiers becoming household names with Subway commercials, tons of gapers in the park with twins, etc

Everyone's taking about how the public will react and there will be mad gapers everywhere but I wonder, does the AVERAGE AMERICAN give a shit either?

I mean, if curling hadn't been in the Olympics, and was for the first time this year, I'd be like "Curling. Cool. USA! Don't know how it works. But don't really give a shit." I don't think people are gonna watch and think "holy fuck I am immediately going to google a forum for this fascinating sport and join the culture"

I think the Olympics are a great thing for skiing. More money for those who are trying to make a living off it. It could potentially increase the size of the talent pool for skiing which would be cool to watch. Additionally, I think it will give some current older comp skiers a reason to go back to filming more. Once they do their Olympics they will probably feel like they can back off a little. Its four years til the next one and its unlikely, given the near necessity of youth in this sport, that someone would be as competitive for the following Olympics. While core skiers may not place emphasis on Olympics results I'm pretty sure sponsors ( i.e. Jiff and Tide) will which will turn the Olympics into the highest priority event of slopestyle or pipe skiing.

Bottom line: I predict we will see some older pro slopestyle skiers and, to a lesser degree pipe skiers, filming more and I think that is fucking great for this newschool shit.

2. I came to the same conclusion... but then I've been watching everything happening recently and I'm really fucking over it. All the rules, all the politics, all the hype... it just doesn't resonate with me.

So I'm personally completely flip-flopping and saying I don't give a shit.

Freeskiing is now hipsters?

5 years ago we would have all paid money to give someone in our community a chance at an Olympic medal, and now that it's here we all want to bitch and play it down because (in standard NS fashion):

-XXXXX should go be XXXXX deserves it
-XXXXX sucks and sold out and has no style
-XXXXX can do zero spins and that's totes the best style and so technical and didn't go

Can't we ever just enjoy something and realize we're getting what we've asked for? Dubs, huge spins, Olympics, more stock in Jiberish lines (lol), more people on skis, etc. This site has countless threads dedicated to hoping this stuff would come true, but once it did everyone talks about how much they hate it.

We are hipsters. Or simply cynical douches.

Honestly, this is pretty much it.

I pick the ski movies I buy largely based on the skiers that I want to watch ski - and by "watch ski", I mean skiers that I've watched for a while and I'm desperately hoping will put down an incredible segment. The Olympics won't be much different. Once the lineup is released, I'll either be SUPER interested or not interested at all. Right now, with only a couple of preliminary ranking boards, it's not worth caring about yet.

If Tom Wallisch was having a comp season like he did a couple years ago, I would be really damn excited for the Olympics. Or if Eric Pollard was having a great comp season, or Andreas Hatveit, or Torin Yater Wallace, or Tanner Hall, or TJ Schiller, or Sammy Carlson, or Bene Mayr, or Henrik Harlaut or any of the skiers I truly enjoy watching.

On top of that, the Olympics are a celebrated national pride sort of thing, so even though I would love for Henrik to win slopestyle with a mind-blowing run, I'll still be torn between cheering for him and some random American that I don't REALLY care about.

Guess I'll figure out if I care when the final rider list shows up.

Is there a real justification for development of land barely touched or cared about by the hands of the IOC and organisational builds? The lifts built are amazing, but weren't even connected to the build, and now a town shut off for over 2 years has experienced the real implications of the Olympics held in an unsustainable country. Private riding but only because everything is shut thanks to the Sochi build, basically a town shutting down an incredible lift system on an incredible mountain range. The best inbounds and lift accessible terrain on this planet may never have riders fully explore and shred this newfound powder mecca thanks to the destruction of the Olympic machine combined with a corrupt country.
I don't know but I read more and more from Onboard, Whitelines, Powder and here of the growing catastrophe the Olympics in Sochi is and will be.

When I will be able to watch it on Dutch television I will watch and enjoy it.. No more or no less fucks will be given..

All the #roadtosochi post etc is just blown up because its new.. Next year all will be different.
It will be interesting to see who will keep focussing on the Olympics. I think halfpipe will stay and will become aerials 2.0 and slopestyle will disappear in the next few years because of style bitching and riders will lose interest.

I disagree, I think they are gonna be blown away, all they know of skiing is racing, they have only seen moves like this 2 feet off the ice. Plus you will have skiers showing up snowboarders in halfpipe.

The periphery stuff (Bob Costas, Target, athlete puff pieces, etc.) I do not give a fuck about. All that shit is dumb and completely eye roll worthy. But I am excited to see the freeski events in primetime on a major TV network. When these events are on I'm going to put all my gripes about the other bullshit aside and enjoy the show. Plus as a fan you get to root for the guys/girls you want to win. Or you can just root for everyone to do zero-spins.

Let's be honest, we are all bitching about it now but when the events are televised we are all going to watch it.

I think that any rational human being would think that at least a few times sitting through all the hooplah and bullshit ceremonies. THAT part of the Olympics is fucking lame and I hate it. The part that saves it though is what we all love anyways- The best of the best at their prime shooting it out against each other while the world watches.

It's the highest-pressure event this sport sees, really. There's a lot at stake even if the Olympics is kind of bullshit and people we love to watch are about to have some huge opportunities.

I'm excited, since I really don't think anything bad will come out of this. If you prefer watching edits it''s not like that will be any more difficult after the Olympics than it has been this far. If you enjoy watching competitions then woopie-doo!
My main concern is that judging might be fucked up. If they get the same judges as for every other big competition then it will be all good.
The Olympics are traditionally the most prestigious sporting event in existence, and I'm stoked to see what my favourite skiers will do to get that gold.
X-games will still be THE competition to win, so I'm not that worried tbh.

I'm actually excited for them in the olympics. Maybe it's because I'm old enough to remember when snowboarding was brand new to the olympics as well, and how excited I was because I was a snowboarder at the time.

Where I differ from a lot of NS though, is me NOT being excited to see someone like Harlaut being the face of park skiing. I don't want that to be the image that people see when I tell them I like to ski park. I'd much rather have Tom, Bobby, or Gus be the type of people think of when they think of park skiers.

I don't think you can just say that everyone is not about it - this has always been a debate that is very polarized. That is the point of this thread, I want to hear what you think now that we've really seen it all happening.

What I've been seeing is an extremely unprepared and rushed qualification process, sponsors pulling massive dollars out of athletes, media and events to dump it into the Olympic machine, a corrupt government spending ungodly amounts of money and taking advantage of their people and a myriad of insanity. I've seen some corporate dollars that wouldn't usually be there flow into a few parts of the sport for sure, and there is a massive uptick in the number of people that are paying attention.

However in the end for me personally... I'm really struggling to be particularly excited about this. I certainly hope that it turns a new wave of skiers onto the sport - and perhaps in the end I'll be proven wrong and the Olympics will do this in a way that the X-games never could.

I invite more opinions on how awesome the Olympics are and why you think that.
