I never thought I would do this but here we go. I am 5'11, 166 pounds, and I spend most of my time in the park. What size should I get? Coming from snowboarding, I'm looking for something perfectly symmetrical. I wear size9.5 shoes. What binding? If any of you have what I'm looking for let me know. I'll willing to trade my setup, skate banana with union force and salomon boots.
For boots go to a bootfitter.
What are you looking for in a ski? Soft? Stiff? Durability? Price? Rocker? Camber?
Bindings, stay away from marker, look pivots/rossignol fks (same binding) and salomon STH driver series are pretty good.
Also read through all of the stickies in GT. look through some of the threads on what skis and stuff
If you arent sure whether you will like skiing or not you could demo some twin tips and rent boots. The boots and bindings will suck, but you will atleadt get a feel for skiing.
Get something around 170. Probably no shorter. Youre probably gonna suck so i wouldnt worry too much about some of the technical aspects of skis. Get something cheap in case you dont like it.
skis can have both camber underfoot and rocker in the tips/tails
If youre going to spend $500 on anything it should be boots. skis really dont make much of a difference, especially for a first timer. Good skis wont make a bad skier good. Bad skis wont make a good skier bad.
This is true, however, a nice fitting boot might not always run that much. I found a pair that fit my foot on clearance for $150.
Sure, a bootfitter will help, but if you at least know the last width of your foot, get the proper flex, and don't get a boot 2 sizes too big like 90% of new skiers do, you should be off to a better start than most people.
Do not get 181, you are a beginner so a shorter ski will be more beneficial, especially for park. I say 176 because they ski short. If you get a camber ski, then go around 170.
THIS! But at the same time, once youve got the best boots that fit you, it doesnt hurt to get nice skis. If you really get into it youll just end up replacing bad skis in a season or two. But dont forget the bindings. I got pivots few seasons back and theyve lasted longer then my skis...
you dont need a $500 dollar ski to learn on go to a local ski swap or sale and find some stuff for cheap, maybe spend a bit more on boots but who knows you may hate it and then you would have wasted $1000. and when youre learning the equipment doesnt matter
nope nope nope nope. Go with 181's. I 5'7 and i ride 176 jmos wich are ideal length. If your gonna get expensive skis make em last. The rocker is gonna chop 5-10cm of edge off of each end.
I did same thing as op last year and now i love skiing i would recomend k2 press mine are great only thing is they became beat up very quick probably because i was a beginner
Me and my freind (who snowboards) swapped one day and he was not all that bad at skiing. I got the hang of snowboarding as well. The skills defiantly pass from one to the other
