I don't like the age claim

When I see an edit, I absolutely hate it when they put in the claim on the age.

*Charlie Ingalls you made me think of this, but its not just you

My reasoning is that I think your skiing should stand up, regardless of age. You're either dope or your not, and age points are bullshit.

I kind of think its almost an insult to be like "Yo that kid is fucking sick for 13 years old."

So does he suck then? If he's sick, he's sick - end of story. If he has to be only sick for 13... then there is still maturing to do.

I dunno... maybe off base but I just was really compelled to say something.

*Further disclaimer - Charlie - I thought your edit was sweet. You didn't need to claim on being a certain age. Stand for your skills.

i would have to agree. ive seen so many edits claiming "oh check me out I'm 13" but really it doesnt matter its only a number. i dont know where im going but i agree with malcolm.

what if it's an age claim on the other side of the spectrum? doing double corks at 50 would be a pretty sick claim.

completely agree with you, same thing goes when people say '' I've only been skiing park for 2 years''. it's like giving an excuse to say why you're not good...

i agree with this, all the age claim is saying is that you have POTENTIAL to be sick when you get older based on how good you are in the video and at what age. plus a bunch of those young kids can shred anyway its not necessary.

and i also agree the old age claim is perfectly reasonable. everybody wants to know about that

This has always bothered me. Especially when it's in a movie and not just an edit. That was literally the only thing I didn't like about Teddy Bear Crisis.

nah if a kid is sick at 13 he's sick for his age. and when you say that, you are sort of assuming he will be sick when he's 17. but 'sick' for 13 is obviously not as 'sick as for 17 because theyre not as big/strong basically not physically mature

Age claim, claiming all the shots were 11/12, claiming you lost some shots, etc. I dont mind claims aslong as they're true. Especially not the age, if you 13 and shred i appreciate it more then if i cant tell the age and i dont have a frame of reference.

My main point is that you should let your skiing speak for itself. If someone is like "Holy fuck that dude is rad..." and then someone else says "Yeah... and he's 11 / 50"

That is Awesome.

However, when you don't just judge the skiing, when you are given the age up front you judge the skiing based on age. I think that to be really open minded about skiers, we should judge people's skiing totally irrelevant of age/sex/location/gender

when i see some 5' 2" kid with 148 skis do a swap on a down rail, i'm pretty impressed. but it does bug me a little when people point stuff like that out.

if a 5 yo kid hit a medium sized jump and did a 360 wouldnt you say it was sick? but if i did it you'd be all like 'whatever'.

or what about when Josh Dueck did that sit-ski backflip? that was sick but i know there are a ton of kids on here who can do them w/o it being nearly as sick.

i think we need to generate some strict guidelines on the definition of 'sick' and imo age/size/disability/gender/peoplewholikeNickelback/peoplewithodorproblems/race should affect the score

Well how about this though - would you need to claim on the 'sit ski backflip' - or would you simply be able to allow the video to speak for itself?

In the case of a sit ski backflip... you could get the sick factor without begging for the points by claiming on it in the title.

Same goes for the 5 yo kid. If I simply watched the 360, I'd say "Damn... that kid is SMALL - and that was a SICK 360 - how old is he?"

I'd even probably ask that question to those who werethere/postedit/linkedtoit/whatever - and the fact that it wasn't claimed on from the beginning would make it that much more badass.

My only issue with the claim on some reason why your trick wasn't as good as someone else's, is that you're pre-pigeonholing yourself to not being as good as everyone else.

Yes, it has gotten a bit played out. And yes the skiing should speak for itself. But seeing someone double cork at say 13-15 years old is a testament to the progression of our sport. I ll give you an example. This is a video of Braedon Wheeler. The skiing is great, but at the same time nothing special. Knowing that he is age 12/13 while filming this makes it waay more impressive. The fact is: People love child prodigies. It makes them excited for the future of progression and skiing legends. We should embrace and encourage the young athletes, but this community just seems to hate on them (ex. Bobby, Goepper, and other guys still developing their style).

I got into the biggest shitstorm on facebook over this very topic. It got quite heated. But it appears my comments got deleted. Idk why someone always has to claim age to be proclaimed a "good" skier. Everyone has the potential to be great in their own way, regardless of age.

Heres the video that caused the gongshow. (the battle somehow went much farther into USA vs Canada geopolitics, in which I was made fun for living in "East Jesus, Alberta" (otherwise known as Edmonton, a city of over a million and gateway to the oil sands), while my perpetrator was from a highschool with 100 students. hahahaha I really want to find that FB comment thread

Ahaha yessss, have to getsomone I know into this thread. Pretty sure he and a few other guys from the crew lost a contest to a small kid at a local big air open to everyone. While they were hucking themselves and going big a little guy who was only 3'ing or something beat them out. Lame stuff...
