I know its definitely doable. I used to summit via bootpacking with skis over one shoulder and a tripod over the other. It was miserable but after a while it wasn't so bad once I quit being such a baby.
Still, I like travelling light if I can help it. The GH2 nicely compensates for my behemoth Sachtler head anyway.

Do it! Red one is pretty big and heavy, slow to start up, but damn, 30fps at 4k, up to 60 at 3k and 120fps at 2k. 13 stops DR. FS700 is lighter, and has 240fps, but at 8 bit AVCHD, soft picture in my opinion. My scarlet is on its way now :)

Soft picture compared to what? The fs100 is the sharpest image ive seen out of anything < $5000

compared to RED. FS100 has a nice image for that type of camera/price range for sure.

Oh well, i'd sure hope the camera that costs(used to cost) 10 times more with 4x the resolution would be sharper ;-)

Fs100 kit used to be say 10 grand with lenses power and what not? Scarlet kit is 15-20k....so 2 times more for 5x the resolution... Math doesn't add up to me....

I was talking about bodies and the old prices and I wasn't really counting 5k res.
And you can run an fs100 for $7k obviously excluding tripod. Just saying, dunno where you got 10k math doesn't add up to me... ;-)

I was looking at old fs100 . I own a kit I put 10k into I rented out permanently.... My scarlet kit was 20k.
Actual 4k is close to 5x more info... Not 4k hd. 5k actually contains 55-60% More info and pixels on a 5k sized sensor.

cine 4k or tv 4k?
I dunno what was in your kit but i have the tokina 11-16 tamron 17-50 and sony 18-200 with one big batt one small batt, 32gb 16gb cards and a mic with deadcat. Total, thats about $6800 total. Anything more than that is "extra" IMO.

Mine wasn't set up for skiing.
It included rails, various lens adapters, matte box, 4x4 nd's, etc...
It was a split investment for full time cine projects a buddy of mine does. I helped with the investment and pick up a rental rate while my buddy gets the operator rate.
Not how I'd set up a camera normally but it was a different situation.
I wrote the check it was very close to 10k.
My scarlet set up is much more modest in contrast.

Wait the fuck?
Out of the work I've seen people post online I see almost no difference between red and fs700's. red owners also have the tendency to get way too hard for their equipment and showcase their gear in videos rather than their content (whether it be skiing or a story line). Literally the biggest turn off in regards to red is how they just jack off to the fact that they own a red.
T2i's ftw

Well dude, when resolution is limited to 1080p/2k online, yeah of course you wont be able to tell the difference...

I rarely post in any thread on RU.... Unless I have a question, am helping, or it is awesome(aka price drop)
I for one hate REDs attitude but to deny that there isn't good info on RU is ignorant...as is judging the whole community or those that own one. I worked extremely hard for mine. I've met a lot of great people on there that are friends and have made an impact on my life... People I've met on NS still live with there parents and are trying to re live the glory days generally. I'm positive there are great people on here but when it comes to a professional career and actual acquaintances NS hasn't done shit.
RU has put me in contact with professionals I've learned from, work with and grow with. It has it's rotten eggs, but that can be said for any online community. RED is my tool for my work...I use other gear and cameras as well. Some of you should try a RED or ask Zac M what it's like. I wouldn't trade my Scarlet for anything but an Epic. But its what I like.
To each there own I guess.

You mean compressing 12-bit 4K RAW to the web-palatable h.264 hides the advantages of using a camera designed for major cinema? Tell me more...

Lol. Use a T2i to shoot a feature film, let me know how it goes.

i mean, it's not like they used a 7D to shoot some parts of Black Swan or anything...

this, you'd be surprised how much dslrs get used for features

That's because it was literally Libatique holding a bare bones DSLR with someone else holding a microLED in order to avoid permits. Even then, the 7D shots really stuck out from the rest of the film in terms of IQ.
I mean, you can make a good movie with an iPhone. Just because a DSLR was used in a major film doesn't mean it's a good camera, it just means it's a camera.

nah I wasn't saying that at all or making any claim about the quality of the T2i. I'm well aware of how they used the 7D and why, it's just that the post I quoted seemed to be suggesting that he wasn't aware that DSLRs can be and are used for feature films if the situation calls for it, and that you wouldn't be fucked if you tried to use one for that purpose. I would way rather watch a well-lit feature film shot on a T2i than a poorly-lit film shot in 4K on a RED, especially considering how much RED content we see that IS poorly-lit due to the reliance on the RAW files.

Yeah, I was basically elaborating on your point.
These camera pissing contests are dumb. RED cameras just make it easier to create a pleasing image, but give it to a skateboarder (huehuhuehuh) and it will look like crap. Give a "cheap" 16mm camera to an extremely talented DP and you'll get masterpieces like Requiem for a Dream.

Ah yeah, I wasn't exactly sure how to reply since the first part sounded like it was contradicting what I said but the second part was supporting it.

The bit depth of 4K RAW, is it 12 bpp or bpc? Because if it's 12 bpc then all I can say is HOLY FUCK.

Yeah I don't work in the narrative film-making business or anything. Yeah T2i's, 7D's, and 5D's are used in features, but they're not being used as "A-Camera". They're specialized for particular scenario's where a larger camera is not applicable or practical. It is a nightmare to use a DSLR for an entire Feature Film. I work as an AC and what DSLR's lack are SDI-outs. To run an output to an external monitor for your AC, and then loop a pass-through out to your Director's monitor is a mess and impractical.

Can somebody answer this? Because both 12 bpc and bpp seem incredbile (in a different way...)
