So it´s about time to get my first car and cant decide what i´m going to buy. I have 2 options either vw golf gti mk4 or audi a3 8l with 1.8 turbo engine, both in manuals. They are in same price range so i need your personal opinions about the cars

is the 1.8 a turbo'd version or the non-turbo.


Either way, they are essentially the same car. drive both and get whichever one has the better dal at the time.

i'd go with the vw. they are both expensive to maintain and repair but vw will be cheaper than audi.


on a side note, why is it that the only brands NS likes are subaru, audi, and vw? I can understand subaru as the all wheel drive is essential for getting to the mountain, but audis and especially vw are way overrated IMHO

I had a 2001 VW Jetta 1.8t. bought with 200,000km (124274mi) for $5700 and drove it for 5 years and sold i it for $2700 with 318,000km(197596mi). I enjoyed the car, performed well and was great on fuel. Little bit pricey to repair but, lasted a long time and repairs were minimal even for the high mileage. One thing I recommend, is making sure the timing belt was done before you buy...or use it as a negotiating tool with the price....the cost for my timing belt was around $650.00

If the timing belt goes on those 1.8t engines, your engine is done....hope your vw or audi treats you well

I bought my vw jetta III GL, and two weeks later the reverse went out

I currently only park in pull through spots, and at the gas station the other day I literally put my foot out the door and pushed back.

Check it all out first, and make sure you're prepared to pay for the repairs, because they're fucking expensive (therefore, why I haven't fixed the reverse)

well thats not to say they arent good cars, i was mostly basing that off of maitenence and cost of repairs. they are both sightly more difficult to work on than more economical cars but i guess my opinion is subjective because im poor.

Not hating on you, but my parents bought me a car because I didnt go away for college, and they use it as well ('11 Sonata) , don't assume that every teenager out there is a bad driver that drives recklessly. I wouldnt say "no teenager should get a new car for their first one", maybe "most teens....."

I'm 23, my parents have bought me two brand new cars since I turned 16, I share an STI with my brother, and also co-own 2 classic muscle cars with my brother and dad. I've never been in an accident, nor has my brother. Your argument is ridiculously invalid. Oh, my sister has also been bought two cars, and she's never been in an accident either. Maybe my family just knows how to drive?

/semidrunkclaim I don't give a fuck. People that use this argument are just jealous of the kids who got nice cars when they were younger.

You guys don't know me...actually own a 1988 Subaru DL station wagon with 212k miles. Still runs, just traded it out for my new car because, face it, I needed a new one.


Most any product Subaru makes will stay on the road for 20+ years, given the road of it's life. It'll be fine, they'll all be fine.

It was the shit, dude. 4x4, perfect ski wagon, can go anywhere. The only problem with the old Subi's is that they burn a shit load of oil..you gotta watch out for that shit. I didn't buy it for cheap, it was given to me by my parents as they got it for themselves as a wedding gift. I got it back in Feb 2006 from them, I drove it from Salmon, ID to George, WA 3 summers in a row and had to drive it from Salmon to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho every holiday during the fall/winter of 2009 for when I was a freshman in college. You're so far off, man. I still do enjoy my 80's shitwagon, but I upgraded slightly.

It has the second most forested land by square foot/state ratio, next to Alaska.. You obviously really don't know shit about fuck about skiing the back country.

I've actually been to a shit load of Michigan.

Traverse City was alright, Detroit is fun but ghetto as fuck in MOST areas. I practically lived in Okemos for two months in 2011 so yeah, I haven't been to Michigan at all...

stock 1.8 turbos have a 0-60 of roughly 7.0-7.5 if you can drive somewhat decently. there really not thaaat fast. and plus, there front wheel drive so its not like you can drift in them unless you rip the e brake like a rere. OP, if i were you id go with the gti, unless you like having more doors and a little more room.

the a3 and the gti have the same guts in different bodies. (assuming the a3 does not have quatro, which im pretty sure the 1.8 a3's dont.)

So your claim is because a car is on the road at 212,000mi it's the best car out there, but it burned oil like no ones business?????

I'm confused? how is this Subaru better then say my families old Audi 5000 which we sold working perfectly, (no burning oil or anything) with 340,000 miles on the engine and chasis?

or how is this that much better then my old A4 which I totaled unfortunately due to my own stupidity, when she had but 210,000 miles on the motor and chasis and still running perfectly?

Or what about the Saab a few years back that just rolled over 1,000,000 documented miles?



My point: all cars can last forever, get good millage, and be great, It's about maintenance and any person with half a brain should be able to understand that. Just because you ski doesn't mean you have to drive a Subaru. I dislike people like you that seem to be so controlled by Subaru's marketing efforts that you can not see value in any other Vehicle. At the same time, cudos to Subaru for getting another one in the net of, I will only buy Subaru's and everything else on the road must die.

I digress but I had the unfortunate pleasure of driving a new Impreza for a bit the other day and the list of things I disliked about that experience was much greater then the list of things I did. But i can still see value in it as a vehicle that 75% of the mindless pointA-pointB drivers out there will enjoy to the fullest.
