Man pretty sure you can get corrective eye surgery nowadays for flying. Look into that some man totally worth it if you can afford it.

Also totally forgot about you up there Canterbury. Twin otters eh? We had one at the airport the other day, awesome stuff.

Also gonna be getting flying here soon, that has been my plan the past few afternoons but we have had like 20 kt winds and It's been awhile and I've only logged like 50 hours. So to get my and your stoke up, here's some more awesome videos.

I love the cap 232 and here's one of the first videos that turned up on YouTube, very sick airplane, guy looks like he has nice precise flying with his point rolls and hammerhead stalls. I fucking love the inside view of the knife edge spin he does at 0:34

Answering the OP if I could have any airplane, probably be a sukhoi 26 or a yak 54. DEM RADIALS are just soooo sexy. And from what I know, these beasts may look huge, but their wingspans (su-26's span is 25 feet, yak-54's span is 26 feet) are very comparable to other aerobatic planes such as an extra 300 (24 foot span)

Anyone here fly aerobatics? If you do I'm mega jelly, shits so awesome. My first aerobatic ride was in a harman rocket which is a modified RV-4 that has modified structure to withstand G-Loading. Was such an awesome flight. For now I'm stuck flying pint sized aerobatics (I fly R/C planes when I'm not skiing or flying) which is pretty awesome, but doesnt even come close to the real deal.

^Man, those cap 232's look awesome. I've spent 1 hr dual in an RV4 and that was a blast! I'll hopefully be flying soon though I've got some pics from training on the Twin Otter:

How do you find navigating up there? I know you're multi IFR rated, but how difficult do you think it would be to do VFR only? It looks nearly impossible from that shot, and I bet even more so with 100% snow coverage.

So far I've only flown within 25 NM of the airport (for training) and have yet to do any airport to airport navigation up north. The trees aren't going to be 100% snow covered in the winter so you should be able to pick out landmarks such as lakes, rivers, towns (though very few and far between up here), roads/ice roads and navigate between points with the use of a VRF Navigational Chart, compass, and basic pilotage/dead reckoning like they did it in the old days. A GPS or other Nav aids (ADF, VOR) would be a huge help though. The majority of flying is done via GPS direct from airport to airport. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

and to answer the OP, I'd love to fly a Pilatus PC6 Turbo Porter. They're just such a strangely designed aircraft with amazing performance: PT6A-27 turbine engine, excellent STOL and off strip performance, crazy rates of descent (~6000ft/min).

We fly a lot of aerobatics early on here. I've got 2 solos where all I did was aero for an hour. Pretty fun stuff.

I'm stoked today, I just checked instruments so tomorrow I start formation. Beyond excited to fly against my buddies.

i just turned 17 and should be getting my private in the next month. so much fun especially cause i fly in a 152 with no gps over the farm lands of Illinois it is a challenge but a great fucking time

Still havent soloed... Screw instructors and Pennsylvania Weather. Every time I do ground school my instructor said he was gonna have me solo.. I have 5 lessons scheduled this weekend so videos to come.

So yeah just did some flying the other day with the gopro mounted out on the wing. Was pretty sick, but not the best thing in the world. Did steep turns, and stalls, and some touch and goes. Not really much too see beyond that though. Would be great for instructors to reflect on a lesson though. The next use for it, will be mounting it in our 172's STC'ed camera port setup in the belly, so that when my dad does observation and inspection flights, he can directly overfly the area, and get a visual of what happened. Surprisingly good ground quality when looking at the video from the weekend.

Not sure if I'll get a commercial license this summer or not. Any opinions on that? Would love to get type rated for a pits or a decathalon, and an aerobatics endorsment at some point. Been practicing precision steep turns at 60 degrees, and pegging the needles and hitting my wake at the end of the turn and I love that, so aerobatics is the next natural step. Happy flying!

Guy above, hopefully you solo soon! My flight club that I learned with was a PITA like that to....

ive never flown before but seeing rory bushfield in the way i see it or which ever movie that it was that he was flying definitely inspired me to learn. It really does look like such an awesome way to go scout out backcountry lines.

never really been a huge interest of mine but this thread is convincing me otherwise. I did get to drive a plane for a couple minutes when I was like 16/17, it was surprisingly extremely simple (got to do flips/screws).. Granted I obviously didnt take off or land.

Awesome! No one ever knows what I'm talking about when I mention a a Helio, they're badass tho. Landing at 40 knots is unreal, cars passing you and shit. I was surprised at how simple and old school they are. This is my next step, my dads turbine goose. So much shit goin on in that but im gettin the hang of it.

OH HAI

i actually was really gung-ho about joining the naval air force when i was in middle school and the beginning of highschool. i was trying to get into annapolis and so i had contacted my congressman, the president of annapolis (technically title commander or something), had signed up for private flying lessons, and was in constant correspondence with the local recruiting officer. then when i turned 15 i went to an eye doctor and found out that my vision was really really bad, like 20/80 vision or something like that. thats when i knew that i would absolutely never be able to fly a fighter jet in my life and i was so crushed that i pretty much gave up on my dreams of flying altogether. ive recovered some interest and want to get my private pilot's license at some point and i play sims all the time, but ill never be fully satisfied.

theres good money to be made in being a commercial pilot. if you get into it early and stick with one company for a while you'd be pulling in 200k a year as a captain, idk about the states though, i think they make less

Wow, that thing is an absolute beauty! And yeah the Helio is sick, I hadn't heard of them up until last year, but now that I know about them, wow! They have spoilers on the wings to that aid in slow speed handling don't they?

Dustin, I totally missed your post. Aerobatics, that is soooo sick. What are you flying nowadays, still in the harvard/texan 2? And I'd assume you've done some formation flights, how did they go?

And squirrel, you'll find the same level of satisfaction in aerobatics I would think. It would be sick to fly in the military in something like an F-16, F-18, A-10, Dassault Rafael, F-35, Eurofighter, whatever jet your country is repping, but I'd be equally as happy fling an Edge 540, Slick 360, Extra 300, Yak-54.

haha did I ever say that I was some plane master? Fuck no, I do know that I pulled the stick and it flipped, sure his hand was probably on the stick to control any mistakes, and hell maybe he was controlling it the whole time (dont know how because I decided what I wanted to do).. And yes, I do the best helicopters on the mountain

Yea, its got huge flaps and leading edge slats, helio actually was the first to design the slats, just about all jets use the same design. They come down a little below 60 and really increase the surface area of the wing. When I got checked out in it my instructor had me pull the yoke all the way back on full power and it just sat there with the indicated speed at 0. It will not fully stall, kinda sketched me out when I hopped back in a 172 tho, had to keep the speed up.
