Shin bang

hey ns,
i suffer majorly from shin bang (as im sure many of you do aswell) and i was wondering if anyone could suggest to me some good brands of those silicon pads you put between your shin and the tongue of your boot.

Honestly go and see a legit bootfitter. Search google and see if there are any ski shops around your area and ask if they have a qualified bootfitter...specifically say bootfitter. This prevents you from going into a random shop and taking advice from someone not qualified on the subject.

I actually went and saw one today near my local mountain, my right boot was giving me some nasty pain and they felt 100% better leaving the shop. Best advice i can give is to see someone qualified!!!

yeh i agree although i have a really wide foot. And ive been looking at buying new boots but buying something like full tilts is just so exspesive....i want to use these pads for maybe 2 years and then once i have the funds ill buy a pair...

if you have a wide foot dont get full tilts. they are a skinny boot

yeh but they have that 102mm shell now and i can also blow them out? or is that a no go because at my local shop its free with boot purchase.

go to your shop tell them how you like to ski and get them to pick the boot for you. its like in harry potter you don't pick the boot the boot picks you

i see threads about shinbang all the time, but i literally have no understanding of it. i mean, i theoretically understand what happens, but i've never experienced it in all the time i've been skiing.

let me help you picture it....
its literally like someone has cracked you shin into little pieces but there still held together by your muscle and you want to keep skiing but one bad landing means 30 mins rest until you go again

Keep your boot cuff tight. Booster straps will help. Try to avoid landing backseat.

The only thing that all but eliminates shin bang is age. I used to have bad shin bang when I was 14-16. Now I'm 20 and I don't really have any problems with it anymore.

y friend who was recently fitted for boots sent a jump pretty deep and landed back seat on her left leg. she now has sharp pain down the left side of her leg (along the fibula). it hurts to walk and tilt her foot but not really to put weight on it. there is no bruising. little to no swelling and it hurts to lift her leg at certain angles. has anybody had a similar pain as this? i want to say its just regular old shin bang but she is a little worried its worse as she doesnt want to lose more of her season after fracturing her spine earlier in the season

yeh dude, i had this exact problem last season. i tried to throw a frontie off a cliff and backseat really badly. i couldn't put any pressure on my shins whatsoever and it was the worst pain i have ever experienced. although after about 3 days if went away although they were still very tender

I have it pretty bad right now. Unfortunately the only way to totally cure it is to not ski for a week or two which sucks. As for pads I have no experience with them and don't really know how well or if they even work.

I used to mogul ski pretty religiously, so I can confidently say I know shin bang and have dealt with it for many years. Generally, shin bang is not caused from actually "banging" your shin against the front of your boot. In fact, this is a good thing, and you should ALWAYS maintain solid forward pressure against the front of your boot. I'm talking a 70 degree angle between your foot and shinbone. Look at tammy wallnutz, he does it.

The worst shin bang is caused by landing backseat and straining the little muscles on the front of your shin that move your toes up and down. In the worst case, landing super far back can actually peel this muscle off your shin and fuck you up for weeks. The best way to prevent this is to GET YOUR BOOTS PROPERLY FITTED. Honestly, get boots that seem stupidly small when you buy them. If you can't get new boots, crank up the cuff of your boot to a ridiculous extent. As tight as it goes. Unbuckle on the lift if you need to. I've seen kids jam stuff in the cuff of their boots and it definitely helps, but I'd get some new boots this summer if you're really getting effed up.

I think the best I've seen is someone wrapping a thick wool sock around cardboard or some shit and stuffing that in. I'd stuff it in the back of the boot though, to ensure that you maintain forward pressure, this will help more than "padding" the front, trust me. That's my $.02

I use to get a lot of shin problems when i skied, shin bang, shin splints, pinched nerves... I switched over to the full tilts because i heard they had "no shin bang". I made the best choice of my life, I will never ride another boot again. The full tilts help me ski a lot longer, no pain at all.
The cons about the boots are, the buckles break easily.. so what, so do other boots. I ride the Konflicts and they have metal buckles, they have not broken yet. just look into metal buckles if thats the only thing worrying you.
You sir might want to really look into some full tilts, they'll help your shins and give them a break.
Or go cheaper and get some intuition boot liners. they wrap around your ankle and what not and they give alot more padding.

fabulous advice. 10's across the board. i'm assuming you're a licensed bootfitter and you've worked closely with this kids legs and feet, and you're familiar with his skiing abilities? perfect.

Full Tilts= no shin bang, all after bang.  That is assuming that they are the right size and right fit for you.  And were heat molded properly.  And they are the right flex...just go to the most trusted shop you know of as far as boot fitting goes, if they are legit then they should be able to get you dialed no problem.

A little off topic, but has anyone else had some of their leg hair taken off from the excessive rubbing against the boot? My boots seem to fit pretty well but I came home last weekend and theres a little patch of baby smooth skin on my lower shin....might just shave my legs

Hair being rubbed off just means that your riding the right amount (a lot).  You should be proud of that baby smooth skin.

Had the same problem after buying new boots. I have 3 days weekends and could never ski the 3rd day because I could hardly walk due to the shin pain. I bought these things called eliminators, they're just shin padding that gives your shins less room to move around inside the boot and I dont notice my shin pains at all anymore.

$40.00 pad beats buying new boots. Worked for both my roommate and I, its worth a shot.

Yeah Eliminators work for a number of problems.  In some cases its just a big band-aide for a bigger problem but most of the time it works well in a pinch.  We sell them in the shop and back in the day I used them for a couple of season...that is until I got in FTs, now I don't need them.  But if you cant afford new boots they are a good option.

to tell you the truth, im just an advanced 18 year old skier who has had 15 years of shin problems. and now since i switched to full tilts, I'm trying to spread their company to others. I've already converted maybe 10-15 adults and kids to them, all with a variety of skill levels and pains.
Once you go Full Tilt, you never go back.

Save a tree and get Eliminators it does the same thing. And then you wont have to stuff your boots like a pre teen stuffs her bra.

Ice ice baby haha.....i have full tilts and its not a bad but when u go hard and fall trying new stuff, which usually means backseat landings I still get some bang
