Slopestyle in the Olympics

Sounds like its gonna happen!! Bunch of people posting on twitter about it. If snowboarding has it, im pretty sure that means skiing with have it? This could be a big step.

why? skiing isn't ruined, this give the people who compete an opportunity to achieve the ultimate "athlete" goal that the majority of other athletes get to do, and that is to compete in the olympics. Sure, 99% of the skiers in the world wont be olympic athletes, but that doesn't mean that 99% has to be against the 1% getting to go to the most prestigious event for any athlete. There will still be ski videos, there will still be ski edits. Skiing is already separated (comp skiers and video skiers), the olympics isn't going to do anything but open opportunities for competitors to compete at a higher level.

its not going to ruin skiing, it wont effect you, the only thing is going to do is put money into the sport you love. get the fuck over it.

Very aware. I just think the olympics will be the epitome of it. Either way I realize some people love to compete and I love to watch them so this is a great thing either way good or bad judging.

To me, this means that all the nay-saying about halfpipe being in the Olympics is now irrelevant. You know, that whole "now people are just going to concentrate on pipe and the overall progression of the sports different avenues will be ignored" argument has no meat to it anymore. Personally I thought that whole argument was bogus to begin with seeing how nothing of the sorts happened to snowboarding.

My predictions for 2014 after event.

Lots of bitching about scoring on NS (even more than xgames)
Lots of commentary in ski movies about it. Although it would be cool to see a documentary about the changes in the way the athletes change their regular winter schedules to prepare for this.

Overall though im stoked.

I can understand halfpipe in the olympics but fuck slopestyle. I look at freestyle skiing as an art form more than a competitive sport.

Plus this will just push the training/serious/money making side of the sport instead of the style/fun/innovative side. Fuck this, its great for companies trying to make money but thats about it, atleast people will have a better understanding of freestyle skiing in my old highschool in Texas.

ALSO if skiers wanted to get an olympic medal they should have done aerials, moguls, racing, ski jumping, fucking cross country. Freestyle skiing does not equate to rules and regulations.

i was also kind of skeptical about slopestyle being in the lympics, but then i remembered that their will still be those out there just for fun working on innovative things. Those that are comp skiers now will continue to do so. Most of those that arnt will continue doing what they are doing now.

2. twall probably won't make it there because he'll be getting questioned by the kgb at the train station as to why he attracts so many 14 year old boys
3. sammy won't pass a single test the IOC throws his way

by 2014 there will be a whole new group of top pro skiers, just stop making predictions

Sorry but its not that simple.  It is impossible to predict exactly how the olympics will affect skiing, but the fact that it will have a variety of affects is certain.  Not only the amount of money coming from companies will change, the distribution and direction of that money may change as well.  The worlds general opinion of skiing will change.  Many of the affects of these new olympic events will be positive, however there will be negatives as well.  I am in no way against halfpipe and slopestyle being in the olympics.  I know how much it means to the skiers who will be involved.  I just hope the events are ran the right way, with a great course and ok judging.  Lets face it any event you walk away from and say the judging was ok it was actually really good.  I would personally really like to see a style rule involved such as a trick with less rotation than a 1080 or a creativity score for the rail section or something.  What I personally hope comes out of this is better parks around the world to ski on.  I think all freeskiers can agree that more jumps and jibs for everyone to ski on would be a good thing.  I guss I just urge everyone to be cautious and take a bit more of a wait and see approach with the olympics before making a commited statement as to how great it is.  It certainly has the potential to be amazing, and I support the inclusion, but i worry what might happen at the same time.

Anyone know if this could help bring back the U.S. Open in any way?

youre overthinking this situation. the money is going to be good, it will help create more contests like the us open. thinking that a style factor will be used is completely unreasonable. it will be similar to the xgames just a bigger stage. its not gonna be this different thing that everyone thinks its gonna be.

the judging will not be an issue. it worked at the world champs this year and will be just fine 3 years from now.

the new judging criteria put in place this year now has all 7 judges looking at the overall impression of the run and not on individual aspects so you don't have an air judge giving a low score because someone hits a rail.
