The context demonstrates otherwise. The 30 seconds before the hit involved a collision along the boards when Salo pinched to keep the puck in successfully, at which point Marchand punched him in the back of the head. It being the PP, Salo doesn't get involved but instead goes back to the point / high slot so that he can take a one timer if needed. Marchand follows him there and punches him in the back of the head AGAIN. Again, Salo doesn't respond. The puck ends up getting to the half boards, and as he did a few seconds earlier, Salo pinches, apparently hoping to keep the puck in. Marchand goes for the puck, looks like he's going to play it and at the last second, submarines Salo.
Given the context, and Marchand's history, you'll forgive a biased observer like myself his skepticism when Marchand says he was just trying to protect himself from an inevitable illegal hit from the well-known menace that is Sami Salo.
