K2 Domain CRACKED edge

Just wondered if this happened to any one else, i was using it on rails & it cracked in 2 places under foot.

Ive emailed K2 but i dont think they will do much about it?

 Who knows though, maybe they will help you out.

I broke 3 sets of 4frnt tnks

One of them didn't even make it to the park when i did a nose butter the whole edge blew out so i could fit my hand between the sidewall and edge. I didn't get a warranty...

it is skiing today. it is not broken either .. your fine as long as the edge doesnt pull out. bevel the edge down on the crack .. make it round so it doesnt catch on anything and tears out.

I fucked my self i took them back to the shop they said they was out of warranty so repaierd the edge the next time i used the ski the bit of edge they fitted bent then came out, but i got them at trade £150 insted of £270, but im still pissed cant get them for that price any more,

thats the worst point ive ever heard.

if you bash anything against metal (slide rails on skis) damage is to be expected. If you expect a product that wont break from hitting metal then you're out of luck.

Here's a cut and paste job from a reply I just put up for another thread:


"Anyway, the reason you edges cracked is not bad construction, its you.

Your edges start as a (relatively) soft and ductile material that will dent and ding when it hits rails. The more you hit rails the more the edge will work harden, making it harder for the edges to dent and ding more (the yield strength of the edge increases the more you hit it).

This is not a good thing for park skiers. As the edges get harder/stronger they also get more brittle. Eventually they get to the point where they will change from behaving like a ductile material (that dents, dings and deforms) to a brittle material which cracks.

Once your edges have cracked the way the adhesive between the edge and the ski is loaded changes and becomes much more damaging. As a result the adhesive will start to fatigue and will fail much more easily, i.e. your edges pull out.

If you want to prevent this happening at least get a diamond stone and take off the hardened steel on the edges after a good bit of rail action. Preferably get a shop to go over your edges every so often.

It is in the hardened material on the edge surface where the crack will initiate. Once that crack gets to a critical size it will go straight through your edge in about one and a third milliseconds. It does not matter how thick your edges are, once that crack propagates its going to go all the way through, whether your edges are 1 millimetre thick or one metre thick.

If you remove the hardened material on the surface you'll remove a lot of the microcracks that can initiate a crack through the edge. You'll also reveal softer, more ductile material underneath which is less likely to crack."

I should probably write a better explanation of this behaviour at some point

PS the first line of the quote isn't meant to sound pissy at you, The thread I responded to (where my quote comes from) started with this:

"So it snowed 20 inches at my home mountain last week, so I spent a couple days lapping the park pretty hard. after sliding rails for 8 hours 2 days in a row, MY SKI HAD ONE EDGE CRACK UNDERFOOT wTF>???????"

I'm stuck in London and some idiot is skiing park with 20 of fresh floating about.

Screw 'WTF my edge cracked', WTF be in the park?! I hope he was trolling (rarely hear that said).

Didn't read that bit about it being day 2. That is surprising and you may have a legit claim. I just jumped to conclusions as I've heard so many people say that some ski is crap quality because the edges cracked when its rarely the manufacturer's fault

Could have been an impurity in the edge or pre-existing damage. However, it seems pretty unlucky that you'd get two bad defects leading to a crack. How close are the cracks to each other (assuming they're on the same edge).

If this is a manufacturing defect then K2 should warranty it and make the edge manufacturer stump up for the cost. Only problem is determining the cause is normally f**king expensive as you need an Engineer and a decent microscopy lab at the least to determine the cause so I guess either K2 will warranty it or not (irrespective of the true cause)

Guessing by the name your in London?! If K2 say no then drop me a message in the New Year. If you can get it to Imperial College/Kensington I may be able to chuck it under a 'scope to try and get an idea of what happened.

Yes im in london, i have emailed K2 but not heard any thing back yet? yes the 2 crack was on the same ski about 1cm apart and the side wall came out abit too, but i took it back to were i bought it and they said no point in them sending them back as impact damage is not covered & it could be repaired.

so i had it repaired and after a while on rails the new section bent then pulled out. forgot to tell K2 about the side wall if i ever here back i will reply and let them know

i can get last years abangs for £165 so might get them?

like me your from england you should be able to have a reasonable debate without running your mouth like some little chav off the croxteth,

but honestly i feel for you, you saved your dough and your bummed your shits fucked after not too long but bottom line, park skis get damaged, it sucks, and it sucks that you got yours damaged after so little use, you would have been probably better just riding them till they die rather than fixing that edge crack as once you replace the edge its a lot worse than having the edge crack, might be fine on your groomer troopers but replacing and edge isnt designed to then be trashed on rails its just not gonna hold up to the abuse, its just some epoxy and ptex, I wouldnt expect my bindings to stay on with some sticky tape now would I?

I dont know what to suggest as you have now repaired the edge and gone the other way but in future try and round them off as much as possible underfoot, especially as your gonna be doing a lot of rails in a snow dome, and like the other guy said new skis take more of a beating than old ones as there sort of worn into it.

You might have done it anyway, its just the luck of the draw, im on some anthems that have taken a lot of abuse but they seem to have weathered the storm pretty well, I could get a new pair tommorow and get a shit load of edge cracks, it just happens.

At least you didn't get some No Times or Suspects, now that would be stupid.

This happens to all park skis.  I personally haven't ridden the domains, but I've had the problem with my afterbangs.  It won't really affect anything and it shouldn't be a problem.  After like 30-50 days of riding it might be pulled out. After a while all park skis break.  Don't worry about it man.

God knows why they replaced that section of edge. An edge that's cracked in one place and still connected by the original adhesive (and kinda smooshed into the epoxy sandwich in there) is always going to be 100 times stronger than one that's cut in 2 places then hammered into the torn up hole in the ski left behind when they ripped your old piece of edge out.

They probably would have lasted ages with just a little crack. Some people I know have park skis with like 20 cracks in them but it's not an issue until the edge actually starts pulling out.

second, get over it you flappy vagina. the problem is that he is actually right. If you ski park, you're going to get edge cracks and you have no chance at getting new skis out of a warrantee. even dumber, you had the shop tear out the perfectly good edge and put in new edge where it would obviously still have at least 2 fracture points where the new edge meets the old edge.

I got 4 edge cracks my first day of riding and i'm up to about 10 total after 20 days of riding on my new skis. nothing is pulling out and the skis ride just fine. i'm sure they will eventually pull out, but thats what happens to park skis

I just started hitting rails for the first time on my volkl walls today and i cracked an edge. It happens, and if you continue to hit rails it will continue to crack in different places until the sidewall cracks and the skis snaps. Or the ski will waterlog if moisture gets in and then they will delam or snap. Rails kill skis, its the way it is unfortunately.

well your lucky you got them replaced. k2 skiis stand up better to rails then most else out there, they have some of the fattest edges 3.5 mm and some of here skiis not sure about the domain have urethane sidewalls underfoot. you need to land smoother braahhhh!!!

They warrantied them ?  Mine are cracked at 4 places on each ski (so a total of 8 ). But I'm not too worried, yes I am, but not that much

Picturing this fool screaming this in a British accent haha. Every damn ski is gonna have edge cracks if you hit rails. I've had edges crack on day 1. It's not K2 that's just park skiing for ya. As soon as you hit a rail it voids every companies warranty. Get over it and go skiing they won't pull out for a while and maybe never will. Edge cracks are not a big deal at all.
