Cannon gl2 or canon vixia hs200

hey ns.

i want to buy a camcorder for this year and get into filming. ive looked around a lot and i was convinced i was going to buy the hs200 but i came across a gl2 on here for 600. the hs200 new is like 910. the gl2 comes with a lens hood and a wide angle. im torn on what i should get. i want to be able to learn lots on this camera and spend some more money in a year or two and upgrade. somebody who knows there stuff help me out?

SD and your still on mini dv, don't get a gl2 it's old technology that is only going to become more obsolete. You will get better looking shots with the hfs200.

For sure get the HFs200. I've shot with the hf200 which is the previous model, and ive also shot with the gl2. The hf200, can shoot in 1080p, 24mbps in either 60i,24p,or 30p. While i believe the gl2 can only shoot in 1080i. Also Flash memory is where the market is going, they are easier to handle and tapes are going obsolete as someone said before. The hfs200 shoots at 6.01mp's for video. The hf200 shoots at 2.99 mp's. Wait...are you guys kidding? I haven't had time to get on NS lately so maybe my meter is broken but some of the posts in this thread are just stupid.

The HFS200 is the better camera hands down. Look up the specs! The GL2 has been out for YEARS, that shit is close to being discontinued, if its not already.

The ONLY miniDV SD camera you should consider buying is the DVX. Other than that its all obsolete. Check out DVXuser.com for used ones - they come and go like wildfire over there.

Do yourself a favor and skip the GL2. It looks cool compared to the HFS200 but performance wise its wayyyy behind.

People are just recommending the GL2 because it has a lens hood and a handle. HS200 is much better quality wise. I know its been said already but GL2 is REALLY old technology.

will i be able to learn on the hs200 though. i am thinking in 2 years or so of upgrading into a more expencive camera. i just want someting i can learn on for a year or two. will the hs200 be able to do that or is just point and shoot.

get a used dvx or hmc40. hs200 is good quality but limitd manual controls and the gl2 will have more controls but its reeeeeeeeeeally old.

I can vouch for getting an ag-hmc40. Great camera. I love mine and there are plenty of manual controls to learn on if you are just starting out.

this is a good suggestion. definitely do not get the GL2. it's so old and not even that great of an SD camera. if you are that worried about learning how to use a camera, get a DVX. used hmc40 is the best though, because you will learn how to use a camera but also get HD footage.

if you can't afford the hmc, i would recommend getting the hs200. learning how to use a camera is important, but HD is so much the norm right now that i think you would be better off with the vixia

thanks. i really just want to shoot some good footage and be happy with what i get. im going to go with the hs200 for now and in a year or so look to upgrade when i have some cash.

The GL2 is a solid camera...but I can see now why people might like the hs200 better...if i had my choice id get the XL2 (XL3 to debut soon!)
