That second one isn't fantastic in the noise/sharpness department because I was shooting without flashes, mind you I don't even have flashes, so I was really just making do with what I had and I like how it turned out.

Tumblr is populated by faux-art teenage hipsters. The people reblogging the washed out photos are the same people taking bokeh test shots of tree branches in their backyard.

Since some of the world's best photography gets posted with little to no recognition and zero credit, I feel completely justified in condescending Tumblr's photographic tastes.

Tumblr should be appreciated for what it is: consumption porn. Romantic image macros of consumer symbols and behavior (e.g. artisan coffee/books/knives/motorcycles/cameras/fashion/etc. and the fantasy lifestyles attached to the consumption of those goods).

tl;dr - anyone who uses Tumblr as a barometer of fine art is a peasant.

Lighting man. You need lighting.

Your subject will not be adequately lit without having hot lights or off camera strobes. Hot lights are the cheapest, but in order to have those running you have to have a generator which is not the cheapest. If you can find a way to get a power source, picking up one or two 500w lights at any hardware store would be a great investment for photography. Your composition is ok, just remember to aim a little more for the corners. Look through Erik Seo, and Mattias Fredriksson's portfolios too, they consistently kill it and you can learn a lot about where to place the action by looking through their portfolios.

When looking through, ask yourself "where is the subject" in relation with the frame of the photo and then ask "why does it work". Keep it at man!!!!

it was pretty nice out last night so I picked up my camera (for the second time in months) and thought I'd try a pano of my downtown from a spot I've done it from before, to show the contrast between summer and winter. I just wish our skyline was more interesting haha

It's a cycle dude. You start off with the mentality that your images suck, but continue to shoot and through (sometimes overly)critical critique of yourself you improve. Eventually you plateau where you are finally satisfied with your work, for now, and then continuing to shoot sometimes become lazy or unexcited with your work and fall back to position one where you no longer like it.
