After over three decades of nurturing freeskiing talent, Momentum Ski Camps has announced the cessation of its summer programs on Whistler's Horstman Glacier. The camp's recent newsletter attributes this decision to Whistler Blackcomb's confirmation that diminishing snowpacks and glacial recession have rendered summer operations unsafe and unfeasible.

Established in 1992 with just 43 participants, Momentum evolved into a cornerstone of the freestyle community, annually hosting over 1,200 skiers and snowboarders. The camp has been instrumental in shaping the careers of numerous Olympians, World Cup victors, and X Games medalists.

The camp's leadership has passed on their thanks for the memories fostered over the years, acknowledging the massive contributions of campers, staff, and pro coaches and the legacy of Momentum at Whistler. Despite the current setback, Momentum remains committed to the future of summer ski and snowboard training in Whistler, and to offering progression sessions at their BC home. Discussions with Whistler Blackcomb are underway to explore sustainable solutions aimed at reviving summer skiing opportunities at the resort. In addition, Momentum will be offering spring camps at Whistler in May:

"While we are devastated by this news, we are excited to offer two alternative camps in May, taking advantage of spring conditions, Blackcomb’s Park, private mogul lanes, and airbag training.

All Ages Camp → May 4 – 10 (5 days on snow, 2 travel days)

Adult Only Camp → May 10 – 18 (6 days on snow, 1 rest day, 2 travel days)

These camps will follow our traditional summer camp format, with both Full Package (hotel, meals, activities, transfers) and Coaching-Only options. As always, our all-star coaching crew will be there to guide and inspire your progression.

We will have access to Blackcomb’s amazing Spring Park and airbag training, as well as both private mogul lanes and all-mountain terrain. May offers spring-like conditions with a much larger area to ski and ride, as well as the chance to enjoy some of Whistler’s great summer activities in the valley in the late afternoons."

The challenges faced by Whistler reflect broader environmental concerns impacting summer skiing operations. In recent years, Whistler's glaciers have experienced significant retreats, leading to the removal of the Horstman T-bar in 2021 due to safety issues arising from the glacier's decline. In Europe, summer-long snowparks are now almost non-existent, with the exception of Zermatt. As the global freeski community grapples with these environmental shifts. The legacy of Momentum's legendary summer camps serves as a poignant reminder of the evolving challenges and the resilience required to adapt to a changing climate. But we're also stoked to see you out there crushing it at Momentum this spring.
