Here we are again, the Newschoolers Awards return for another year, but importantly, for the first time with Newschoolers as an independent operation. This year, and hopefully forever more, we wanted to double down on what we, and we think our community values the most in skiing. There are already medals for those who go out there and do the most technical tricks, crush the comp circuit and push skiing's physical limits. For the rest, well, there's a lot less out there. We want to reward those skiers who we watch day in, day out, on social media, but far more importantly, in longer form projects and works of skiing art.
It's not that we don't love seeing the limits of skiing get pushed, it's just that it's that "je ne sais quoi" that really makes something memorable and because of its intangibility, that can be hard to 'win' at. We assembled the Avengers, AKA our judging panel which features @Twig , representing NS, @WIllW , @katrina , @creaturelo , and @Mayrandpodcast , and we poured over the years content, as well as our sixth sense of who really moved the needle this year. We have 6 judged awards, along with two trick of the year polls, which will be announced in the coming days. We'll also be awarding a Jury's Pick trophy and a Hall Of Fame addition in due course. For now, we thank Ruroc & ON3P for their support in making these awards happen and without further ado, present THE NOMINEES:

First up, our Skier Of The Year nominees. These are without question, the hardest to cut down to a reasonable number because there are SO many skiers out there crushing. At the end of the day, projects are the biggest factor here, but we also wanted to reward skiers who do it for the community, for the love and with the homies. Skiers who think outside the box, break boundaries and don't always have the biggest of budgets. Of course, this isn't a perfect science. And doubtless there are skiers on the list many will think shouldn't be, and omissions people think should. Tough shit but feel free to give us an earful.

Then we have our project awards, Movie Of The Year and Best Short Film (with Jury's Pick TBA). How we judge these is again, down to a certain amount of... flavor and judges discretion. The biggest factor for me personally (Twig) is, did the cut in question make me want to go skiing and get clips? Of course, each judge has their own perspective, and we factored in community impression too but ultimately I like to think these are all skiers' skier projects.

As a community, fostering new talent and group projects in skiing are super important to us. As such, Breakthrough Skier and Crew Of The Year are two of our most treasured awards. Neither, however is easy to define. Breakthrough Skier, in particular, is hard to define. What counts as a breakthrough? For us, it's about moving into a new 'echelon' of skiers, growing your presence in the industry to a point it can no longer be ignored. It's still hard to draw a line, but we've done our best. The same goes for crews. What is a crew vs a production company? We have to draw the line somewhere, and these are our nominees:
Breakthrough Skier
Tom Galarneau
Shiori Takahashi
Jacob Belanger
Shonny Charbonneau
Jasper Skidmore
