John Fox has been named the new head coach of the Denver Broncos, the team said Thursday.

"Coach Fox is a great fit for us, not only with his coaching ability, but also with his personality," Elway wrote on Twitter. "He is a dynamic and prove leader who will energize our entire organization."

Fox was Carolina's head coach for nine seasons, taking over a 1-15 team that he led to a Super Bowl appearance two years later; Carolina lost the title game to New England. Fox brings a 73-71 regular-season record -- all with Carolina -- with him to Denver. He has a 5-3 record in the postseason.

His contract with the Panthers wasn't renewed after injury-plagued Carolina finished the year an NFL-worst 2-14.

The other finalists for the Broncos job were believed to be Rick Dennison, currently the offensive coordinator in Houston, and Jacksonville offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.

McDaniels was fired midway through the 2010 season after the Broncos started the year with a 3-9 record -- Eric Studesville, who also interviewed for the permanent job, took over McDaniels' spot on an interim basis.
