Canada has struggled for snow all winter, with resorts across the Rockies and PNW receiving below-average snowfall.

Yesterday a Whistler Blackcomb official confirmed that summer camps, like the famous Momentum, have been cancelled for 2024. With warm temps and rain plaguing the 23/24 season this won't come as a shock. Could this be the beginning of the end for Momentum Camps? We hope not, but with climate change showing no signs of abating this is worrying for all of us in the industry. This pattern is becoming all too familiar with Zermatt's summer park also struggling in recent years.

An official statement from Whistler Blackcomb Communications Manager Dane Gergovich provided the following statement about the decision:

"Whistler Blackcomb is unable to host camps during the 2024 summer on the Horstman Glacier. This decision was not made lightly – we know these camps, and this experience, have a long history at our resort. Unfortunately, the conditions related to this season’s snowfall prevent summer camps to safely operate this year."

This is not the first news of the receding glacier changing the face of the Horstman Glacier on Blackcomb mountain. In 2021 the Horstman T Bar was permanently removed due to the glacial melt and the 23/24 season has seen snowfall levels have been 16% below average.

Momentum Camps have been a staple of freestyle skiing for years; home to many great games of SLVSH, the training ground for some of our favorite riders and an incredible experience for young skiers looking to hone their skills during the warmer months.

Let's hope that things pick up for next summer but I wouldn't hold your breath...
