Shenzhen, China's southern tech hub, is set to construct what could become the largest indoor ski resort globally. Spanning over 10 hectares (24 acres), the Ice and Snow World resort in Shenzhen will feature winter sports facilities across 8 hectares, equivalent to the size of 11 football pitches, according to the city government's official WeChat account.
China already boasts some of the world's largest indoor ski facilities, including the record-breaking Wanda Snow Park in the northern province of Heilongjiang, covering an area equal to approximately nine football pitches. State-owned Zhuhai Huafa Group has invested over 29.6 billion yuan (US$4.15 billion) in the Shenzhen project, which is expected to be completed by November 2025.
Situated adjacent to the Shenzhen World Convention and Exhibition Centre, the resort aims to attract global tourists and compete with other mega theme parks such as Shanghai Disneyland and Universal Studios in Beijing, as stated by the Shenzhen government.
The state-of-the-art facilities at the Shenzhen snow park will include an 83-meter (272-foot) ski drop and a 441-meter single ski track, both setting new records for China. The complex, designed in the shape of a leaping blue whale, will also feature themed hotels and shopping centers to enhance its appeal to visitors.
Hu Qi, an official responsible for the design at Zhuhai Huafa, stated, "With the theme of ice and snow as the core feature, we expect to create an efficient and complex cultural tourism complex." Huang Yuanchao, deputy general manager of Huafa's Shenzhen branch, added that after the resort opens in 2025, it is anticipated to attract approximately one million tourists annually, hosting international competitions and promoting skiing for all. Additionally, the project is expected to boost the overall development of the area.
Huafa's statement affirmed that the snow quality at the resort would meet the standards required for hosting international skiing competitions, with future plans potentially including the establishment of a youth winter games training camp.
Shenzhen currently houses two smaller indoor skiing resorts, including a 0.43-hectare facility at the Window of the World theme park and a 0.54-hectare complex named Karoo Ice Snow, which opened in April.
