Sammy Carlson Invitational: Nosebutter Double Cork 10

by TheSkiMonster
May 21st 2012 - 0 comments

Over the weekend, the Sammy Carlson Invitational returned after taking a year off. The event was held at Mt. Bachelor and featured a 90 foot kicker that transitioned into a massive wall ride. Henrik Harlaut took the podium with an uncharacteristic winning trick that caught everyone by surprise. He won with a nosebutter double cork 10, but this was not your ordinary double cork. Henrik skied around the 90 foot jump and threw this trick off of the landing. He popped up off the knoll of the landing and stomped a perfectly executed nosebutter double cork 10. I didn't even know that was possible until I watched Henrik throw it down. He has to be every pro skier's favorite skier with the way he performs at these competitions. Although he doesn't always make the podium, Henrik throws down so hard and with so much style. He is definitely one of my favorite skiers and I look forward to watching him at every event.

Henrik Harlaut's nosebutter double cork 10:

Tanner Hall made an appearance over the weekend, and this time he brought his skis. This was his first competition back and he skied really well. Tanner threw down with a double back flip into a ridiculous flat spin five. Good to see Tanner Hall back at it!

2013 MasterCraft X-Star Sneak Peek

by TheSkiMonster
May 18th 2012 - 0 comments

The 4th Generation MasterCraft X-Star was unveiled at the Surf Expo last September in Orlando Florida.  At the unveiling Zane Schwenk ran through all the well thought out features and improvements of the new boat.  Right after the unveiling of the new X-Star there was a lot of radio silence, the boat wasn't seen at any of the boat shows, MasterCraft enthusiasts that wanted to buy the boat from their dealers weren't able to, no one seemed to know when the new boat was going to be produced and shipped out to dealers.

In recent days the new X-Star has begun to resurface; in videos, forums, and pictures on Facebook.  The first stop of the PWT or Pro Wakeboard Tour starts today in Akworth Georgia and the boat that will be pulling the pros will be the 2013 MasterCraft X-Star.  Here's a glimpse of what the new boat looks like, the boat and the wake look ridiculous.  MasterCraft lives up to their tagline; "Held to a higher Standard"

Five Hour Friday: Week 6

by TheSkiMonster
May 18th 2012 - 0 comments

Got some new music to get your weekend going.

If heavy electro synths and dub house are your jam, then DirtyLoud needs to be on your Apple mp3 player of choice.

TheFatRat has been remixing some great songs, Avicii's Levels, Gotye's Somebody I Used To Know, and Foster The People's Don't Stop.  His chill yet engergetic productions transfer over to his mixes, like this one for instance.

Fashen has Pugs, takes cool instagrams, and is a really dope DJ.  Play this mix as your leaving work with the windows down.

Richard Fraioli a Boston household name, just dropped another mix.  He's a cool dude and his mixes  are dope find him and follow him.... On twitter and facebook I mean, not in real life.. That would just be weird.

Sander Van Doorn is on a Rocket Ship To The Moon (Charlie Sheen Voice) with his weekly mixes and the anthems he's been pumping out.  He should be filling up the S section in you iPod.

Coors Light Special (lake) Edition Can

by TheSkiMonster
May 17th 2012 - 0 comments

The ads on TV and the internet got me, I broke down and had to buy a case of Coors Light.  Coors didn't improve the taste of their gateway beer, it still tastes like mildly flavored carbonated water.  Which is ok, Coors drinkability is phenomenal.  What made me break down and buy Coors Light was the new Special Edition can.  The can reminded me of the amazing beverage I enjoyed as a kid, Crystal Pepsi, which for some unknown reason is no longer in existence.  In the ads the can looked lighter, faster and cleaner; which is exactly what most people are try to be during the Summer.

Stoked on how this new gimmick could improve my Happy Hour, I went to the Liquor Store and grabbed a 30 pack for me and some friends.  The case was everything I imagined it would be; sleek, sexy, and clean.  I got back home and put it in the fridge awaiting for the clock to strike Beer:30 and the mountains to turn blue.

Beer:30 came, the case got cracked and I set the beers on the table.  Seeing the new Special Edition Coors Light can for the first time was not everything it was supposed to be.  The can wasn't sleek, sexy or clean looking.  The can looked as though it had been salvaged after five years of sitting on the bottom of the lake.  The can looked more like something Coors would post on their Facebook page for #throwbackthursday than a new innovation.

The can doesn't make me feel as though I'm tapping the rockies, it reminds me more of drinking the water around Big Island on Lake Minnetonka.  Cheers to the marketing team at Coors, you convinced me to purchase more Coors Light's than I would have liked, you got me.  Here's to the summer of 2012, Cheers!  (But seriously I still like the taste of Coors Light, no hard feelings.  This blog was inspired by Mikey Marsh at New England Freshwater Marine)

Oasis of the Seas

by TheSkiMonster
May 17th 2012 - 0 comments

This is not only one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen, but it’s also one of the coolest. On the cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, there is not one Flowrider surf machine… there are two. The double-barrel Flowriders are position directly across from each other on the top deck of the worlds largest cruise ship. As if surfing on a gigantic ocean liner while traveling on the beautiful waters of the Caribbean wasn’t enough, now you and your buddies can all surf at the same time. DUELING SURF MACHINES! This for sure makes my ridiculous list.

I'd be willing to book a cruise for the sole purpose of shredding The Oasis/Flowrider/Caribbean gnar. #winning

Apres Ski: Bunyan Room - Loon Mountain, NH

by TheSkiMonster
May 17th 2012 - 0 comments

Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH is New England’s most convenient ski resort. Located directly off of Interstate 93, Loon Mtn is just over a two-hour drive from Boston. The mountain offers exceptional White Mountain skiing, a plethora of lodging options and a super fun Après Ski scene. The town of Lincoln is filled with bars and restaurants ready to cater to all winter vacation goers. Before you head into town make sure you start your Après Ski on the mountain at The Paul Bunyan Room. The Paul Bunyan Room, located in the Octagon Lodge (the gondola side), is a perfect spot to grab your first cocktail of the day.

The Bunyan Room is on the second floor of the lodge and can be accessed directly from the slopes. As you enter from the outside, you walk across a wrap-around deck with plenty of standing room for your entire crew. The deck looks directly out at the Seven Brothers chair lift, and is perfect for soaking up mid-day sun while enjoying a premier draft beverage. The bar itself has a classic local ski bar feel. With a fussball table, popcorn machine and glass beer mugs hanging from bar, this place will make you feel like your Après-ing in a ski-house man cave. The Bunyan Room has an excellent selection of draft and bottled beers. After a hard day skiing, I tend to gravitate towards a premium local brew. Theres nothing like a microbrew after an awesome day on the mountain.

Whether you’re looking to grab a quick drink to celebrate another epic day or looking for a cozy spot with a fantastic view, The Bunyan Room at Loon Mountain is sure to fulfill all of your Après Ski needs.

Where to Wakeboard: New England

by TheSkiMonster
May 16th 2012 - 0 comments

The New England area has some awesome places to drop in the boat, fill up the ballast and shred some wake. I’m sure there are countless fresh water spots that I have yet to encounter, but these are five riding locations that I have experienced and found very enjoyable. When pondering the question, “Where to wakeboard this summer?”, take these places into account and add them to your wakeboarding wish list.

Sebago Lake / Long Lake, Maine

Long Lake, located in southern Maine, is eleven miles long and is perfect for long wakeboard passes. It is located directly north of Sebago Lake, which is the deepest and second largest lake in Maine. Given its proximity to Sebago, a popular tourist destination for weekend lake goers, Long Lake is much quieter and always has excellent riding conditions no matter what time of day. Long Lake feeds into Sebago, so when your done riding head south through the river and explore one of Maine’s most popular summer spots.

Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire

Winnipesaukee is New Hampshire’s largest lake and is centrally located for easy access across New England. On the weekends most of the lake gets rough because of epic boating fails, but the east side of the lake features awesome places to ride. Wolfboro Bay and Johnson Cove usually have excellent water for riding. Both bays offer a sweet backdrop of New Hampshire’s landscape and are ideal for both wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire

Located off of Interstate 89 in central New Hampshire, Lake Sunapee is a gorgeous lake that is perfect for wakeboarding! It is a large lake with small boats, making good water easy to find. With Mount Sunapee ski area filling up the skyline, there are some awesome passes to be had all over this lake. Inboard boats are very popular on Lake Sunapee, which means everyone is there to do one thing, Shred Gnar!

Merrimack River - Massachusetts / New Hampshire

The Merrimack River is 117 miles long and flows from Franklin, NH to Newburyport, MA. There are many different sections of the Merrimack that are optimal for wakeboarding. The river has multiple dams, which make the boating sections extremely quiet and super glassy. The coolest thing about wakeboarding on a river is that there is no need to turn. This makes for ideal conditions when practicing a certain trick.

Long Pond - Dracut, MA

Long Pond is a small lake in Northeast Massachusetts that is perfect for any water sport activity, especially wakeboarding. This small little body of water is a New England wakeboarders paradise. The lake is home to small boats, nearly rockless water and perfect glass everyday of the week. Its size is ideal for pulling long passes and setting up huge double-ups. Long Pond is a place where wakeboard progression happens in one day of riding.

Marina Bay Sands - Singapore

by TheSkiMonster
May 16th 2012 - 0 comments

People love ridiculouness, things that are outrageously over the top, with the volume cranked to 11.  If you have 8 Billion dollars you can build the most expensive casino in the world, The Marina Bay Sands.  The Marina Bay Sands is located in Singapore.  The question isn't what does this hotel and casino have, the question is what doesn't it have.  Boasting over 2500 hotel rooms, 1.3 million square foot convention center, 2 theatres, 500 tables, 1600 slot machines, an ice skating rink, and a 50 acre resort on the roof.

The 50 acre resort on top of the 55 Story Marina Bay Sands is absolutely ridiculous. The 500 foot long infinity pool looks over Marina Bay with the Singapore's Skyline as the backdrop, ridiculous.  Staying in the hotel will cost you a pretty penny, $1000 - $4000 per night, but access to the 3900 person capacity Sky Park is only $20 for adults, $17 for Senior Citizens and $14 for children.

Summer Sunglasses

by TheSkiMonster
May 15th 2012 - 0 comments

Wearing sunglasses on the water is standard operating procedure. The summer sunglasses you select will set the tone for the entire day. These are five pairs of sunglasses that are my go to shades for the summer of 2012.

Oakley Frogskins – Blacklight Pink, Yellow with 24k Lens

The neon yellow stems really pop when they're in the sun, and the 24k lens adds a whole new level of color when out on the water.

Oakley Holbrook – Limited Edition Deuce Coupe

This limited edition Holbrook is neon green, need I say more...

Ray Ban Wayfarer – Original Frame, Tortoise Shell, Polarized Brown Lens

A friend of mine turned me on to these glasses. The Wayfarer's give off a vibe that is extremely stylish, yet steezy at the same time. Whether you own a yatch or party at electro shows, these sunglasses will make you feel like a boss.

Oakley Dispatch II – Persimmon Fade, Fire Iridium Lens

This is a brand new model in the Oakley line-up. The Oakley Dispatch II is new and improved, with Oakley's three-point-fit and interchangeable metal icons. When your wearing these sunglasses, you're truly killing it! Read TheSkiMonster's full Oakley Dispatch II Review Here.

Ray Ban Aviator – Gunmetal Frame, G-15 XLT Polarized Lens

The Ray Ban Aviator is the classic pair of summer sunglasses. These shades are the most recognizable and most respected among Top-Gun enthusiasts. Question: Have you ever driven full throttle across the lake wearing Aviators with "Highway to the Danger Zone" on max volume?... Well you should... because that my friends, is America.

Top 5 Tracks of the Week!

Deadmau5 has been tweeting about The Veldt for a couple weeks now, not only can you get your hands on the OG, but now you can listen to the Tommy Trash Remix.

DJ Kue is one of my favorite producers, his work sounds especially good on the boat coming through the JL tower speakers.

Deniz Koyu remixes Kaskades 'Turn It Down', Not sure which remix I like better this one or Le Castle Vania's.

Haydn Hoffmann makes the cut for this weeks Top Five Tuesday because of the tempo breakdown during the song, going from 128bpm down to 110bpm.  Nothing wrong with a song that takes you on a journey.

This is just plain dope!  If you have ever wondered what Skrillex songs would sound like performed by an orchestra, this is your lucky day.  Play it loud, gives me serious chills everytime.

How To Pack A Cooler

by TheSkiMonster
May 14th 2012 - 0 comments

Every summer I always encounter a cooler that is packed so horribly it makes me think, “Who taught this person how to party?” I am usually pretty good about keeping my composure smiling and saying thank you for coming, but not today. This blog is a simple tutorial for everyone who has no clue on what they are doing when attending someone else’s boat, cookout or camper.

How to pack a cooler in 4 simple steps:

1.  Makes sure your cooler is clean inside and out.

No one wants to grab food or beverages from a dirty moldy cooler. Be sure to use soap and water to properly sanitize your cooler before placing any items inside. You would think this is an obvious step, but trust me it’s not.

2.  Place beverages evenly inside before adding ice.

This step is extremely simple and is very important to maximize space and achieve the ultimate level of coldness for your beverages. Arrange cans or bottles evenly across the bottom of cooler then add a thin layer of ice. Repeat this process as many times as necessary until the desired amount of beverages are being chilled. Also, be sure to break up the ice before opening the bag. No one likes large iceberg looking chunks. They take up to much space, and are nearly impossible to break-down once they are out of the bag.

3.  All food items are placed on top.

Once the desired amount of beverages are inside, place all food items on the top or final layer of the cooler. This will make the food easily accessible and will eliminate any food from getting to cold or destroyed. It is the absolute worst when someone brings a cooler with sandwiches, fruit and/or chips on the bottom. The food is either frozen solid or disgustingly soggy. Don’t be that guy who brings the soggy sandwiches.

4.  Happily hand over the cooler to the boat owner for proper storage.

This is the final and most important step. The cooler should be properly stored on the boat, and the only person who knows how to do that is the boat’s owner. Don’t be stubborn and say you want to keep it between your legs because you don’t want anyone to drink your girlfriends twisted teas. Just cooperate and oblige with the owner’s wishes, and I guarantee that you will have a much better time.

Follow these 4 simple steps and your cooler will be expertly packed and ready for all boating activities.

How to Wake Surf: Ballast 101

by TheSkiMonster
May 14th 2012 - 0 comments

A common question we get over here at The Ski Monster and see in forums is 'How do I weight my wakeboard boat for wake surfing?'  I've owned Malibus and MasterCrafts and have friends with Nautiques and Supras, and the same is true for every boat out there you need to buy aftermarket ballast, stock ballast isn't enough.  If you have been surfing with just stock ballast and have trouble finding the sweet spot, or staying with the wave, keep reading, epic wake surfing is with in reach.  (<- That totally sounded like an infomercial selling something for $19.95)

Use the stock ballast to sink your boat, completely fill up all the tanks.  This will make your surf wake longer and give it a larger sweet spot, making it much easier for beginners to toss the rope in.  Use the additional ballast to give your boat lean, and use your voice activated ballast (the passengers on your boat ;)) to help fine tune the length of your surf wake.  If you feel like the wake is huge and your surfing to close to the boat, add weight to bow of the boat to make the wake longer.  If the wake feels long and like your having to fight to keep up with the boat, add more lean or weight to the back of the boat to give the wake more push.  The bigger your boat is, the more aftermarket ballast you will need.  On most 20-22ft V-Drive wakeboard boats, adding 1500 - 2500 is ideal.

Speed is the next piece of the pie.  Everybody's speedometer is a little different unless your using Zero Off, a GPS Speed Control system.  Your going to be in between 10 and 12mph.  The more weight you add to your boat the faster you'll be able to go.  Having a faster wave will make tricks especially getting air much easier.

In our current boat a 2009 MasterCraft X-2, we add an addtional 1500-2200 pounds of ballast, including voice activated ballast.  Our surf wake is about 4ft tall and 20ft long at 11.2 mph (we have Perfect Pass not Zero Off, Speed will vary slightly), plenty big for experts and a huge sweet spot for beginners.

A few additional wake surfing tips: Surf in the deeper parts of you lake, when the water gets under 10ft the wave starts to get smaller.  Wake Surf competitions are done on sections of lakes and rivers that are no less than 20ft deep for optimal wake shape and size.  Drive the boat straight, there is no need to drive in a circle, driving in a circle messes up the water for other boaters and makes it harder for beginners and kids after they have fallen.  What I've suggested for ballast is more than the capacity on your boat, be careful, make sure you bilges are working and that you don't add way too much weight to your boat, ski boats can't take as much weight as a wakeboard boat, the gunnel isn't as big.  Only surf behind inboard boats no I/O's or outboards.  Lastly have fun, wake surfing is one of the most fun low impact sports you can do on the water.

Five Hour Friday: Week 5

by TheSkiMonster
May 11th 2012 - 0 comments

Las Vegas DJ/Producer Atom E just finished this mix for DMS. Good mix to play on your drive home from work getting ready for the weekend.

Kaskade is one of my favorites right now, recently had his Coachella mix up and that got me on this mix. Looking forward to seeing him live on June 22nd.

An oldie but a goodie. Chicago's Inphinity did a great job on this mix, play it at your party girls will dance, it'll be a good time.

Morgan Page can produce, no doubt about that. Too many people haven't heard Morgan in the mix, and it's just as good as the productions.

If you're all set with Vocal House and want something a little more techy, Michael Woods might be you're new favorite DJ.

Naswa Beach Resort - Lake Winnipesaukee, NH

by TheSkiMonster
May 10th 2012 - 0 comments

Lake Winnipesaukee is a gorgeous lake located in central New Hampshire. It’s expansive 71sq mile size makes it the largest lake in the state.  The lake offers fantastic views of the White Mountains and some of New Hampshire’s most sought-after real estate. New Englanders flock to Lake Winnipesaukee in droves in the summertime.  This consistently high volume of visitors is typically the culprit for busy weekend boat traffic and choppy open water.  When you need to escape from the busy waters of the Broads or just want to grab some food and drink, head to The Naswa Beach Bar and Restaurant located just through the channel in Paugus Bay.

The Naswa is sandy oasis where the food is fried and the drinks are bountiful.  Whether you are sitting in the shade or sans umbrella, your feet will be immersed in the Naswa’s sandy beachfront.  On the weekends, it is always jam packed with fellow boaters eager to soak up the live music and party atmosphere.  The Naswa offers all the essential summertime cuisine: Curly fries, nachos, chicken tenders, burgers… the list goes on.  The bar has no shortage of signature drinks and cool crisp beers.  The boat slips, lengthy cocktail list and sandy beach front are what truly set it apart from any other place on Lake Winnipesaukee.

The Naswa’s American charm is certainly something worth checking out when visiting New Hampshire’s lake region. Your friends and family will be entranced with the cool drinks, loud music and relaxing views of the Lake Winnipesaukee.

Hiking Camelback Mountain

by TheSkiMonster
May 8th 2012 - 0 comments

Camelback Mountain is one of the most distinct mountains in the Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe area.  The Arizona mountain got it's name for resembling the side profile of a Camel (Shocker), if you know what a Camel looks like you'll have no problem spotting this mountain when your in the valley.  This amazing mountain that is about 2700ft tall at the summit is right in the heart of the Phoenix area making it extremely accesible to anyone in the Phoenix area.

I hiked up the mountain today starting at Echo Canyon Park, which has limited free parking, if the lot is full just keep circling around you'll get a spot within 10-30 minutes.  When you get out of your car and start hiking up the mountain you'll notice the enormous red rocks that look absolutely amazing with a deep blue sky in the background.  The first 15 minutes of the hike are really pretty easy the trail is loaded with stairs that blend right into the mountain, a few of them are really pretty big, but a nice little warm up before it gets more intense.

After you've gotten past the stairs the remainder of the hike is just as you would expect, a trail covered in rocks that you may have to use all 4 limbs to climb up certain parts, steeper and fun.  There are two really pretty steep parts of the hike on these two parts there is a handrail that got installed that you don't necessarily have to use on the way up, but it's a big help on the way down if you or people in your group get a little winded.

The hike took about 2 1/2 hours roundtrip I wasn't racing up or down just taking in the panoramic views and trying to snap a few pics with my iPhone.  (Follow us on Instagram @theskimonster) If you're in the area this is something you really should do.  Remember you're in the desert so bring plenty of water, slap on some sun screen, and bring a camera you'll get some awesome pictures.

Maynards - Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota

by TheSkiMonster
May 4th 2012 - 0 comments

After a long day of wakeboarding, waterskiing or sun bathing, there is nothing like enjoying a meal by driving your boat to a lakeside restaurant. Lake Minnetonka is located about 20 minutes west of Minneapolis, MN, and is one of my favorite places to boat. The lake is separated into a variety of different bays, and is littered with beautiful homes, marinas and lake front restaurants. There is always a bay with near perfect wakeboarding conditions, and enough water-front destinations to make owning a larger boat ideal. One of these destinations is Maynards Restaurant and Bar, located directly on Lake Minnetonka in the city of Excelsior.

Maynard's is an ideal dining location that serves up excellent food and drink. The restaurant sits on the shoreline of downtown Excelsior, Minnesota, with parking access by either car or boat. The boat parking is easily accessible from the main lake, and even on the busiest days the dock-hands will make sure you quickly find a parking slip.

Once your boat is tied up, make sure to tip the dock employee then head to the outdoor bar. The outdoor sitting area is a nice place to unwind after a long day on the lake. It offers exceptional views of Excelsior Bay and an outdoor specific “Wharf” menu. The Menu consists of typical America style cuisine, with a variety of summer cocktails and more than enough beers on draft. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, I recommend the Excelsior. It‘s absolutely delicious! The sandwich comes packed with ham, turkey, bacon, sliced tomato and swiss cheese, grilled to perfection on wheat bread. Add a side of waffle fries with seasoned sour cream, and you will be in Après heaven! Wash it all down with any of Maynards Wharf drink specials. Maynards offers a Happy Hour promotion from 3-6 pm that includes $3.00-$5.00 draft beers, as well as other tasty summer cocktails.

Maynards Restaurant’s location attracts Après boaters from all over the lake. After a long day in the summer sun, it’s delicious food and refreshing drinks will satisfy any appetite. If you find yourself swimming in the waters of Lake Minnetonka, check out Maynards for an awesome Après Lake scene.

Like everyone else you bump into and make small talk with, I can't believe it's May.  Weather your in Winter mode still, making the transition, or are already wearing flip flops despite the colder temps in your neck of the woods here's some mixes to get you ready for the weekend.

Dirtyloud, mixes sound just like the Brazilian Duos name.

This mix should've made the blog weeks ago, so sorry for the late pass. Steve1der and Lunatik do a great job with this Indie Dance mix.

Fashen is one of my favorite DJ's, his track selection and reach is sick.  Check out this Nu-Disco mix from DJ Fashen.

Le Castle Vania makes some remixes that hit hard pleasing all the electro heads, but yet your Mom will still dance to it, now that's talent.  1 hour of Le Castle Vania.

Rounding the blog off with something downtempo from Fusemania.  If you were listening listening to music in the 90's you're going to like this mix.
