omg i go to UW too.

you should really get that thumbnail window in the images section resized so it is the right size vertically. maybe shrink that top window and make the left side toolbar links smaller so it all fits into one frame.

thats really sweet that you made the ski though, nice work.

Alright, so the ski is fucking AMAZING, but currently out of commision....

I didn't bother fixing up the tip, cause it was a fuck up experimental model anyways. So I was skiing along with it at central today (with a 1260 thats about 1/2 as big, haha) and I suddently noticed that the sidewall was sticking out a little. Then I went to turn on the left edge of the ski, and it started pulling on the sidewall pretty bad. So I just tore it all off by hand so it didn't get left up there.

That wouldn't have happened if the tip hadn't gotten fucked up, plus the design is WAY different for the next ski!


But ignoring that, the ski is incredible. I stood between some moguls, and started jumping on it to see if it would break or anything. Bounced PERFECTLY. It is VERY stiff though, the next one will be signifigantly softer (still stiff though). It was a little strange with the noodley 1260, cause when I got on edge just a little, the 1260 (also has no edges) kept going straight, but the stumpystick turned like CRAZY. They're quick through the moguls, feel great of jumps (tiny ones, but thats all thats there).

Switch they are awesome. I have a hard time turning switch normally, I have to look side to side depending on which way I'm turning and its all awkward. With the stumpy stick, it was nice and controlled, turned really smoothly.

alright, spring break is here, and Stumpystick #2 is currently in production. I got the core setting up now, later this afternoon I will lay-up the rest of the ski, and tomorrow take it out of the press. I'll post up how it goes (or doesn't go!)

This ski is sorta version 1.5. Version 2 has a whole new shape, although the same width dimensions. This ski i'm building now has the same shape as the first one, cause I had already cut the edges and base, so I don't want to waste any materials.

The biggest difference is the CORE. It is completely different:

- Almost HALF as thick as the first ski
- Poplar/Maple/Poplar lamination (first ski was solid poplar)
- Foam PVC tips (i.e. not full wood core)

I'm also gluing the sidewalls to the core, and profiling them together, instead of doing the sidewalls in the main layup... this caused MAJOR problems on the first ski.

Alright, well fuck me.

Everything was going PERFECT until I tried to profile the core.

In short, the router ripped one sidewall off the core, and I almost had to go to the emergency room cause the router snagged the wood, and pulled my thumb onto the cutting gizmo. OW!

Too bad too, cause the core looked sooo nice. So tomorrow I gotta REMAKE the god damn thing.

Not so good, lets leave it at that.

I built a core profiler, which turned out great.

But I managed to ruin ANOTHER core ($15 in wood, and an entire day of setting up after the lamination) and 2 more sidewalls.

I'm so pissed off I could spit.

I was using 30 minute epoxy, which in reality takes like 3 hours. So it probably wasn't as cured as it could be.

I am going to try a bunch of different things with the core I just ruined, cause most of it is still good and un-cut, so I can experiment till I get it right.

I thought about profiling the wood, then gluing on the sidewalls, then cutting it. But its pretty thick, and that would take forever. And profiling them together will make it PERFECT, which is what I want.

I made a REALLY sweet little cutaway model today to take to K2 tomorrow, and I used CA to glue the sidewalls on. They glue on SOLID, and it cures in about 2 seconds. Like seriously CURES. I can't even rip it off as hard as I try. So I think I will give that a shot, glue it on with CA then profile it.

CA glue is pretty crazy stuff, for our freshman engineering project we made a remote control device for a competition. Just before the comp we were making sure everything was gonna hold up we accidentally glued the whole thing to the table with about one drop. good thing it finally came off

CA is the best, I use it for RC airplanes all the time.

It bonds skin instantly, which just blows.

ok, so after days and days of really bad luck, and lot of REALLY close calls with losing fingers, I had a GREAT day.

After ruining so many cores, I kind of got the whole process down pretty good. So here is all that goes in to making a stumpystick, step-by-step.....

- laminate poplar, maple, and poplar strips together to make core blank
- sand core blank straight and square and smooth
- cut sidecut on core blank
- glue sidewalls on core blank
- profile core/sidewalls in profiling jig (takes 4 passes)
- glue tip spacers on core/sidewall
- temp. glue edges on base

Then the actual layup on the press....
- base/edges
- resin
- VDS damping material over edges
- fiberglass
- resin
- core/sidewalls/tipspacers
- resin
- fiberglass
- resin
- carbon fiber
- piggy logo
- resin
- mylar
- vinyl pressure distribution sheet
- thick fabric (more pressure distribution)
- Top of press
- Tighten all clamps.

Done!


.....well, I'll find out tomorrow anyways.

ok, took the ski out of the press, and I would say 75% success.

Everything looks great, except for some reason the end of one of the edges came out slightly, not sure why that happened. Also, the tips didn't really press right, i think its cause the press was designed and cut for the OLD ski... i tried to have the new ski be the same profile/camber, only thinner, so I could use the same press.... but that didn't work as well as I was hoping.

So I stuck the ski back in the press with some more resin in the tips, with extra padding at the tips so I'm only pressing it there. It *appears* to be fully pressed, but I won't know for an hour or so when I take it out.

Also, the mylar wrinkled a little bit, so the top isn't perfectly smooth, but I'm ok with that, its hardly noticable.

It has a pretty soft nose, and a pretty stiff tail. They might be a little to drastic of a difference, so I will have to alter the profile a bit.

Also, I think now its time to start looking into vacuum bagging, or perhaps firehose press. Cause this press only works so-so. There is just way too much that has to be PERFECT in order to get a well-pressed even-pressure ski.

Will post pics in a few hours when I get it all trimmed.

this was originally a "cheap" way to cop out of spending so much money on a new pair of skis..... but as of now, it would have been cheaper just buying brand new motherships... oh well. its the fun I'm having, so I'm ok with it.

oh where do you get ptex, topsheets, edges etc. the only place i've found is snowboardmaterials.com. do you get your stuff from k2 or know of a store w/cheap stuff?

You'll have to go through snowboardmaterials.com, they have everything you need. I got all my stuff from K2, but I've used most of that stuff up so now I'll have to order it from snowboardmaterials.com.

Unfortunately, theres no other way to get everything. Basically ALL edges on aky skis come from germany, and you can't just order it. Topsheet and base material (probably use P-tex, although you can use UHMW stuff too, its just not repairable) you CAN get from plastic companies online, but its so hard to find a good price, its just easier with snowboardmaterials.com. Plus they're prices are SUPER cheap. I got my VDS damping stuff from them, and it was insanely cheap. I haven't even used topsheets on the first two skis, the resin ontop of the carbon was the topsheet, but now I'm going to order some actual plastic topsheet material to put on the next skis.

One thing though, is you have no choice edges, you get what you get, and thats what you get. But you can't complain, cause they'll be fine.
